DRS Orders Vossloh UKlights

Recommended Posts

Perhaps we have got to the stage in life where we scrap the TOPS sequences and start on using UIC numbers.  With these you can potentially use on paper the same number on multiple items, BUT with the various parts to the complete number including didgits to identify if its a loco, wagon, MU or coach etc anything is possible.

See http://www.thewebtrain.co.uk/uic-vkn/Default.aspx?loc=rmw posted elsewhere on here.

Platypus.

That is this locos nickname, it's the platypus.

Any update on if/when we are due to see them in the UK?

Mark

Hi,

According to the latest Railway Magazine the class numbers 68001 - 68015 have recently been registered with Network Rail, so I assume they are fairly close, but it could just be a standard procedure before a loco goes into service and has nothing to do with time scale of delivery.

Maybe more to do with making it easier to lift off for maintenance?

The 1960s equivalent to carbon fibre, glass-fibre, was used for roof panels on several classes of loco, most noticeably the Class 33. In this case, not only did it make the panels easy to lift, but allowed some natural light into the engine compartment.

Regarding numbering, I have a very early 1960's Observer's Book of Railway Locomotives, which states that two new classes of diesel are on the drawing board, a 3.300 hp English Electric Co-Co to be numbered D1000 to D1021, and a Co-Co diesel hydraulic to be numbered D9000 to D9073, but "these numbers may be changed before delivery..."

Who knew?

Hi,

This has just appeared on YouTube:

It is one of the DRS Class 68's, yet to be painted, doing sound tests at Vosslohs Valencia test track.

Looks like they are getting closer

Definitely looks better and meaner in the flesh, than any of the mock ups or computer generated versions that I've seen. Also the photo shoppers have a good base colour to start with. Colas or Gbrf liveries anybody?

I wonder what it would look like in yellow?

Cheers,

Here demonstrating the new low emissions variant (A challanger for the Carry on Clagging Cup maybe?)

Look forward to seeing one if full new DRS livery,

As for a name, the cab side windows and the pointed sloping front give to me the look of a snake, so a viper maybe?

From the (limited) Facebook footage the 68 seems  to have a nice turn of speed/acceleration. Provided the power unit is up to scratch and it achieves class 66 levels of reliability there could be a queue to buy these beasties. They look cute too, love the off white/beige colour.............
