Thanks, I'd forgotten about the Dapol version with all the bells and whistles. Must look into it! I faintly recall that it had a lot of what I don't want, sound, smoke etc.... or something along those lines. edit; 400 quid, doubtful curves and details if you are fussy, heavy die cast body, not necessarily reliable , maybe a second hand one? Them, and the cab wind deflectors are the first things I look at when considering a Hornby Super Detail A4, then I look at the rest of the locomotive .... One of the key errors is on view! See how the rear aperture of the Kylchap ejector is smaller than the front aperture (very apparent on the blue liveried model)? WRONG! Fortunately easily corrected with a little work. The other major blemish in body shape is the failure to 'roll under' the streamlined casing from front to cylinders, following the curvature of the cylinder underside. Compare to a real A4 seen near head on and the 'slab sided' profile of the model's valancing is clearly incorrect. Very difficult to correct, the moulding needs to be reworked. It could be better represented, so there's opportunity for a newer and betterer A4 to put this defect to bed... railroadbill Posted July 6, 2019 Share Posted July 6, 2019 Some years ago a friend who painted transport subjects painted me a picture of an A4 at speed. (Like some of Rob's pics). He told me the loco was the most difficult shape he'd had to draw. So many curves on it it looks different depending on the angle it's being viewed from. Current Hornby A4 best so far then, no doubt improved scanning or manufacturing techniques will give us the ultimate RTR A4 someday. I think it was my first locomotive - for sheer speed probably one of the fastest - apart from my brother's Turbo Car!! I learnt how to use a small screwdriver to replace the tiny screws holding the con-rods on which normally became a blur!! I also learnt how to service the X-04 motor - removing, removing the brushes, cleaning the commutator, etc. ... Great little locomotive!! Al. robmcg Posted July 8, 2019 Author Share Posted July 8, 2019 My latest craze is Hornby Duchesses, I realised I didn't own all the recent offerings.... horrors! ...one or two pristine BR red versions missing from my collection, 46238 (2005) was on the box of one, but I had forgotten, it contained a weathered 46245.... and when I went to look for a nice s/h one on Ebay there were none, and Hattons have one but want over UKP150 for it ! What is happening to the world? Another I wouldn't mind is 46243 (2010)... not sure if these are around either? There must be a lot of mad avid collectors out there! I shall have to buy several in order to settle this crucially important dilemma.... please note 46236 Bradford as above has had later version wheels edited-on, do not be fooled. here is another edited pic., but with the older-style wheels, and personally I think it matters but not a great deal. or in red... I observe that there are variations in the darkness of reds used by Hornby, and greens, and can only quote a certain actor... "You may well think that.
