  1. The Double Fairlies look nice, however, DCC ready N gauge shunters, looks like the effort going in to 009 is paying off for N gauge too. I have an 08 and an 04 awaiting me being brave enough to chip them, more confident with the 08, however, I now have a safe option and likely an 08 with sound maybe in future if they have got a chip inside the 04. For steam, it also means the J72 may be back on after being pulled because of it's size in the past.
  2. Nooooo It only needed some wd40 and a tin of paint. Another year and it probably could have gained ancient woodland status.
  3. Just as long as no teddy bears were hurt in the process.
  4. They only do that on the older pre-announced stuff which they still update on, but as there is less and less on that list then there is less of this to show in updates. All newer models coming through development only appear when they are close to shipping so will be decorated in most cases unless it is a one off like the class 69.
  5. The days of paying by cheque, postal orders and your money is gone are now past. Making an online order with any bona fide business is via online payment methods which involve a card or paypal with protection, anyone asking for a personal bank transfer or Paypal personal payment is a red flag. Given this is a legitimate business with an online payment presence, it should be simply ask your provider to get you your money back.
  6. Pete Waterman demonstrated how good modern locomotives including Hornby are with the Chester Cathedral layout - those locos were doing real mileage without casualties.
  7. Nor in the LMS days and BR days up until the point of DVTs and trains no longer splitting at Carstairs, then it all went downhill and now it is just an efficient machine transporting people north and south.
  8. Social Media is always listening, looking, capturing metadata - spooky.
  9. it should also be remembered, whilst the 390s are getting some refurbishments now, by the time that HS2 is sending it's non tilt high speed services north the 390 will be nearing 30 years old and ready for retirement - being replaced by the HS2 trains.
  10. Glasgow trains are not packed to the rafters now, always been easier to get good deals from Cumbria over Manchester (work would sometimes see me start from Cumbria) and the peak hour restrictions on northwest bound trains were never so strict on the Scottish services. I cannot see an increased frequency of Anglo-Scottish services, the Pendo trains will reduce replaced by HS2 services. Also remember, it is the same franchisee taking over the HS2 running as WCML so they did not lose income from the switchover.
  11. NO! There will be no frothing on this thread, too much spilt beer already this year.
  12. Looks like the Cumbrian coast trains will use platform 0 - not much else that short out of the station unless they want S&C services to use it too. Still looks to have plenty of through lines to allow freight services to pass.
  13. See above ^^^^^^^. No getting excited, nothing to see here.
  14. It may upset the residents of Lime St and Elm St - the route is now a footpath by the river, a Lidl may also be very close to the route as well. However, it may be possible to reinstate it, though I doubt in reality the WCML at that far north would really ever want more routes to improve capacity, it's not that big an alternative and it may be simpler to remodel Carlisle station itself for through freight on the west side of the station than re-open a bit of curvy railway that would also need to be electrified. Capacity improvements on the WCML seem to be required more between Crewe and Preston - returning more four track where it had been reduced or as with the some sections of the southern half adding extra tracks where they did not previously exist. Once past Preston, the line becomes quiet, even quieter after Carnforth. If anywhere needs improvements it is in the approach to Glasgow, quite a spiders web of routes and junctions.
  15. I think the issue comes down to what you know and what you are used to - if you are used to being able to walk to all major facilities - supermarkets, shopping centre, doctors, dentist & hospital or it is only a short regular bus hop then it's going to be a massive adjustment when you out of town/city. But if you have spent much of your life living this way then it is normal and you make adjustments as necessary. In youth, you have time to plan, you have time to adapt, but once elderly it becomes more difficult, especially when you need additional support or you may no longer be able to drive. My wife would love to live in the country, but she doesn't do the shopping, ferry people about to hospital, it would be me in for the shock and I am not sure I'm up for such a massive shift.
  16. Don't you mean 'Swindonised', I reckon the top edge of the windshield was painted bronze too.
  17. Pendos are probably the last of their kind for the WCML - technology is always moving forward and with all trains now generally moving faster engineering curves for higher speed trains without tilt is now possible. The Pendo and the APT before it was to cope with very slow moving and very fast moving trains existing in the same space - all trains now go a lot faster especially freight trains, so the need for a tilting train will be gone by the time the Pendos are up for a replacement.
  18. They've told you by email of a delay, and contacting the office they have suggested you give it a few days more - I think they are not ignoring you and that the magazine will arrive either by Thursday or soon after if you have to contact them again, I don't think you have a lot to worry about.
  19. Web page on Hydrogen cars: https://www.hydrogenhub.org/2017/10/31/introduction-to-hydrogen-cars/
  20. Lightweight powered Permanent Way trolley - for PW workers to get to site i.e. an early Wickham trolley type vehicle. Or the GW was looking at radical solutions for poorly patronaged routes.
  21. Maybe, but perhaps no-one has been willing to pay for it until now. Now the whole world might want hydrogen and Australia has the means to produce it and at the same time get the rest of the world to pay for upgrading Australia's own grid.
  22. But little different to an oil tanker leaving the Middle East to travel around the world delivering oil. All that vast space in Australia, masses of strong sunlight and surrounded by a vast ocean - sounds like Australia could be the new Middle East in terms of fuel production.
  23. Did you always wear that collar when exhibiting Engine Wood, or just for the Halloween shows?
