A final photo for tonight.

I am starting to think that this is coming together.

Ballast finally down. Not my favourite task. Hopefully I can get on with the rest now.....

A couple of cruel close ups. Some tidying up required but it is meant to be a test track after all.

Disagree - not cruel close-ups at all - it all looks very good.

What did you use for the "ground" either side of the ballast shoulder?

Thanks,

Thanks Neal. Very kind of you.

I built the ground up with a thin layer of DAS. When dry, I topped it off with real ash, trying to get a fine finish.

I am trying out a few things to see how it works out. This layout is a test bed for me to make mistakes on.

This is how Sheep lane looks at the moment. Very much a work in progress but still able to sped half an hour playing trains.

Hi Neil. I know but they are there to stay on this one but rest assured my next layout will have them out, don't worry. It really does look better but I will live with them on Sheep Lane.

I is learning.

A little dab of vegetation might help disguise them?

Rob, if you have glued the ballast, especially with pva, the track will be rock solid, and you won't need them.

In the same way, once you've glued and screwed, once dry, you can remove the screws as well. :)

Just tried to remove a couple. Not budging and I think I will leave them in situ rather than risk causing damage. I can live with them.

I will round off tonight with a couple of views of the Beattie Well tank.

Next week will see the buildings stuck down and some detail added.

Hi Rob, just been enjoying your recent posts. For me this is a great example of "less is more". You've conjured up bags of realistic atmosphere with a bit of track, groundcover and three small sheds. I especially like the "still photos" of the wagons, so much railway about them.

Thank you for those kind words, Mikkel. This is what I am trying to achieve.

I have long admired your craftmanship with the Farthing layouts and the atmosphere they generate.

I am trying to keep it simple, mindful of the small space which Sheep Lane is.

This simple but effective little layout is also providing me with some great inspiration as I try to re-start my moribund modelling mojo.

That's at least  two of us then!

And I really enjoy this thread too - the epitome of 'modelling should be fun'!

Gentleman. I am quite taken aback by your kind words.

I had a bit of a trying day in work and to see these comments at the end of the day was quite uplifting. Sheep Lane is really earning its keep as a source of rest and relaxation and a way of having a bit of good clean fun.

As alluded to above, the plan is to progress the detailing with the first port of call being the buffer stops followed by the buildings. This seems to be the most enjoyable aspect of it all.

I called into my local shop on the way home and came away with another example of the Bachmann Midland 3F tender loco. It really is a nice model a true S&D loco.It remains to be seen how this example ends up. It may become a S&DJR example but we shall see. Looks right at home on Sheep Lane.

I shall post a more meaningful update later on but felt that I must respond to the above posts.

Thank you again.

Rob.
