The Bluebell Railway in the mid 70s for this morning.  At the time I lived in Essex, it was a nice drive through the Dartford Tunnel and then southwards if there wasn't too much traffic about.

David

I too remember the days of not too much traffic through the tunnel, when everything on the Essex approaches was white due to the cement works. However, on British Grand Prix day it would take us up to four hours to get from Brands Hatch to the tunnel, one serious jam.

Also pre M25.

Great photos as ever Dave, thank you for posting.

Good evening, David. That’s a most delightful set of photo’s of the Bluebell Railway from the mid seventies. In C3634, at Sheffield Park, with SECR, class H, 263, taking water, on the 26th December, 1977, you have captured a lovely scene, and the class H should still be able to take on water from that water column today when needed.
You have posted an excellent selection of photo’s of Buston Barns on the ECML in Northumberland. In C18054, with 153351, on a Newcastle to Alnmouth service, on the 19th September, 1992, you can see, from the distinct lack of heads visible that even a single car unit was too big for the very low number of passengers. Hopefully usage has improved since the time of the photo’.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Good evening, David. That is a most excellent set of photo’s of Newcastle from 1987 to 1990. In C11653, with 43108, on the rear of a HST from Edinburgh to London Kings Cross, on the 17th February, 1989, you have an excellent portrait shot of the 43, and just look at how superb it looks in the Swallow livery.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

I'm sorry there aren't any photos today.  It has nothing to do with RMWeb this afternoon.

To quote Robert Burns:

The best laid plans of mice and men,

Gang aft aglay.

An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,

For promis'd joy!

From "To a mouse"

Hopefully normal service will be resumed tomorrow.

Previous photos should gradually reappear.

Good evening, David. I’m glad things are better for you today, and that you’ve been able to post a selection of excellent photo’s from the Great Central, around Nottingham. In JVol2047, at New Basford, with a clean B1, 61312, on an up class B passenger service from Mansfield to Nottingham, in c1952, it is intriguing to see that the first three carriages are ex Great Eastern corridor carriages. The only thing I can think of is that they were transferred from the GE to the GC. I’ll see if I can find out more information before I go to bed.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Great pictures David

I used to do the Alcan job at this time.

I know they have been discussed before on here but what was the purpose of the 'goal posts'?

I don't think we ever came to a firm conclusion but the suggestion was that they were there because of the power lines crossing the track.

They would certainly stop the crane in the third photo from moving along below them with its jib up.

Good evening, David. That’s a most interesting selection of photo’s of the northern part of the Blyth and Tyne. In J13238, at Woodhorn, with a crane, and a wagon, in July, 1991, the wagon seems to be very old, maybe ex NER, and has a ‘shed’ in the rear of it. That wagon would make a fascinating model.

Good afternoon, David. That is a most excellent selection of photo’s which you have chosen to post this afternoon from elsewhere on RMWeb. The last photo’ of Selby and the swing bridge, with a class 254 HST on a down express passenger service in February, 1983, shows a scene which is no longer possible with the diversion of the ECML away from Selby later in that year.

I am looking forward to seeing more of these largely unseen photo’s.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

While checking the whereabouts of the photos I've posted in this thread since 2014 I came across a folder of images which I may have posted elsewhere on RMWeb a very long time ago but not in this thread.

I thought I'd use a few of them from time to time as most of you will not have seen them.

They are in no particular order.

Good evening, David. That is a most impressive selection of photo’s of Carlisle from 1987, 1990, and 1995. The last photo’ of DB999608 and DB999601, the Track recording train, a class 150, on the 25th October, 1995, is most interesting and shows something that is not too often photographed. Thank you for posting that photo’.

Another quick trip to Switzerland today, stopping at Epesses, a halt on the line heading along Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) between Lausanne and Montreux.

The line runs through vineyards along this section.

Who could fail to like these? Especially with two very handsome Re4/4II in TEE colours.

If I remember rightly there is also a trolleybus route alongside the lake somewhere near there.

And the MOB and a couple of lines up local mountains, plus a preserved line a bit inland.

I am not sure this station is still in use:

Sorry about the poor colour. I scanned the original transparency years ago and the scanner was rather poor.

But Montreux is not the place for a cheap cup of coffee.

Good evening, David. What a most excellent selection of photo’s of the Nene Valley Railway from the 1970’s and early 1980’s. In J7376, at Wansford, with Brittania, 70000, Brittania, in May, 1981, it looks like the preserved 4 COR unit is being used as hauled stock, but the first photo’ seems to be indicating something else going on. I’m feeling a bit confused. 😉

The photo’s of Switzerland, from the 28th July, 1978, at Epesses, one of the halts on the railway going along Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) between Lausanne and Montreux, are most enchanting and show how lovely it is in Switzerland. In J6180, with SBB Re4/4ii, in TEE livery, heading an express from Milan to Geneve, shows how remarkable the scenery is and that the railway is actually quite high up at Epesses.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Lausanne Chauderon is on the Luasanne Echallens Bercher Bahn.  It is still a station but looks a bit different now as it is underground and the original was demolished in 1995. (wikipedia)

The LEB is a line I've never ridden on but I think I have at least one photo of it, taken when travelling by car.

The lines along the lake are well worth visiting and I agree that Montreux is not the place for a cheap coffee - or a cheap anything else.  I've ridden on the MOB several times and along part of the line from Vevey to Blonay and beyond (the CEV).  The preserved line from Blonay to Chamby is lovely.  It's the only railway I've been to where the train stopped by a viaduct and everyone got off and walked across the viaduct to watch and photograph a run by and then got back on to continue the journey - that was back in 1978.

I remember the trolleybuses in both Lausanne and  along by the lake past Chateau Chillon from Montreux.

I'm not sure what was going on at Wansford back in 1981, I think it was some sort of gala weekend.

In Switzerland the line along Lake Geneva is a lovely ride - as are almost all other lines in the country.

Thanks. I had a feeling things had changed. A pity. I rode part way up that line, and the whole length of the MOB. Fortunately apart from my fares someone else was paying for my trip! I have also more recently been up the "Marmot Line" which I think goes from either Montreux or Lausanne, or possibly the next station. But all a long time ago now. Montreux also has a funicular. Your Swiss photos make me wish to go back but I think that is now unlikely, as I don't have the energy to do what I did then. So many thanks for the chance to relive the area in photos.
