Butler Henderson
I think you could add No Nonsense Kits to that list (as a 1 piece plastic part) but I don't know if its available through the new owners. It is, at £3.50 each plus £7.50 postage! http://www.phoenix-paints.co.uk/no-nonsense-kits/products/plastic-mouldings.html The Southern Pride ones are £1.85 each plus at least £2.80 postage http://www.southernpridemodels.co.uk/html/brparts1.htm http://www.southernpridemodels.co.uk/html/postage.htm The Replica complete Mk1 chassis is £2.15 plus unspecified postage http://www.replicarailways.co.uk/spares-and-accessories/spares The DC kits are claimed to be £1.50 yet the website gives £16 for 4 plus £2.52 postage http://www.dckits-devideos.co.uk/shop/kits_modelling/dc_kits_plastic_etched_detailing_spares/mk_1_underframe_trussing_4_pairs_.php

I'm saving those for a 4TC. I wonder if there is any potential to have an RMweb 'project' where we all hack one of these to give something else? It strikes me there are a number of possible projects, and these are cheap enough to not worry too much if it goes wrong. It does annoy me when people post 'I don't have the skill to build a......' but won't make a start on anything to acquire that skill through practice. Ian Fisher
Happy to report that all unwanted plastic from the six chassis has been completed out in the garden this afternoon. They are currently drying having had a soak to remove plastic bits and dust. I have six trussing units ready to join the two I got done yesterday. Next up will be adding DC kits well detailed plastic battery boxes. I have had some fine Southern Pride mark one etches in stock which have my choice of V hangers I intend to use. Skinnylinny
At the risk of being *incredibly* cheeky... are you getting rid of the sides from these? I managed to snap the glazing on one of mine right through the middle of one of the windows... Ian Fisher
I took these pictures I thought a year or so ago at GCR Loughborough, July 2007 must be getting old.I had thought I had taken more funny the games your mind plays on you, maybe a drive over to the GCR is in order. I would like to use this post also to collate any useful sites containing prototype information or images I have come across during this build..first up.. http://irps-wl.org.uk/the-vision/vehicles-of-the-night-mail-museum/mk-1 http://www.flickr.com/photos/95476718@N06 http://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/ http://80srail.zenfolio.com/ http://postalheritage.org.uk/page/tpo-look http://www.allanyeo.co.uk/

Wild Boar Fell
Hello Ian, A very interesting thread to follow, your giving me too many ideas now. I have some (not many) more recent photos of the GCR TPO's if you want any, I may not have close up shots of all the detail, but If you let me know what you are after I will see what I have and upload them onto my Flickr if that is of use? I have a similar angled shot of 80301 to you, but it is on the turntable at quorn late last year. Interestingly 80301 is one of the sorting vehicles that Bachmann has produced, the first origional liveried one that wasn't for Modelzone. Ian Fisher
Hi Wild Boar Fell, Be happy to see any shots! I have stowage and sorting vans a brake pot to finally get some paint on them! These inspired my 325's maybe these will spurr me on to revisit all the work on them! Ian
Ian Fisher
Bogies, TPO's in later years had B5 bogies, from memory they weren't available back then so a little trickery I felt was called for. I shaved the lower beam to look like a B5. I did the bogies as a batch. First off was to chop the Replica kits spigots off and neaten it up. Also for the chop was the coupler. Charlie at DC kits had thought of this though with the inclusion of etched discs which neatly and accurately filled the gap. Next up was a lot of drilling (I assembled sixteen) which would be a lot easier with my now acquired truck tuner. A shoulderless bearing was fitted with a tiny amount of superglue. The bogie was then given it's wheels in this instance 18.2mm gauge 12mm disc' purchased from the EM Gauge Society stores. They were then test run to make sure everything turned over freely. I can not recall any nasties.
Wild Boar Fell
Hello Ian, Here is a link to my photos of the TPO's, a slow internet connection has meant it has taken a fair while to load them all. http://www.flickr.com/photos/wild_boar_fell_railways/sets/72157635330819767/with/9646595013/ Bogie photo for comparison (the eagled eyed viewer may note the location of the end axle and be able to give a location and date to the photo) Hope they are of some use, Regards, Wild Boar Fell EDIT: Just found some more, will add them tomorrow

