Debs.
I don't think he actually managed Kylie Minogue! I had a bad dose of that Kylie Minogue a few years ago; I was off work for a week!
Norm81
I had a bad dose of that Kylie Minogue a few years ago; I was off work for a week! I wouldn't mind being off work for a week with Kylie Minogue

Horsetan
.... title is "The joy of (train)sets" which is an amusing play on "The Joy of sex" is this the way the programme will go ? Really? I thought it was a reference to the OU maths programmes………. "Look Around You"....

RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted January 23, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 23, 2013 Not bad at all. Yes and wasn't it great to see Gordon and Maggie Gravett in the limelight too.
Beacon
Very entertaining, interesting and generally positive - worth a watch.
RMweb Premium Legend Posted January 23, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 23, 2013 Yes. I thought it was excellent. For once railway modelling was not depicted as something slightly "strange" but came across as a tranquil and interesting pastime in a crazy outside world
APOLLO
An excellent programme and a showcase for our hobby in my opinion. Brit15
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted January 23, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 23, 2013 A real surprise. Yes it was good to see Gordon and Maggie and Ricey as well. Some good 'talking heads' talking sense for a change.
Richard_S
Another good effort from BBC4, after the 2 shows on railway preservation, our hobby has been given a fair hearing which makes a refreshing change.
chrisf
How old was that clip of Mike Sharman?! Very good to see Iain Rice taking part too. Chris
dibber25
Excellent and certainly warrants further exposure. BBC2 next time, perhaps. The clips of Mike Sharman and Bob Symes make one wonder just how much other archive the BBC has hidden away. I seem to recall Bob coming to Egham Club once with a cameraman many years ago. Richard_S
How old was that clip of Mike Sharman?! Very good to see Iain Rice taking part too. Chris That clip was narrated by Eric Thompson (of Magic Roundabout fame) and he died in 1982. So the clip must be at least 30 years old.
RMweb Premium Legend Posted January 23, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 23, 2013 The Bob Symes clip was from 1975, I would thinl Mike Sharman was from around the same time. I remember his locos and railways appearing in the "History of model and miniature railways" part work which was an inspiration for me at the time
BlackRat
Quite interesting to re the changing social history of our hobby and the change in demographics. No complaints from me.
Horsetan
How old was that clip of Mike Sharman?! .... I'd estimate late '70s/early '80s, based on the size of his glasses! Where is Bob Symes nowadays?
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted January 23, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 23, 2013 Surprised not to see you, Chris, on there. Interesting history lesson, didn't know much about Bassett Lowke.
298
Well done to all involved with the program (although i did expect to see a few of the Blue Peter layouts). One thing that surprised me was the omission of the point explaining how good (in both quality and value) contemporary models are...? Or perhaps this would have taken kudos away from the scratchbuilders featured on there, and the message to go ahead and create something.
5 C
I think the next time someone asks me "why?", I may just point them in the direction of that programme. In the course of an hour, it pretty much summed every reason why I model railways. Andy
scots region
It was interesting to see how the hobby has come full circle, from the specialized preserve of the enthusiast, to the the must have kids toy, now it is very much back in the hand of the enthusiastic. Rather like going around an oval, it has reassured me about the future.

We (Blackmill) were approached with less than a week to go within the original production schedule (in mid 2012). Upon talking to the producer of the show - after he had been pointed in the direction of a few youtube clips of Blackmill, it was ideal to represent the contemporary urban scene, but due to the tight production timescale nothing could be arranged - unfortunately.
