RMweb Premium Tim Dubya Posted June 18, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 18, 2016 I think you are all voting next week on whether to graciously let English possessions across the channel go their own way. Me and the wife have decided to stand aside cos she is a frenchie sympathiser from Scotland. Oakhill Please vote, even if you just scribble a joke on your papers. Fat Controller
Could someone please explain the significance of the coloured axle boxes seen these days on just about any loco and rolling stock. I remember them covered in dirt and grease! Brian. I believe it indicates the type of grease the bearings are packed with, and relates to the colours of the drums the lubricant arrives in. They became common from the late 1950s onwards, as more and more stock received roller-bearing axleboxes. The first ones I recollect were yellow, or yellow with a red stripe, but I've subsequently seen maroon, blue, and green, and there are probably some out there in sky-blue pink. I have seen photos of (non-roller-bearing) GWR coaching stock with painted axle-boxes; does anyone know anything about the significance of these?