Ian Fisher
As in the above posts TPO's later on had B5 bogies. The other night as you start to relax before bed and your creative juices ooze, I was thinking I may like to try to retain the close coupling. Well that was the other night! It would require a fare amount of cutting plastic away from my built bogies, so I think kadees will be the order of the day, which was my intention eventually with all "fixed rake stock". I have also got Kemilway sprung gangways to use within the rake. Now how to attach the bogies to the chassis. I have placed a 6BA washer from inside the round hole, creating a lightly applied force fit. I intend to drop a little superglue around the joint then a 8BA nut centrally placed reinforced with some epoxy. This will when set have a tap run through it to clean the job (if it is needed) and a hexagonal head bolt threaded up. Any packing to get accurate ride height will be shim strip. Ian Fisher
Well I did it! Six of eight trussing back in place. I have to get an order in for some more. Two had been used on other attempts and while they are ok, I would prefer a rake to be consistent. There are other jobs to crack on with, which wont stop the project! Ian Fisher
Hi Pete, I guess they could, more that I have the time to get on with these projects at the minute and then the opportunity the Hachette coaches gave me. I was only looking last week at my TPO project box. The 90 wont suffer though. Are these to go behind the 90 Ian?
Ian Fisher
Have been working on the rooves tonight. The plastic is nice to work with, detail can be taken away with a fine file! Then a little scrape. I then follow up with a rub with fibre glass. I will need to review these in daylight but would think im 90% there in removing rainstrips and toilet ducting filler pipes. New whitemetal castings will be added once I have worked out where they are located on each vehicle.
Ian Fisher
Bit more getting rid of things from the rooves today. Something nice though, sent the lad to stores today (no lad to send its just me really) but some of the goodies that will be incorporated into the build. Colin parks
Hi Ian, A mammoth task you have set yourself by the look of it! I was just reading back through the posts. You mention reinforcing the sides. Could you not add some cross-bracing from side to side, positioned approx. 12mm up from the floor, to span the joints in the sides? It looks a though you intend the roofs to be removable, so such bracing would not interfere with glazing the vehicles. All the best, Colin
Ian Fisher
Hi Colin, My intention is to secure the sides and and ends to the roof. The kits were started many years ago. I couldn't decide then what was the best approach was to be, roof down or chassis up. Everything was accurate in the kits but both options would seem to pose as many problems. The rooves tend to be a bit bendy, so the roof in the 3.99 coach was a boon, it is a good profile. It is slightly long as others have mentioned but is very well moulded. With a little tlc they will soon be detailed up and introduced to its DC Kit body. The sides come in many parts the sorting vans total seven parts per side. Having added a strip of evergreen along the lower edge which is moulded in the kit it really has made a difference the straightening the sides, for a belt and braces approach I will add in some bracing as you suggest across the coach. It is funny how a suprise product like the donor coach can move a project on.
Colin parks
Hi Ian, That sounds like a good idea, but I hope what I suggested will not impede you when fitting the glazing - such as it is. All the best, Colin
Ian Fisher
Hi Colin, I think some strip as you suggest will work a treat. Have I taken a picture with three coaches, left to right L angle fitted, middle just posed on roof but look at the distortion!, the third has just had strip added with the inner bracing still to be glued in. I intend to replicate a further strip from the YMRV coach that sets it into the chassis which, fingers crosed will rid us of any distortion or wobble. the penguin of doom
By heck Ian, you've certainly cracked on with those coaches and mighty fine work too. On page one, you suggest there may be some spare parts available, my Trans - Pennine, (if I eventually get it completed), could do with a few SK interiors if there's any left? If so, I'll PM you for some details. Cheers. Sean.
