A Nod To Brent - a friendly thread, filled with frivolity, cream teas and pasties. Longing for the happy days in the South Hams 1947.

This is fun  :mail:

But difficult! I thought the dark haired woman between the two benches  might be a cigarette ad - there seem to have been many targetted at women in the 30s. But so far no cigar!

I thought it might be hair and beauty but just went through nearly 300 pages of a specialist site with no luck. It was quite amusing though. Several ads offering women who had lost their boyfriends by being "too thin" the chance for instant weight gain (!) Many ads suggesting that bad breath would inevitably lead to spinsterhood and two or three suggesting that careers were just things woment who couldn't get husbands did to fill their time. Sing along now "oh the times they are a changing'..........."

Got a slight shock when I used googles search-from-an-image facility on the one with the bottle surrounded by sunrays. One result was an x-ray of a pelvis with a bottle lodged in it with a caption in portugese relating to risky sexual practices!

Does anyone else agree that this might say "Players" across the top?

I haven't found a Players' poster anything like it though...

attachicon.gifplayersposter.jpg

I thought that poster might some sort of short timetable/table of charges from the "block" in the middle, perhaps relating to buses or boats for Salcombe, although that doesn't make much sense on an island platform at Brent.

I presume I'm correct in thinking that the poster next along from the Quality Street poster the features a suitcase with two labels? No idea what it's for at the moment, presumably not a resort destination, but too smart for something like PLA - still looking.

That looks to me like a theatre or cinema poster.  It definitely doesn't look like any Players cigarette advertising I have ever come across.

There was a Palladium cinema in paignton - see the hoarding under the footbridge on this shot

There were Pavillion and Princess theatres in Torquay and the Festival in Paignton

Given that it does look to start with a P and F is not that far away from P at that distance

Reckon we should share this with Ashcombe on Early Risers, she is local and has thespian leanings. (stop sniggering at the back Spams)

Amazing how similar the women all look in the adverts from back then. Been looking through loads of adverts for Woman's Own, My Home and such like. They are all Liz Taylor except with longer hair. Wonder what my wife will think if she sees my search history...

The Princess theatre in Torquay is still going fairly strong. And I happen to know that Ashcombe & OH were in a theatre audience last night in Paignton, but that one is called Bijou. This afternoon she is rehearsing at Torquay's Little Theatre for "She Stoops to Conquer", which opens next Saturday. As for her leanings.......

EDIT - The Bijou is the theatre company performing, the theatre is called the Palace, which fits our need rather well? A further search shows that Paignton Operatic & Dramatic Society have been performing there since 1922, so fine for the GWR era.

EDIT EDIT - Wikipedia seems to think the Festival theatre opened in 1967, became a multi-screen cinema in 1999. If so we can forget that.

Stubby you are wasted designing bogs and vans. Get out a become a resident poet somewhere nice like Mousehole.

Brilliant, just brilliant.

Quackers.

Combine the two - just imagine the eloquent prose that must adorn his own lavatorial walls!... ;)

Thanks, I was quite impressed myself, but CTMK is still cursing the day I spilt half a pot on the dining room carpet...!

I'm told the ladies loo graffiti is invariably better - they have both hands free!

From the few viewings that I have had of the interiors of the ladies loos, the grafiti tends to be a lot more graphic in detail than the gents, it fair makes you blush.
