Can I set a photo challenge…

Three 47/4s had evidence of a high intensity headlight below the right hand red tail light, 47432, 47434 and 47523, before the standard headlight was fitted. I have seen plenty of photos of 47432 and 47523 with the headlight but not 47434. There are plenty of photos of 47434 with the holes plated over from 1975 and in 1979 when it entered Crewe works for collision damage repairs to No.1 end. I am convinced that 47434 never had the headlights fitted, despite the holes being cut, but does anyone have photographic proof that it did? Thanks.

remember working on those as an apprentice at York. cannot recall 434 having the headlamp fitted at either end but the switch was in the respective cabs. 432 and 523 both had the headlamps fitted and did work, but the fitting that was used were not to brilliant and would cause problems . It is possible that 434 did have the headlight fitted at Crewe but was removed and a the blanks fitted there due to the faulty fittings.

These are really good photos considering some are knocking on half a century old. I thought the Harbury cutting one from 1975 was much more recent until I clocked the headcode and odd position off the arrow.

Patched-up paintwork already (colour-matching this one-off must have been fun......or did they just use BR blue?) and looks like all-maroon stock so......1966/7? I found D1733 bogieless and perched on trestles in Crewe Works on 3/11/69 so only just caught it in this livery.

Ooops....!!

Could easily be a bit earlier, 1965 maybe. I've seen other photos of D1733 looking unkempt around the same time. After the viny logos were removed (about a fortnight after being applied in '64) it was never really kept that clean.

On April Sunday 18 April 1965 I visited some north eastern sheds. Here is another photo I took that day of nearly new Brush Type 4 D1795 later class 47 47314 which was withdrawn from Tinsley on 28 February 2007 and cut up by EMR Kingsbury in April 2008.

Note that it is dual-braked but still has the fixed radiator roof grilles at the other end - those built new this way (D1631-65 from Crewe and D1782-1806 from Brush) all seem to have been modified to Serck shutters within that year, presumably before the 1965-6 winter could cause frozen radiators. As a result such photos are uncommon.

Carlisle Station 3 Septembr 2005. While waiting for class 52 D1015 "Western Champion" on the Pathfinder Tours 'The Western Heights' rail tour these two class 47s appeared light engine. The far loco is 47709 in Fragonset black livery with red stripe. Can anyone identify this loco which has black livery and Fragonset branding without the red stripe. I have googled Fragonset class 47 images but cannot find any results with Fragonset branding!
