jonhall
C11236: it's been many a year since the Hook of Holland last saw in international train. And it'll never happen again, as from last June, the railway is no longer a railway. The section from Schiedam now belongs to the RET, the local municipal public transport company, who will run metro's on the line. Even after the Randstadrail example debacle (2006/7) and with plenty of prep work done ahead of time, they still manage to have the schedule slip, so the conversion of the line, planned for an August/September opening, is now postponed to at least November, maybe even next year If you do hear more on slippage perhaps I could ask you to post an update? - I won't be the only one contemplating Eurospoor in November, and some of what we might plan to add to the trip will depend on a rapid connection from the ferry to NS. Thanks, Jon
eastwestdivide
Going back to Arth-Goldau, is there a station bench there with DaveF's bum-print on it? Oh, and if anyone wants an OV chip card with about €15 still on it, PM me. I forgot to get my refund last time I went. 15 euros is enough to use buses and metros, but you need to top it up to a bigger balance before you can use a train with it. RMweb Gold DaveF Posted July 9, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 9, 2017 Going back to Arth-Goldau, is there a station bench there with DaveF's bum-print on it? There probably is, I stayed in a hotel there for just over three weeks in 1988 and used the station everyday as well as spending time there every evening. RMweb Premium 31A Posted July 9, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 9, 2017 Now, one more thing you need to know when travelling by public transport in NL: you need an OVC. It's a chip-card similar to the London Oyster card and is valid for all public transport in the country. The card itself costs 7,50 euro's and then it needs loading up in a machine with enough to cover your journey. For foreign visitors who occasionally come over, not worth the trouble/effort/expense IMO. Again, if the need arises later on, drop me a PM. I believe there is a 'Disposable Chip Card' ("Eenmalige Chipkaart") which can be bought from station vending machines in the same way that you would buy an ordinary ticket, aimed at people (such as foreign visitors) who use Dutch public transport infrequently; these are intended for simple single or return journeys and cannot be topped up with credit. I understand the 7,50 Euro purchase fee doesn't apply to these.

RMweb Gold DaveF Posted July 11, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 11, 2017 A lot of interesting rolling stock in the Balsthal pictures! The OeBB seemed to delight in collecting old stock from other railways and then using it in everyday service. I'm not sure what it runs now. David It seems to style itself as both a Modern and an Historic train operator with 4 steam locos including an ex SBB Mallett as well as some electric stuff such as a DE6/6 Croc. https://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.oebb.ch/&prev=search Keith
