Washout at Dawlish

Recommended Posts

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

To walk the sea wall once more and watch the trains go by

(With apologies to the late John Masefield)

And another big thank you to Granitechops for all the piccies and updates!

Well, I went to the opening ceremony at lunch time today, in an official capacity, and took a few photos, including one or two of Don, who was also there, of course, and had the distinction of being the first buggy driver to pass over the new section of Sea Wall.

The new section of wall was opened by Network Rail Western Route Director Patrick Hallgate, with the Mayor of Dawlish cutting the ribbon. Press & media were also there, as was a mobile ice cream kiosk at the Rockstone end, kindly provided for the guests by Network Rail:

Something vaguely the familiar about the bloke bottom right in the second pic - wearing a flat cap - who appears again in 7381 and 7386.  Is it our old 'friend' from that part of the world?

Yes, it is, the flat cap and step ladder are quite distinctive.

Just caught UofSA at Starcross earlier, running 23 min early according to realtime trains; mainly due to a shorter stop at Tiverton loops. Looked very relaxed, not having to work hard along this section. Due back through Dawlish 20:00.

130 late into Plymouth - noted elsewhere on RMweb that No.9 had a hotbox and was reportedly removed at Newton Abbot.

I know the Dawlish washout has been discussed in many non-railway circles

but imagine my surprise when it got mentioned in the talk at church this morning!

Even a piccy on the screen.

Of course the guy got a few facts wrong, but I didn't like to challenge him after.

I think a great big thank you is in order to all those involved in the restitution of the sea wall, mostly the Orange Army for their hard work, sometimes in atrocious conditions, but all to all those others involved behind the scenes that worked hard to make it all work. Also those that have made a contribution to this thread to make this an interesting narrative to a piece of what is now the history of the restoration of this piece of the sea wall at Dawlish. I have to single out "Granitechops" for his dedication in taking a lot of the day today photos and updates.

Thanks.

Bit off topic ( only slightly) .......my first trip down to Torquay today and it was a joy to see the "new" walk being used by so many happy people :) and many waving as the train went past.

On my return to Exeter St.Davids, through Newton Abbot I spotted this in the sidings , A4 Union of South Africa simmering away which caught me by surprise as we pulled away, hence some off the worst photographs I've probably ever taken ! Quick iPhone burst !!!

I know this is a bit off topic but following Don's earlier post about UofSA leaving on Friday can anyone confirm this is happening and if so are any timings known; can't see anything on RTT.

'Buoyancy aid.'?  How non-PC. for this age.

      :locomotive:

Well at least they don't say it in French which is "Brassiere de sauvatage" which might provoke even more comment.

Tis not a buoyancy aid, those are worn by racing sailors in Dinghies or yachts inland.

A lifejacket is worn by sailors at Sea

The difference being most buoyancy aid will not  turn the incumbent up the right way, whereas  a lifejacket will. ( A life jacket also normally has more buoyancy)

On the pole should be a life bouy or life ring which a person in the sea can grab if it is thrown within reaching distance.

Answering my own post,

now know why nothing shown on RTT.

Went to SDR this afternoon,

60009 still in the workshop minus middle wheelset.

When I asked one of the staff when she's leaving,

the reply I got was,

"Don't know when she's going home, don't know how she's going home".

(Mods, sorry if this is going off topic,

feel free to split off into separate topic if required).

Has anyone reminded Grainte Chops that the Vulcan will be visiting Dawlish this weekend (weather permitting) and I don't mean Mr Spock?

Phil

Who could miss that the air show is sheduled to be on!

The seawall will be nigh on impassible if its dry

Any one in Dawlish today should be prepared to be patient

Last year late afternoonish it took us 2 hours to get 1 mile home
