Washout at Dawlish

Recommended Posts

They are almost certainly later than 1895 due to the way the track has been slued - hence the date I quoted above.

Hi Mike,

You may be right on the date unless the track was slewed at the conversion. I will have to differ with you over the date as later than 1895 seems an awfully long time for those long sleepers not to have been replaced or cut short as they did with alternate transoms in the run up to the gauge conversion.

Best wishes,

Les.

OK, back from holidaying in  N Devon. exercised the beach scooter & tandem over Saunton Sands,

tide out,  1/2 mile beach 2? miles long?  flat damp sand, ideal for a speed romp

not much to observe in Dawlish now the jack up barges have gone, but work goes on, they restarted yesterday,

Tues, after holiday weekend break. no shuttering in sight at town end & an orange clad  operative yesterday said, no idea,

not told when shuttering will be done.

but interestingly the last four 'L' units do NOT have a return lip on top edge for some reason,

& are not all identical, with one being taller than the rest

post-22449-0-31403800-1428517154_thumb.jpg

they have removed some old sewage ( I suppose?) pipes

& stacked them at the Warren beach compound

seeing that,  reminded of years ago (48?) loading similar ones

by HAND at a water board depot near Kingsbridge

meanwhile down at Dawlish Warren the new walk way

above possible flood level, in front of new shop development was opened in time for Easter

Another of Don's pictures with thanks and a little info for the repair watchers. The tie in of old to new is progressing at a steady place along with the reinstatement of the parapet walls. The present estimate for completion is the end of June but as always weather and tide permitting. There is some activity planned for tomorrow afternoons low tide but i have just been told to watch the beach! For the eagle eyed with Don's pic you will notice that the final 4 L sections do not have the wave deflectors on. This is where the new steps to the beach will be installed and they have been left off so we don't bang our heads smile emoticon Many thanks to those who have shared the info SD

I aimed to get down to Red rock & along the wall to Rockstone footbridge at low tide this afternoon but

battery malfunction on the scooter caused us to turn back before getting there

( us, me & my lady on the tandem behind the scooter)

i believe some politician made a beach foray?

but did see the relay TV vans with big sattellight dishes parked up at Warren carpark compound

The said politician was on the news last night saying that his party would not be putting up train fares for the next five years. There was some nice footage of the reinforced sea wall from the beach though. The orange Army have certainly been busy over the last few months.

Many thanks to them for the hard graft through this winter.

Interesting that only the baby is looking at the workmen! I'd have stopped to have a look and talk to my kids about what was going on....... but then, I'm an old fa*t and think things like this should not go unnoticed.

Watching the camera for the last few days there doesn't seem to be much going on in terms of finishing off the raising, or is that a false impression?

Work is still going on, concrete sections to put in place on the ramp, concreting-in of the walkway surface and various other jobs.

Looking on Dawlish beach camera, there now appears to be a new slope down to the beach complete with temporary hand rail?

Might be a bit deceptive, what is happening is that the old slope is now being modified into a 'stepped' configuration, in order to have bespoke pre-cast concrete 'L' sections attached to it, to match that already installed.

  • 2 weeks later...

Over a month since my last post, due to various factors, not the least the unreliability of my blue Neo

scooter with the twin wheels.

So obtained replacement scooter this one is much bigger, stronger & will take 25 stones weight,

so with the tandem behind it will cope better with our combined weight,

the blue Neo was rated for about 16 stones if I remember. but that was a cheap second hand one

which gave me an advantageous learning curve for my new Comet scooter

this one is not only stronger but has got internal mudguards on the back axle for splash protection

very neccessary as the seawall often has pools of sea water (SALT) along it

the old one corroded badly

this one has had an added coat of hammerite over the new paint for better protection

new stronger drawbar needed as this one has suspension & pivots 18ins inboard from back fender

so cant bolt to back cross member

post-22449-0-43111000-1431870182_thumb.jpg

Pin hitch attatchment, detatchable, as other wise the larger overall length

would prevent entry to the local supermarket lift to the upstairs restraunt

seat & cowling removed, chassis now with coat of blue hammerite

I hope the footings (temp) for those struts  are well down in the sand,

Work is continuing to be done on the raised footpath, there appears to be several areas where re-bar is being added ready for concrete pouring.

The track is in need of tamping in the Dawlish Warren to Exminster area, I was on my way to the buffet when the

coach lurched and I nearly ended up with my head between a nice young ladies buffers.  Which would have made an old man very dirty.

The parapet work progress is currently visible on the Lobstervision NR webcam.

see

https://www.lobstervision.tv/home

the new parapet is on the inside of the walkway but outside of the wall formed by the first phase of 'L' units placed in march 2014  and seems to be quite a bit higher than that structure

Hi All

Have just discovered this thread. Have any of the powers that be given a date for the completion of repairs and re-opening of the footpath wall?

word on the wall is 10 weeks, but no idea what original source of that info was..

Yes, well I think that's a bit fluid, as discussions are on-going. There are still two sets of steps to construct on the new wall section.

It didn't take long for the bits washed by the tide to weather in did it.

Just left Paddington on time,  I will have a look as I pass by in a few hours time.

Just passed by,  but I am sat on the wrong side of the train to get a good look and I am not brave enough to ask the lady sat on the opposite side as steam has been coming out of her ears since she had to pay full fare,  she had senior rail card tickets booked online by her son and tried to use her bus pass to justify the purchase.  I wish I had a flack jacket.  The train manager is very calm when he passes through.

Well it may be sunday on a bank holiday weekend, but looking at

https://www.lobstervision.tv/home

and rewinding the guys have been visible on the wall from 7.30 am to at least 2. 45 pm today

(cant do a screen capture, haven't got really used to this windows 8.1 yet!!)

which is a shame as I have just discovered there is a ZOOM button on that page

giving very good definition.

In fact it looks like the parapet is at least up to the guys shoulders when standing on the seawall path!
