Evening Derek.

There's no such thing as a sad old Lunester on here. We're all happy (!!) and age is of no consequence!

Yes, I can just imagine the scenario on KL - not that it'll ever move out of its bunker (to go to an exhibition). Somebody will probably tell me that the scree slope, landslip or hill-erosion feature are at the wrong angle: they should be at 7 degrees, not 5!!

I hope you were suitably polite with the chap!

Now, the question is, do I go and wire up a few more droppers. Maybe it's a peculiar response, but hearing the wind howling made the bunker feel a few degrees cooler today!

Blimey Jeff - not including the Helm wind on the layout as well are you?  Interesting new type of modelling realism there I reckon  :O  :O

What a very good idea, Mike! Certainly would add atmosphere! I've only one DCC cound-equipped loco, so maybe you've just hit the nail-on-the-head for making up that certain "je ne sais quoi!"

Actually, the idea wouldn't work - the sound effects in the bunker are more likely to be Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin!

Jeff

Edit: If classical's your fancy, there's some very good windy parts in Richard Strauss's Eine Alpensinfonie...

Jeff,

While you're looking out for 3mm mdf on Friday, have a look at the bendy stuff, if your supplier stocks it, as it may do what you want better than the straight stuff. I know I keep mentioning the bendy stuff but I really don't have shares in its manufacturer, honest.

Finding 3mm is a tricky task these days. I used to be able to go to Homebase and get my fill of 2mm, 3mm and 6mm, which served many of my modelling needs. Nowadays, 2mm and 3mm are just about extinct in B&Q. Wickes had a better range last time I went looking, but even then I'm not sure if they had "the bendy stuff". Is that sheet MDF with what appear to be corrugations on one side? If so, I'll have a look for some.

So far today it's been Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath and Green Day.

BTW, I've posted a reply on Trebudoc about point rodding.

Yes, thanks for that. I saw the links on T and had a look at them. Posted an acknowledgement on Oxted. So we go round and round and round.....

I did go back into the bunker, but after 30 minutes I'd had enough. More jobs tomorrow!

Btw, you are definitely a Lunester. Those that have owned up, including AndyP and bill (Mythocentric) have impeccable taste in music.

I'll set up a Lunester "social thread" in the S&C section where people can post their interests, musical or otherwise. Or just have a whinge! Kind of "Wheeltappers", Lunester-style!

Jeff and OTHER LUNESTERS, for the backscene have a look at White Faced Hardboard, I have also bent for the backscene on Loch Leven. IMHO it is very flexible, easy to paint on or stick a backscene on.

Cheers Andy.

I hadn't thought of using hardboard - yet I've 3 or 4 sheets of the stuff sat in the garage bit, next to the bunker. I'll have a look to see what sizes B&Q stocks - this could be ideal for the curved corner access areas, as it's easy to bend.

Picasso? More like da Vinci with the quality of your backscenes!

Btw, I may have opened a real "can of worms" with the Lunester Social Thread. I hope it goes down ok....

Thanks Andy. I've been a follower of the Great North Line and it's previous incarnations since day 1 of joining the Forum. Richard was the person who responded to my first ever post and welcomed me as a no-longer-lurker!

I actually discussed the backscenes a couple of times on his thread. Both he and Jonathan (Rowsley17D) identified them for me. A lot of people use them - look at Unicorn's "Bishopscombe" as an example. I'll get a set when I start work on the station section.

As far as I know, IPA won't affect the PVA. In pure form it's not a solvent for PVA and it tends to evaporate rather than sitting on the ballast. The most awkward places are often not ballasted in the first place (eg. tunnels) and the main scenic areas can always be cleaned by hand. I wouldn't use any strong solvents anywhere on the layout.

I'm guessing you're on another 12-hour session?

Jeff

I was impressed with the way Richard used them curving round things to close areas off and cheat more space than he has.

Not 12hours Jeff, a week of 8hr nights, what fun!

Hi Jeff and all,

Far too many pages to catch up on so a quick summary of what I have noted...

Backscenes: apart from 3mm MDF which I agree is getting hard to source, the quality is poor compared to a few years ago whereby the surface finish is 'furry' rather than hard pressed and 'shiny', problem is, it tends to get dog-eared around the edges easily.

