Once you get past Lancaster it's all pretty scenic, depends on the sort scenery you want, Cumbria and the borders region is very mountainous and scenic, not just once you get north of Glasgow and Edinburgh. What sort of railway do you want to model probably narrows it down more - single or double line, electrified or not.
  2. Tanpit Yard at Leeds today - nothing moving or is it? - trains under the loading tracks running at almost imperceivable speed. So here is a layout where there is literally always something moving, you just need to be watching very closely.
  3. Meeting the prospective son number one's in laws.  Took several Gin & Tonics to prepare.   Made it through and now back home, knackered and extremely full from all the food at the restaurant.  But came through unscathed and no faux pas.

  5. @Dagworth all you've shown here is that there were perfectly good older models that with a bit of spit and polish look the part when operating on a nice big layout. And who'd have a Big Mac without Big Mac sauce?

  7. Why can't he post on Twitter? It's an opinion, I am sure others disagree with the opinion, but it is his right to have an opinion and post about it. If I was buying one I'd be a bit miffed about the capacitor being in a window. If Bachmann turned out the 47 now and said only one cab is detailed because they wanted to put a speaker in the other end, we'd be up in arms I am sure. (Woodenhead is currently considering this on a Farish 37 by the way..)

  9. And no-one can insist that @Erixtar1992 has to share the same opinion as others - it's one opinion, others may disagree, but it's still an opinion. From what I have seen and I am not in the market for one, there are capacitors visible in the carriages, makes it look like a last minute change rather than something planned as people would not expect it on a premium model. Then there is the light bleed that some people are seeing, and Hornby have recent history here with the DVT, it shouldn't happen, wouldn't have been an issue if lighting had not been fitted but fitted as an afterthought rather than in the original design.
  10. The new loco lift also looks like you can join more than two together - modular is probably the word. In N gauge probably more useful than 00 seeing as you'd need two per engine or coach in 00 but certainly more flexible than the old one. Cost will be the issue, I cannot imagine these being cheap.

  12. It's when blokes start making small-talk - football, cricket etc that it gets awkward, reminds me of the IT crowd where they end up having to learn how to behave and talk with football fans. Mind for me I soon cut the conversation down - Stranger: "Did you see the match?" Me: "No!" or Stranger: "What team do you support?" Me: "I don't". Recently ended up in a conversation about IT Scrum Masters instead, which was an unexpected tangent from the gas engineer after I had shut down his attempts to open football talk.

With a back condition and being used to the creature comforts of office/home based working, are you sure you'd want to step into HGV driving, long stints of driving, unsocial hours, pressure to get deliveries no matter what the road conditions and using Motorway services for food/showering etc. I'm not saying don't think about it, but I couldn't imagine myself going from doing SQL to being a lorry driver, it's a massive shift. I also note your comments on Autism, whilst you may find that there are less people to have to converse with and that suits you, you might find the banter among the drivers difficult to contend with as well. This is coming from someone who enjoys the isolation that working from home and Covid has brought me. If you're not comfortable with all the strangers that being a bus driver would bring, then imagine driving a couple of hundred miles to deliver something and having to deal with people you've never met whilst loading/unloading, then driving another 200 miles and seeing more strangers. Have you considered shifting to SQL, that's what I did back in 2002 never looked back and MS Office is like another alien world to me now.

  15. And in my younger days doing that regularly sometimes I would just keep heading north on the M1 and come back to Manchester via Woodhead, the M1 always seemed someone saner than the queues and mad driving on the M6 north of Brum.
  16. I think we've all seen those projects 'on time and on budget' but fail to mention it only does 80% of what it was meant to and key elements that would create the most benefit were missing. But I still got very drunk at the celebratory back slapping meal for the project completion in the solid knowledge it was my neck on the chopping block if I didn't make those in charge realise that I was now running this new 'solution' with not one but both hands tied behind my back.

I got my invitation for the booster yesterday, booked in for Monday, could have gone today but I have to meet the prospective in laws on Saturday and I didn't fancy feeling unwell if this time I do have a reaction to the vaccine. In our area they appear to have now got a new location for the jabs, used to be 2 minutes from my home but now it's about 20 minutes away. Not unhappy about this, the hordes of people queuing for the first lot of vaccinations made getting in and out of my road very difficult.

Maybe because of COP26 in a week's time - don't want to worry the world leaders that the UK is not back fully open for business, or the optics of being seen cavorting in Glasgow whilst England and Wales are being told to WFH and mask up. Then there is the matter of how often lockdowns become the norm if the Government implements plans too readily - bottom line - financial support for the cost of the lockdowns which are going to be more difficult given the inflationary pressures of the cost of home heating at present.
  20. You're probably right, it was just in reference to a sealed lorry riding across England, which is no different, why not simply ship them as you say. However, given how busy the Channel is, the awful weather then through a tunnel from France to Liverpool would be faster and incur only a short transit by ship. Someone somewhere is doing the math to work out the most cost effective long term solution I am sure.
  21. Why a lorry, how about simply a container - transfer from road to rail in France, train through tunnel, traction change in UK, onward travel to Liverpool where it can be put onto a ship to move across to Ireland.
