Midland Main Line Electrification
griffgriff replied to 96701's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
Very true but I live on the line so perhaps my view may be more valid than a Waterloo traveler ( been there done that lol) but if they can’t persuade someone who is actually looking at EMP from their bedroom window to use it then they need to work harder to get my £ ….. btw loading on MML wasn’t exactly heavy before lockdown unless you wanted an early train….. in which case demand required a kings ransom rather than just a second mortgage Griff -

My sister in law has her own parking where she resides in north London and it’s only 5 minutes from the tube…. I’m very lucky in this respect. Grff -
Midland Main Line Electrification

Just an observation of my own habits. When I go to London I normally drive. It’s cheaper, suits my circumstances and more convenient (and faster in most cases but speed - and this is an important point - isn’t an issue for me). When I have traveled to London by train recently then I’ve gone to Litchfield or Tamworth to take advantage of significantly cheaper fares… again speed isn’t my priority. I can’t see HS2 being cheaper so I doubt I’ll be changing my habits any time soon…. I’m now going to reveal the ultimate irony…. …..East Midlands Parkway is walking distance away (approximately 2 miles) and I’ve not used EMP to go to London for nearly 10 years! I admit my circumstances are particular to me and I doubt there are many others that share them but my point about price is, I feel, important. It doesn’t matter how much extra capacity you make if the majority of passengers don’t change their habits because it’s too expensive. Those Euston stoppers will still be crowded by those seeking a bargain and they will be joined by those who can’t afford high speed rail. Just a thought. Griff -
Piloting situations perhaps? On the SR 33s and 73s often displayed a red and a white blind when so engaged in the same way as steam locos on piloting duties had a red and white lamps on display. Griff

I’m pleased for you. It obviously works for you but it’s obvious it doesn’t work for some and I’m not pay £70 for something they may or may not display adverts… this is the only feature I’m interested in as I have no use for anything else…. Besides as long as the video box thing keeps appearing in the same place my thumb has learnt where to be to be able click on the X quick enough. It’s no big deal for the amount of time I use the site. Griff

How to convert Airfix cattle to GWR?
griffgriff replied to MJI's topic in GWR Rolling Stock: model and prototype
Did you look at the sample page on the link? It’s just about legible. Griff -
You can do that as well with the plug method if you wanted to Griff
-
If I may offer a suggestion? A reliable (and dare I say) foolproof method of isolating in these circumstances is having the feed to the lifting section via a plug and and short lead to a socket on the open end. It’s then only ever possible to have power on the lifting section when it’s down. Griff

It’s like comparing a 50’ flat screen TV with a fridge freezer…. One you want against one you need…. I remember the dismay I felt when I saw a 47 on the front…. Even a Tinsley one … popular they were not…. …they were everywhere … make of that what you will Griff
-
Perhaps it’s a bit more complicated than that? Especially if you consider your popular prototype reasoning. Griff

That’s looking very crisp Paul. They look much better without the mud flaps along the body. It will look great on a war flat but how many do you need? Griff

Yep…. What’s a normal life? I’m afraid I’ve forgotten. Griff -

Then that’ would be observing restrictions would it not? -

I’m a little concerned that 30% observe no restrictions. Why would I want to attend a show where nearly 1 and 3 put themselves at risk? Griff -
A Frankenstein of an egg.... ok you have a reasonably common chassis but there are hell of a number of differences in the body. Not so much body snatcher more body gobbler. Having said that.... it would be lovely to have a proper Romanian Grid on the shelves again. Griff

Not between Manchester and Leeds it wouldn’t Griff

That’s pretty much my point... a nice seat on a moving train... I doubt if many would give a hoot if it travelled at 75 or 150mph. Griff

Has anyone bothered to ask what the consumer wants? ....it might be a good place to start. Griff

It’s environmentally costly to accelerate and maintain high speeds with heavy ‘high performance’ trains and its pointless when the cities they are serving along the trans Pennine corridor are so close together.... besides most commuters would, I’m sure, prefer somewhere comfortable to sit rather than saving 5 minutes getting across the middle of England at great cost. Griff

Sound project aside ..... that’s a really nice piece of work Griff

If you were starting a new rtr manufacturer...
griffgriff replied to Joseph_Pestell's topic in Smaller Suppliers
For what it’s worth.... I’d go budget and (dare I say) design clever. Locos less than £100. Replicate a mix of popular choices. However, make sure the models are dimensionally correct and run well. Think Lima 47 body on a Vitrains chassis or Hachette mk1s. That way you will attract a range of punters. Some will be happy as it is but others may bring them up to a their desired standard.
