Porkscratching
Increasingly thinner gauge steel used simply to 'economise' production quite likely played a part in all this too...

Storing it outside probably didn't do much for it, either.

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted April 18, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 18, 2019 The crumple zone of a 105E Anglia was between the A and B posts, where the driver and front seat passenger sat.
RMweb Premium TheQ Posted April 18, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 18, 2019 There is a sticker for real Landrovers I'd like to get for the back of my 110, for those who think the my landrover is too slow at the speed limit. The sticker says.. Remember YOUR CAR is my Crumple zone.. 1
RMweb Gold chriswright03 Posted April 18, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 18, 2019 Today's offering from me is a big bumper MG Midget with a rather fetching soft top! It was sat for days open but the weather forecast last week obviously persuaded the owner to cover it up. Wise move I would suggest because when it rains here it rains.

I remember my aunt hiring another Rootes Group product from what was, at the time (1986), the only car hirer in Llanelli- she clipped the front gate, and the whole front end fell apart. I doubt there would be any Rootes Group products new enough for car hire in 1986; even the Talbot name (created after the Peugeot take-over of Chrysler Europe in 1978) was on its way out. ...unless they were hiring out 'classic' cars or importing them from Iran (Peykan/Arrow/Hunter) or Argentina (VW 1500/Avenger). It was that old- either a Rapier or a Minx. It seemed to be more bodyfiller than steel. 1

Not everything was the old series engine. The V8s, TDI200/300 and TD5s are all pretty good. It is just that you are happy at the speed you are doing.
rockershovel
I never, ever get close to ANY Series Land Rover doing more than about 50mph.... let alone actually travel in one. The “crumple zone” on one of those is anything above the sills. I’ve once been indirectly involved in the consequences a “roll-over” involving one - and there was absolutely nothing that was even remotely amusing about the outcome. Two fatalities and one “life-changing injuries” (THERE’s a euphemism you never want to see in your in-tray...). The fourth occupant simply jumped for it, out the back door thinking that whatever followed would be preferable to being inside, and he was right. Put me off Land Rovers for life, believe me... I can’t identify any of the later (C4 onward) Corvettes at first sight, or second sight either. I had my Stingray when I wanted it and it will always be there, locked in that magic moment... when the all world was bright and new, astronauts drank three whiskey sours, drove to the launch pad in white Stingrays and flew to the moon.... rockershovel
On a serious note, I do wish manufacturers wouldn’t reuse old names. THIS is a Pontiac Firebird.. and THIS is a Triumph Thunderbird 6

Porkscratching
Ambassador !!...That's identical to a car i had in '95 ( reg no STF 170Y ) same colour and everything, they were uncommon enough even back then..
RMweb Premium Northmoor Posted April 19, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 19, 2019 I remember our family having a road test in one from Silcox in Pembroke Dock. Compared to our Maxi (the third of three!) it seemed huge in the back. Austin Rover as they were at the time, had a specialist set of skills in their styling department; they consistently took fairly unattractive designs and made them even uglier. Having practised on the Maxi 2 and the Morris Ital, the Ambassador was perhaps one of their finest achievements......

The twin headlight Princess was a much nicer looking car than the Ambassador, all they did with the Ambassador was get rid of any styling the Princess had and square it all off! Strangely I'd agree with the Ital, though, I think the issue with the Ambassador was that the front grill/lights were too small for the rest of the car. The Maxi 2 was better looking but that car was more about interior space than exterior styling.

Porkscratching
Being tasteless, I actually preferred the Ambassador to the Princess looks wise! Mine was a real bargain..it was given to me free, still with some tax and mot left, (when the p.o. bought a Pug 406 ) Unfortunately it wasn't as tidy looking as the one picured on IoW...i confess to bashing a road pin down thru the exhaust and wiring it to the bumper, as the whole exhaust system was falling to bits!..happy days..
