K Hatton
Hi all,I have to be honest and say after reading this blog I am in awe of the level of detail on your models micklner! I started out with a very basic triang horny flying Scotsman and recently purchased some of the Hornby "super detail" a3s (which I was impressed with) however your models are on another level altogether! My only question is regarding the victor wild a3 (page 22), I can only find images on google showing the numbering on the gn tender underneath the LNER lettering - not on the cab. Was this changed when the loco was converted from a1 to a3 class?I ask because I'm contemplating having one of mine converted and want to know if I would need the gn type tender re-number/lettering or not?Regards Edited February 22, 2017 by K Hatton
jwealleans
What has been said above with regard to tender numbering is correct. In 1928 the LNER reviewed their loco painting practice, abolishing lining for many goods classes, painting more classes black rather than green and moving the number on tender lcoos from tender to cabside. drmditch
What has been said above with regard to tender numbering is correct. In 1928 the LNER reviewed their loco painting practice, abolishing lining for many goods classes, painting more classes black rather than green and moving the number on tender lcoos from tender to cabside. Thus nicely anticipating the inability of some modellers (especially myself) to replicate lining with any confidence, and the easy availability of Halford's Satin and Matt Black! (I do have a green engine to work on, but it's well down the list!)
K Hatton
From what I know of the gresley A1/A3s the locos from 4470 - 4479 originally had the gn tenders you mentioned and as you said, the numbers on the tender body. When the higher capacity corridor tenders were built ( I think only 8 were built but not fully sure on this ) for the London - Edinburgh non stop runs which started in 1928 they were attached to selected locos ( I know 4472 Flying Scotsman was 1 of them but no info on the others ) Scotsman making the 1st run on May 1st 1928 the locos numbers were transferred to the cabsides. From loco 4480 Enterprise onwards their numbers were applied direct to the cabsides. So going off this would it be correct having the numbers on the tender? Sorry for the questions and thanks for all the help/advice!

Sorry for the questions and thanks for all the help/advice! Depends on what period you are modelling , yes if pre 1928, otherwise no.

micklner
More Thompson's A1/1 via Graeme's Resin and Hornby A3 and GBL Tender base finished . Work in progress on a A2/1 Duke of Rothesay which will is replacing my old Nucast version which has been sold on. Graeme's parts again with a Bachmann V2 Body, A2 chassis, GBL A4 roof and a much modified Bachmann GS Tender to represent post 1940 version.

micklner
Interesting derivative with the smaller tender Sure was as I never found a photo of the front end, I have the Isinglass drawing but a photo would have been much better. I have had to guess a couple of the details but near enough for me.
micklner
Some recent builds . K's Y8 much modified a while ago now with a permanent 1st wagon attached and the wagon being used for electrical pick up as she stalled even on electrofrog points due to the tiny wheelbase. Some Parkside Dundas Plate wagons with removable loads. Cattle wagons
RMweb Premium Daddyman Posted June 4, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 4, 2017 Nice! My dad has an ancient Y8, I suppose from the same source. It defies all laws of loco-building: it only has three pickups but never stalls (scratchbuilt track, though) and will haul 30 wagons!

RMweb Premium Daddyman Posted June 5, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 5, 2017 Like to see how that was built, mine struggles with anymore than in the photo !! . Yes, it defies all logic. I wrote "30 wagons", but I suspect it may be 42...Bizarre. Yours look a lot nicer though!

RMweb Premium Daddyman Posted June 5, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 5, 2017 V2 rocket under the Bonnet ? I'll video it next time I'm at my dad's. And maybe have a look under the bonnet. Even after 30-odd years, we still watch it gobsmacked.
micklner
Thanks, when mine had the original K's motor/gearbox it used to run like a demented nutter at crazy speeds until it died in a blue smoke haze. Perhaps your dads one still has the original motor ?

Perhaps your dads one still has the original motor ? Dunno, maybe. Funny thing is, I don't remember it as a jerky or overly fast runner. Maybe it was the trick that seems to have been prevalent among York modellers in the 1960s of setting chassis up wonky and then soaking them in Brasso for the running-in!
