allan downes
Hi Allan, I hesitate to offer advice to a master model builder like yourself, but do you think those handrails look a little 2D? I wonder if beefing up the newel posts would be sufficient? Hi Teaky. Offer as much advice as you like, and of course you're right, those newel posts certainly should be more solid than what they are and I would have done so had the building been commissioned although one could argue whether commissioned or not, why not get it right anway to which there is no valid answer other than these days I'm too old and too idle to pay attention to detail where it counts, kinda token modelling you might say ! Anyway mate, any advice you can offer, offer away, I certainly wouldn't have ever made a living at it without it. Cheers Allan Now where's that 100 thou square strip.... allan downes
Probably the naffest bloke to ever walk the planet selling Jesus to anyone with a blue rinse and a penchant for cats homes and beige trousers after he had a hit record about walking in the air as an even naffer kid, was presenting today's Escape To The Country where a smug pair of naffs said because they had a milloin plus budget, they wanted plenty of family bathrooms with plenty of cosy lounges a kitchen the size of Dallas ( with jam making facilities ) with roaring log fires along and with a field out back the size of Wales on which to build holiday lets. He showed them our house. Cheers. Allan.

allan downes
That was on for a while in our house unfortunately. Was yours the house with a family bathroom for three horses? Well there was one horse, Mrs Naff, who came as close as made no difference. He looked like the difference.
allan downes
A NEW CON FROM AMAZON. Back in may I ordered an adaptor plug - US to UK which arrived in a couple of days. Today, I ordered something else and nothing whatsoever to do with adaptor plugs - then I got an email confirming dispatch of order AND the adaptor plug ! So, I then went to the Amazon return goods page ready for when the adaptor plug that I don't want arrives where they told me to parcel the goods up securely, take it to the post offece with a PRINTED LABEL on it -NOT hand written - and assuming of course that everyone has got a printer. However, they also suggested that in the unlikely event that I haven't got a printer, send an email to a friend that has ! Now as far as I can see, sometime this week I'm going to be the proud owner of another US to UK adaptor plug and because I haven't got a printer to print out labels ( and I bet they are hoping that I haven't! ) they can quite happily send me a ten quid plug a day because I can't return them so now, I've got to bloody unsubscribe from Amazon ! What ever happened to the little old corner shop? Cheers. Allan, your local electrical plug adaptor wholesaler.

Thankfully those who made up the rules foresaw the problem and there is no such requirement. Just get proof of postage, if it gets lost then Royal Mail will compensate you. If they get it I doubt if their staff have time to worry about whether its printed or hand written. Its Amazons problem in getting it back and must pay the return postage
allan downes
ASHBURTON MALTINGS FINISHED - and looking nothing like them whatsoever ! When I say 'finished' I refer to Downes finished, a state of affairs where bits that should be there aren't, and bits that shouldn't be there are. But I might site this on a small base at sometime, I say sometime coz right now I'm up to 'ere with Ashburton Maltings that don't look like Ashburton Maltings but there will be drainpipes at least - when the Evergreen plastic rod arrives. RMweb Premium Ian Smeeton Posted August 6, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 6, 2014 I once had a problem with burgers, Hamburgers actually, Jewish Twins in Birmingham, one of whom was vegetarian, and the other wasn't. allan downes
SEASIDE HOTEL More shots of the bays after painting. mullie
'Evening Mullie. I don't only make stupid comments. As the threads below will show m'Lord I have been known to do some modelling!!!
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted August 6, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 6, 2014 To me, this is the sort of modelling of yours which inspires me the most . Yes, the maltings is a superb building, but these intricate bay windows, in the same way as your Tudor street, really impress.
DonB
Sorry if I'm treading on sore toes, but I seem to remember Stubby building a model of the Starcross pumping building a couple of years ago. This project seemed to come to a halt when roof-line corbels were required. Now here we are with a beautiful set of corbels on your bay windows, without a guide to their construction. (apologies if this feature has been described somewhere in the preceding 170 pages!) For MY benefit (if not for Stubby!) a short description, or a link to the appropriate page, of the corbel manufacture and fitting would be appreciated
allan downes
Hi DonB. I really have to say that making corbels, well my idea of corbels anyway, couldn't possibly be any easier. All I do is to chop up sized styrene strip, here I used 100thou x 100thou, then after they have been fixed to the building/componont, I run the edges off with sandpaper. For much fancier corbels and other details I go to further extremes such as illustrated here. Cheers. Allan.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted August 7, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 7, 2014 DonB, Ah, yes, Starcross Pumping House.... Yes, the corbels were an issue, but mostly the building was too big to fit on the SWAG module, so was put to one side. Allan, I remember seeing that article for the first time and thinking - Wow, I could actually do that. Apart from not having the ability to cut straight, consistent lines.... I can see in your latest bay windows the same techniques are used, for example in the building up of the window cills (or sills) - the simple application of multiple strips can give quite ornate details.
allan downes
SEASIDE HOTEL. The restaurant This was a kind of afterthought wrapped around two walls of the building - something like a glorified conservatory - and keeping to the black and white theme here, I found the easiest way to cut out the inner black window surround was by glueing the outer white frame over a similar sized sheet of black then cutting back to within half a mil of the outer surround. Cheers. Allan.
