Newbryford's mostly Yellow workbench - "it's a drag, man......."

10 days since the last WB update.

It's not all glamorous locos and yellow stuff.

A BYA has come under the airbrush to be repainted into this:

I've just resprayed it red and had one of those DOH! moments

Despite knowing that the BYA's now carry a rectangular panel on the hoods - I've forgotten to add it.

Oh well - out with the thin plasticard and another coat of red.

Cheers,

Mick

In typical "last minute" mode, I've managed to fix the new side panels and fill in the small fillets above them. Quite pleased with how they look. Pics later.

Hopefully, I'll have it fully decalled on New Bryford this coming weekend at York.

Cheers,

Mick

It's a bit bright!

post-408-0-02186400-1397597169_thumb.jpg

(That's my shed behind the BYA "pig shed")

And with a few decals on.

post-408-0-94907000-1397597165_thumb.jpg

Quite a few more decals to do and a few detail touches with white paint, a quick coat of satin varnish and ready for the weekend.

Cheers,

Mick

Superb work on the BYA Mick.

Which reminds me - I need a finished pic. Didn't get a good one at York. It's now packed away until the DEMu showcase at the end of May.

Interesting Mick....

I've been chewing over doing that too.

Let's hope you've got a nice loooooonnnng rake of 10 or 15 wagons to do, you'll have them done in no time !

I suppose the cheats question is have you fabricated the stantions yourself and if so what from ?

Good luck....

Nick

Looking good Mick

What was the base for this and the ends?  Was it a Heljan cargo wagon?

Nik

Hi Nick & Nik,

Heljan Cargowaggon flat is the basis with laser cut mdf ends and stanchions. Kindly provided from Thesmudge and Andy7 of RMweb.

Hoping to take delivery of a few more to make a longer rake.

The prototype model above is now painted - blue ends and black underframe, but looks a bit odd without weathering as these wagons are now quite grime encrusted and it's quite difficult to tell if they have blue ends!

I've yet to design the transfers, but the intetntion is to make them myself. The predominant lettering is white on black, so I'll print them as black background on white transfer paper.

Pic taken from my back garden!

The KFA project is moving along nicely, with the stripping down of 8 Heljan Cargowaggon flats - pics later.

In the meantime - here's some yellow stuff.

As I've mentioned in posts above, the structure gauging train has been replaced by a pair of Mk2's with the laser gear bolted to the end of the instrument coach and brake force runner bar-coupled with an extended coupling.

The first pair is 977985/977986 and a second SGT has been formed with 72630/99666 - although 72630 hasn't yet been kitted out with the measuring gear.

Incidentally, 99666 & 977986 are the 2 Mk2's that are completely blanked windows and both have recently had a refurb that has seen 3 of the 4 doors sealed up and associated footboard removed. And to further muddy the yellow water (!), the remaining door is not in an identical place on the two vehicles........

As part of the refurbishment, there is a small vane across the top of the coach adjacent to the now welded over water tank hatch - I presume that this is to do with deflecting water away from the measuring gear.

I was lucky to catch 72630/99666 last week at Blackburn. The sealed door is visible on 99666

I have both 977986 and 99666 on the bench and have fitted the vane to them. This is 977986, aready in the paintshops and covered in masking tape.

A slot is cut with a razor saw.

post-408-0-23354800-1399586985_thumb.jpg

Then a section of 10 thou styrene added (this is thicker than required, but 5 thou is a bit fragile.

The vane is cut toan approximate shape

Looks good Mick. You need to remove the end guttering and down pipes too. They've chopped them off and presume welded over the end by the doors for the same reason as the strip you mention?

Cheers

And here they are.

Apologies for the dodgy pics.

The wagons are stripped down to the chassis with bogies. The transfers on the side have been rubbed down with a fibre-glass brush. (The donor wagons are the Heljan Corus Rail branded cargowaggons)

post-408-0-87875800-1400110636_thumb.jpg

The foldingside stanchions have been removed and the holes in the frame filled.

The floors have had their "bolsters" removed with the aid of some angled flush cutters and sharp knife. I've then scraped the resulting flat sections with the end of sharp knife to add "grain" to the floor. I've only had to do this for the 1st, 4th and 5th bolsters (from each end) as the others are covered up with the new stanchions.

Before and after.

And then this lot arrived in the post

post-408-0-43007300-1400110642_thumb.jpg

The new stanchions should be with me in the next day or two.

Cheers,

Mick

Great job as usual Mick,

I tried making a KFA a while ago, when I was younger...and much less experienced...and made a total mess of it...

I took some detail pics then, so I've attached them and a few I took of a newer batch of imported ones at Carlisle...if you fancy having a crack at them too...

These may be useful to anyone else attempting them, so I've posted them here instead of sending you a PM.

Hope they're ok, thanks,

Jack.

Hi Jack,

Useful load pics.

The KFA pics are from about three years or more - they don't have the circular holes in the end. My first "holey" KFA pic is March 2011.

TBH, I fancy doing the Rover Hi-Cube based KSA's.

I've been busy with the ends - fitting microstrip and handrails.

post-408-0-70602400-1400623433_thumb.jpg

It looks like a pile of matchsticks, but I've got 112 (for now) stanchions to assemble! With a few left over for two more KFA's later

Cheers,

Mick
