Graeme's method for the cartazzi wheels themselves may be better. I was mostly showing the cosmetics of shortening the back of the frame and moving the steps forwards for the A2/1. I am currently trying to modify the Bachmann A2 cartazzi arrangement to work under the cab.  I have removed a bunch of material from under the cab floor on the body and also from the top area of the chassis casting where the screw slides. I wont know if it is enough till I can test on the track. If not I will either break through the cab floor or try Graeme's method for the wheels

I have gone for Graemes version this afternoon as their is very little space under the cab. I have had to break through into cab with the wheel mounting casting. Hopefully I can conceal the hole with the back head when fitted and a  Loco crew. As mine will be the all Black LNER version it should be dark in there !!

I need to think a way of mounting the body at the rear and  a new Loco to Tender connection hopefully it should be easy to do.

They do look great, i hanker after the first incarnation with the really short cab.

Looks simple , but that would be a lot more work to create.

Happy to report the rear wheels work fine with the modified A2 cartazzi arrangement under the V2 cab.  I am a bit surprised too because as you said thre is not much room under there !

Now I need to decide which A2/1 it will be and which apple green livery so I can decide which tender it will have.

Have you a  good source for the livery evolution for the 4 of them ? I am trying to figure out if British Railways is the only option for apple green or if any of them ran after black with LNER on the tender.

Thanks Mick, I found the relevant section now, thank you.

It seems I can have either 60508 or 60509 in LNER green with British Railways on the tender if i interpret correctly (Sept 48 and August 48 respectively) .

But only 60508 if I want to run it with the 6 wheel tender.

509 had the numbers about halfway down the cabside instead of the normal BR position Tender was BR in full.

Modified A2 chassis using method suggested by Graeme King. Brass strip added for  body mounting and tender connector , chassis cut back in Cartazzi area. Cab area modified to allow for the truck mounting to be hidden behind Backhead.

One disaster later the resin body was damaged and unrepairable. Luckily I saved the Smokebox.

Latest attempt

Now using a Hornby A3 Boiler and  GBL A4 Cab the A2/1 is nearly ready for small detail, Body is loose fitted in photos.  Chassis done and can be seen  running in the first photo.

Waverley done a lot of faffing about as well. The main work needed was due to the difference in the Bachmann metal A2 and the much slimmer plastic Hornby A3 footplate . As a result the valve gear and various other parts requiring building up to compensate for the difference. On reflection a kit would have been much easier !!

Will you do Thompson RF or RK?

No, according to the Banks book they were not used until BR days.

Southern Pride only list a FK on their current list as well.

Again from Banks book the set used a Gresley RTS set in 1947. (Which I don't have either !!) I could always cheat and use my Gresley MJT Restaurant set instead !!.

The only one I haven't built of the Southern Pride LNER period versions is the FO which will be done in due course.

More Thompson. This time a commission.

A2/1 circa 1945 prior to naming as Highland Chieftain. Based on Bachmann A2 , G King Resin and etched valve gear and a GBL A4 Tender Body.

More bashing and a repaint.

This a Bachmann B1 renamed as Inyala a York engine. This paired with a some much better quality spare/damaged Hornby B1 Tender.

As Hornby have announced a Green B1 and even then in BR lettering at £155 I thought this was a much cheaper alternative at about £50 . If a damaged Hornby B1 comes up in the future the Loco will be replaced due to the dire chassis on the Bachmann. Many thanks to Paul aka 34theletterbetweenB&D for a replacement motor.

Makeover on another Bachmann V2 body for the latest Bachmann V2 chassis.

New Handrails, Vacumn return pipe, Chimney,Dome, Shifting valve, Hornby A3 Door, Lamp irons and Sand fillers. More detail to be added after painting and lining.

Please ignore the banana bend effect that is the camera not the model.

This is based on the old body which needed modifying to fit the chassis. New rear mountings and the front frames shortened.