You can get the 'bendy' verson which is 6mm but you need to ask for which way it bends eg: width v length. its usually ok

There is also 'bendy' ply, again its 3mm but does bend well though the surface and edges can be rough as in most ply's

Landscaping: Loved the MR spoof -something to aim for eh!

Was that Wild Boar Fell I saw ? Truthfully the setting is beginning to look awesome. I am considering (and so should you) buying a number of packs of sheep every time I see them otherwise a bank loan may be needed to stock them there fells!

Crack on, I'm going to bed.

Cheers

mike

Hi Jeff,  I've been having internet issues, so haven't been here for a while.  Your fellside is looking good - adding the back scene boards really does give it some focus, and makes it easier to see the hill.  How is the wiring coming on?

All the fiddle yard droppers (50 pairs) are into terminal block, neat and labelled. I've checked 13/15 turnouts in the yard for ease of tie-bar movement and that the Cobalts switch the blades on DC. I've also started running wires from the main blade switching panel to some of the Cobalts - takes ages.

So I could clean the non-turnout track and solder some connections to the bus at any time now. That will allow me to move locos several metres up and down the yard on any of the roads. If that works ok, I'll start polarity checking. I should get onto that in the next few days.

If you haven't seen it, I've created a Lunester "Social Area" thread. Have a good read. And have a good laugh at post #20 from Jason - it's hilarious (and true!!).

Morning Jeff, Bendy mdf - it is the stuff with grooves on the back and I got mine from B&Q on Portrack Lane, although I do notice that they are not carrying the number of lines that they used to. No doubt in these times of austerity, they don't want to carry too much stock and the folks of Teesside just don't have the disposable income anymore. If you want a look at the stuff then I think I have got some in the celler of my old house (my daughter has it now)where I have yet to dismantle my old layout. You would have to collect it from over the river though.

Thanks for that. I'll go down to B&Q (Portrack) at the weekend and see what they have - and Wickes is just across the road. I need a few other items as well, so I'll have a "mooch" around!

A bit of socialising this morning is going to hinder bunker work, but I've a thing or two to do this afternoon.

I've just tried editing the Index in post 1. The result was a load of formatting rubbish, brackets etc, rendering the list unintelligible. I've pasted yesterday's update copy Index from post 3035 back into post 1.

However, the original, pre-index, text of post 1 is now mucked up.

Has anyone else come across this problem? All was working ok yesterday. I've PMd Andy Y about it.

Hi Jeff,

Cor Blimey, I don't read the forum for a few weeks and next thing the track is down and there are hills appearing!

Progress indeed.

I was looking attend pics where the plaster had 'settled' (subsided?) between the formers, have you tried going old school and using chicken wire to create the sub structure?

Al

Lurking Lunester !

Hi Al. Really good to hear from you! We MUST arrange a catch-up....especially as you only live 2 miles away!!

You're right about the "settling" - though it's only of the plaster bandage shell on the formers (bandage placed on top of masking tape - the tape "gives"). the plaster itself sets to shape rock hard.... But using chicken wire would have stopped the settling in the first place, you're right. I just used what I had to hand.

Anyway, let's have a meet-up to discuss life, the universe and everything!

This "problem" has resolved itself - as far as I can tell.

The Index is upto page 159 and includes Jason's immortal message from page 1 of the Lunester Lounge!

Going into the bunker now to do an hour or two of woodwork - sick of 3 days of wires!!

Andy - I know you like your pictures. There'll be 2 or 3 later this evening, I promise. They may be "same old, same old", but at least they are pictures!

Having spent a couple of days fiddling with wires and turnouts, I decided it was about time to build the next section of hillside. A couple of pics, "same old, same old" as I said in an earlier post. The latest section is only half covered in plaster as I've run out of the stuff.

The next, and last section is going to be interesting. It has to accommodate 2 tunnel portals, rock faces and the rear will be arranged to hold a curved backscene board - something that wasn't easy to achieve at the other end. The hillside is gradually rising, right to left in the photo, from a max of about 30cm at right to 35cm at left. The final section will go higher: 40cm (about 16") and steep faces - suitable for rocks.

Anyway, that's for next week. More electrics tomorrow!
