Class 37 Photos...

Recommended Posts

Some Class 97 action from the Cambrian Coast over the years; about as exciting as the line gets in these ERTMS days.

Not a great shot, I'll admit; that said, 2020 wasn't great for railway photography for obvious reasons, and suffering a bout of insomnia I was just anxious to photograph anything.  Minfford Station, with a weedkiller run going through in frankly appalling weather.  This was about a week before they tightened the restrictions, and we had to head back to West Yorkshire, so I think this was the only mainline pic I took for another 3 months!

2021, and a Cambrian Coast Express between Barmouth and Harlech.  First excursion for many years, and I think the last of the year because a dozy lorry driver managed to set off at Mach with his tipper-trailer still extended, and clobbered the railway bridge meaning the September re-run of this excursion was canned.

The return, just outside Criccieth as the weather deteriorated.  Myself and Elder Child were clinging to the cliff-face for a more elevated shot than the rest of the snappers who were out for this.

And this one, some years before (2014); this was when the Cambrian had been closed for months for engineering works; nothing was moving (they'd refused to out-station units on the line, just relying on buses).  I remember most of the level crossings had warnings on them reminding people not to trespass, as trains might still run even though there'd been nothing for months and the line was badly rusted and overgrown in places.  I was somewhat surprised to spot this machine parked up in Porthmadog, and managed a few quick snaps before it headed away.

A few of my 37 photos which I hope are of interest to someone out there...

37608 hastily snapped from a passing railtour at Sellafield on 15th October 2011.  Note the multiple working jumper connected to a Class 20 on the right.

The KWVR is no stranger to DRS 37s which have frequently starred in Diesel Galas, but on this occasion 37069 is on a test run along with 20311 and 47802.  The Worth Valley's steep gradients were being used to test new electronic Wheel Slide Protection on the 37 and the 20.  25th April 2004.

On 8th June 2009 37218 and 37607 are stabled in the yard at Doncaster with a very short infrastructure monitoring train.

Late night at Sheffield, where refurbishment of the station canopy was underway when a filthy 37516 was photographed on 29th November 2004.  Shame I didn't get a photo in daylight, as the faded Loadhaul livery would have made a challenging weathering project!

Cheers,

Will

I disagree, that is a great, moody pic of 37516!

37116 growls through Uttoxeter station on the 0850 Derby RTC to Derby RTC via Preston on Friday 31 March 2023.

Used to see this loco in Stonebridge sidings occasionally 40 years ago when I commuted into London - bought back happy memories!

37425 makes a spirited departure from Leeds with inspection saloon "Caroline"  in May 2018; a phone snap, I wasn't expecting it!  What's more, they were dropping someone off, I remember the loco barely even stopped, and as soon as the door slammed the driver opened it up quite impressively!
