Yes, the diag. 2406 BCK is THE vehicle for your ACE branchline portion. It is, IMHO, a real pity that Bachmann didn't decide to tool this version. I certainly would have blagged a couple for Appledore.

As somebody who travels regularly between Warrington and Croydon, I used to be a regular customer on the Sussex Scot and Manchester - Brighton services up until they stopped running in December 2008. Since then, I drive if I have to take much luggage. Dragging bags accross that London is such a monumental PITA that I would rather take my car. I was quite happy to take the slow train directly between WBQ and ECR and trade off the extra journey time for the convenience. Now, I am denied that choice and consequently drive much more often than I used to. Given the congestion on the motorways, the old cross country service didn't take much longer than it usually does to drive in any case.

If one must play the blame game, then the villain is Ernest Marples, the Secretary of state for Transport who hired Richard Beeching as his reasuringly expensive hit man, while at the same time owning a major motorway construction company. The steam loco hauled Kenny Belle sets, DEMUs, DMUs and TC sets latterly used on the Kenny Belle all had first class accomodation, so maybe the Kenny Belle was the exception that proves the rule?

The motor coaches were all steel and built by outside contractors. The other vehicles were as others have said, essentially standard Southern Railway stuff, so they never matched and neither did the Pullman Car!

Lovely picture of a 6PUL (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SR_Class_6Pul), but the pressence of the Pulman is perfectly normal for these units.

The solution to OHLE free electrification is simple. Provide a phone charging point at evey seat and use the batteries in people's phones to power the train without telling them.
