You're going to need a sackfull of static grass Jeff :D

I'm hoping to genetically engineer the stuff so it germinates in plaster!

Too bl**dy right, Jason. I think I'll take out shares in Noch and Silflor!

Do you get discount for buying 50kg bags of it? :jester:

Duncan

You do, Duncan. They're so cheap that I think you should buy me a bag for my birthday!!

Seriously worried grass-growing Lunester  :O   :O

I like the way the viaduct is lost in the scenery.

Yes Peter, it seems to be disappearing amongst the natural "grandeur". If I can maintain that illusion I'll be pleased. The wonderful valley (I refer to the real thing, not my model) should dominate, with the railway a mere conduit passing through.

If I can make it look like the railway went through the scenery, rather than the scenery grew around the railway, I'll have succeeded in my aim.

I remember you once commenting that the viaduct characterised how you saw the S&C. I hope what I end up with is a fair representation of the "character". Keep me posted on how I'm doing - it's the feedback that can only improve matters.

I notice that the humour isn't getting any better on here!

I think you should club together to create a charity: "Lunester Aid". Proceeds to buy the 200kg of flock and static grass needed for KL....

Hey, it's a scary prospect - I may have to turn the valley into a volcanic landscape to save money!!

I second Peter - even without the plaster coating in the valley, the scenery is looking really good.  I like the long run of hillside without even a single sleeper in view!  The view across the station does beg a question though - are you going to try and make sure that where ever you stand to watch the trains go by, you will see only scenery, and not the hole in the middle of the layout?

I don't think you'll need that much static grass, it's the static heather and scrub that will break the bank...

Finally got on my lazy ass this evening and actually did some modelling - watch out for an update shortly...

Thanks Michael. You and Peter are my 2 main scenic gurus, so I'm happy with your comments.

Below is an old (last week!!) photo - showing my intent on the station side at the valley head. Feel free to comment - it's only an idea at the moment (though the cutting is based on this link:

I think your hardest job scenically (Is that a word?) after Lunefell is going to be getting the station to sit in the site without it looking as though you've just ploncked it in. Theres not much space left around the yard etc for much heavy plywood engineering, so have you any thoughts yet?

BTW that expanse of fell is seriously impressive and the way the railway is lost is a masterstroke!

No train running yet?

The plan looks good Jeff - I wonder if the small hillock should extend down the side of the station - as if you come out the tunnel, over the viaduct then cut through the hillside into the next valley to reach the station...  Not sure how much space you have on the yard side, but if the ground falls away from the station, that might look quite good.  Would depend on where you'd want to stand to operate / watch the trains go by...

I bit like Dent Station then? That would give a good feeling that it is valleyside, and not in some sort of artifical plateau. Will you be able to get the start of a hill to the wall side of the road?

Having had a close look I have to admit that I concur with Andy about the station. It's probably going to take more thought and work than the rest of the scenics.

However, no doubt you already have a plan up your sleeve.

This link shows the environs of Kirkby Stephen's 2 platforms.

http://www.visitcumbria.com/simon/kirkbystephen-8036.jpg

I'd better not post the picture as some copyright holder will jump down my throat!

Reverse the photo and you have KL, with fields behind platform 2 - along with trees. These would look nice between the operating well and the platform.

And so we reach post 4000. As good a place as any to put another copy of the Index. Bit more memorable than post 3035!!

                                                                           INDEX

The thread is getting HUGE. I thought it might be useful to provide a quick way to find some of the main MODELLING bits. Hope this helps.

2c from Down Under: I'm with Andy on this one - I think if you carried on the idea of contours dropping down into the scene, a model that is Dent-esque would work well.

By carring on the contours from the "small hillock" along in front of the station, you avoid the flat earth* scenario, and the railway then looks like it came after the scenery...

(having said that, I also appreciate that Kirkby Stephen is a lot more level than Dent, so may be what you want to follow)
