Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s of Edinburgh Waverley and Princes Street Gardens. The last photo’ at Princes Street Gardens, with a Driving Trailer Second, leading a train, on the 18th August, 1987, being a beautifully composed shot of a typical train for Edinburgh and area.

The photo’s from around Blackwell, north of Leominster and Haywood Lodge are full of interest. The last photo’ at Leominster (north of), with Castle Class, 4079, Pendennis Castle, on an Empty Coaching Stock movement, on the 7th April, 1974, being a delightful shot of the preserved locomotive on the one carriage special.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

i was trying to pinpoint these pics and it’s just on the approach to wooferton, looking at the gradient (and using my route knowledge) you can see the summit of a climb which is where I normally see wooferton up distant coming into view over the hump as I climb it, there is also only 2 over bridges between Leominster and wooferton so that narrows it down too

What I found interesting is looking at the Ariel view there is a D shaped line of trees that look to be an isolated river creek, i was also intrigued by the road being called ‘tunnel lane’, a Quick Look on railmaponline sister map of canals revels it’s the former Leominster canal and there is indeed a tunnel there, all the years driving down there and I never knew there was a canal in the area

Thank you very much for the information, it is very interesting as I have an interest in canals as well as railways and hadn't known about it.

J025 in January 1963 - that's when we had the most severe winter, aka the Big Freeze. I would have thought there would have been a lot more snow in the picture. Memories for me too as I went up to Manchester University in that same month for my interview from London via the Midland line, as the WCML was being electrified. However, the new-fangled diesel broke down 2 miles after leaving St Pancras so I was late for the interview! Can't believe it was 60 years ago.  Still got the place though.

Good evening, David. That’s a great set of photo’s of Little Bytham and Abbots Ripton on the ECML. The last photo’ at Abbots Ripton, with a Class 55, on a down express passenger train, in July, 1977, is an excellent photo’ of a Deltic hauled air con train on the ECML. Unless I’m seeing things, the second carriage appears to be a Mkllf, with the staggered toilets being a clue.

The photo’s of the Midland Main line, at Ratcliffe on Soar, are a truly superb selection. The first one is a real gem, of a class 45 on an up service, in January, 1963. Your Dad has excelled himself with this photo’. It is beautifully composed and crystal clear. I just hope he did not catch cold.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

What is that draped over the wheel barrow in J1777 David? it looks like a dead pheasant, or possibly a dead cat!

I'm not sure, it isn't mentioned in Dad's catalogue and I wasn't with him that day.

Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s of the Rev. Teddy Boston’s garden railway at Cadeby, and the last two of Teddy's layout around 1948. J3677, at Cadeby, with MR boundary marker and GNR somersault signal, in May, 1974, being a superb portrait shot of them, and I am wondering if there is a wedge visible on the signal?

The photo’s of the ECML around Burton le Coggles, near Stoke Summit and Sutton on Trent, are a superb selection. The first photo’ at Burton le Coggles, withclass Class 46, D177, on the 08.48 Halifax to Kings Cross, 09.00 ex Bradford and 09.30 ex Leeds, in July, 1969, being a most impressive photo’, and the third carriage can be seen to be, in maroon, a Mkl prototype car by Cravens,  the distinctive windows and lack of roof vents being two clues.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Looks like a rag or old sack.

That was the conclusion when the photo was first posted in 2016.  I don't think Dad would have taken a photo with a dead animal in it.

Sutton on Trent is actually Grassthorpe crossing  and it is still manned gates , spent about four hours there about four years ago and not one vehicle crossed , i presume busy during agricultural peaks . Your contributions are fantastic keep it up .

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s from North East Switzerland, on the 1st August, 1988, at St Gallen, are fantastic. C9937, of TB BDe4/8, 21, on a St Gallen to Trogen service, is an excellent photo’, and a great example of the train running along the roadway.

The photo’s of the Blyth and Tyne, in Northumberland, are a fascinating set. C5261, at South Newsham, with 37059, on a permanent way train, going up, on the wrong line, on the 11th January, 1981, being an superb portrait of the 37, in the very cold conditions.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Excellent pictures David.  Other than the steel halt one the scenes are virtually unrecognisable now not only because of the demolition of Thornaby shed and cargo fleet station but trees and vegetation have taken over in last 30 years
