  1. Thank you. Actually largely powders used wet and dry on this one. Also railmatch frame dirt. I allways assumed that was the reason....but it is dangerous to assume.
  2. I turned 20057 into 20055. It's a nice model. I am tempted to get another....but not sure what to renumber it as.
  3. Jury's out on the 08. Stripped virtually all the paint off one side. Broke the hand rail doing so. Making a new wire hand rail that will look better than the original anyway. Will test weather over part of the LNER blue. We shall see. Might be the first one I have seriously mucked up, might not be. Boxcester has a southern region feel today. Resprayed, renumbered and weathered 73122 in the yard with newspaper stock.
  4. Although I have improved it since the picture above. I can't live with it and I am slowly taking the paint off. It will take some time. Body is now off the 25. I do have a suitable rattle can colour for the fronts. So I will get stuck into that and will slowly work on the 08.
  5. The underframe on the 31 was the same. A coat of railmatch frame dirt then a darker wash of wet weathering powder and then the excess rubbed off with cotton buds. Leave the silver on the buffershanks untill last. You can also mix up some talc powder with paint to create grease on the buffers. I havent seen the O gauge paint job, I guess it is a bit easier at a larger scale. I think the 08 might look OK but I would not be happy with it if I compared to my other effort. I will persevere with it for a day or two more. I am a bit of a perfectionist so I am not conviced I will be happy with it.
  6. Not convinced on the rail match faded blue and not convinced on how well I can paint it on. When I compare it to 08375 it looks clumsy. I will revisit tomorrow. I might conceded defeat and get some kind person on here to respray it. Which I had to do with my Dapol 73. Given that my Heljan 25 is a very lemon yellow I might get that done too. 08375 08835 Meanwhile 33053 enters the fuel point. If anyone reading this can respray the 08 a faded rail blue and a Heljan 25 nose ends the correct yellow please get intouch. Thanks Steve
  7. STAGE 2 Basic paint. I am not being too careful at this stage. A coat of frame dirt over the underside and bufferbeams. Just a first pass. It knocks the reds back ready perhaps for some yellow. Railmatch blue over the white as a first coat, the roof actually will become a frame dirt colour. As you can see the removal of the transfer at the end means the black needs touching up. So it's work in progress, it will take several passes. But the aim is to have everything in its correct base colour, nothing detailed. For example as long as the sides are blue that is all that matters at this stage. The only care taken is to keep the paint thin and not get it in the wrong places.
  8. This is one of my 31s. Quite a good way to weather them, Steve..... Is base paint is oil based. And then cover most of it especially around the grills with weathing powder, water based frame dirt style muck and then rub in and remove with kitchen paper and cotton buds, It leaves the gunk in right places.
  9. It's going to perhaps be a slow process. And I will be repainting this without an airbrush.....however it is going to be a work worn gronk, so perhaps I will get away with it. STAGE 1. Remove the body. And remove all the existing transfers. I will see if I can get away with painting over some of the remaining red lining.
  10. I think most of my pictures from previous weathering attempts were all lost. So I will re-post up a step by step as to how I approach it. I guess find one approach to it that works for you and stick with it.
  11. Wagons or Locos? I am really looking forward to the 08 project. Bought second hand for 100pounds. I hope it goes well, we shall see! The trouble is with new stock it tends to be very expensive these days. So mucking it up can be expensive.
  12. Thanks for the encouragement, I will post up pictures Andrew. After a bit of research the 08 Liverpool St pilot will become 08835 Photo credit. John Woolley.
  13. I have been shopping. So some new weathering projects Firstly a new Heljan class 25. This will be renumbered and detailed as 25190. A very nice model...but the ends are lemon yellow! Heljan often can not seem to get it right. This might be my last model from them. Two 08s. My existing 08375 now has the correct underbelly tanks so they will be weathered in. And the new Liverpool street pilot will become a very faded WR air braked machine, not sure which one yet. Want to get together a bit of a random engineering train. So bought some wagons for 10pounds each, which I was pleased with, except the van wide which is new. Also picked up three coal wagons at 10pounds each So that lot will keep my occupied for a while. Cheers Steve
  14. Hello Kevin. Managed to take some pictures for you. An overview. The single track mainline runs in the background. It is in my mind split into three connected dioramas in the foreground. To the left is the stabling point. In the center is the fuel point and to the right is the yard. All the stock is stored underneath and the layout can be lifted off and turned round to get different perspectives. I started it about 12 years ago and slowly expanded it and hacked things about and improved things. I am now very happy with it. My one bug bear is the track. I really wish it was bullhead, not code 75,100. But RTR bullhead did not exist when I started and I knew nothing about building track and I might be a bit rubbish at it anyway. Given the many hours I have put into it I haven't the heart to rip it up and start again with bullhead. Overview Stabling point Center fuel point Yard Cheers Steve
  15. I will try and get a picture up in the next couple of weeks Kevin.
  16. 40012 In the yard. I have a Heljan 25 to weather next it will become 25190. An 08 to work on and I am working on getting an engineering train together. Cheers Steve
  17. For me the 80s were the last interesting railway decade. BREL, marshaling yards, a wide range of British built traction all serving an industrial base, all be it in decline. 40, 25s, 46s, 45s, disappeared then even the 33s and 50s began to be decimated. So by 1987-1988 it had become less interesting. By 1990-1991 I had lost interest completely. I can see why people were still interested in the 90s at least there were 37s and 47s trundling about but compared to what had been it was very boring. Apart from 60, 66, and 70 today I don't even know any of the class numbers are.
  18. My suggestion. A rebodied 21t coal hopper. Only thing out there at the moment is the Parkside kit, of which I have built a couple. I think it might sell well and compliment your other coal wagons well.
  19. Rebodied 21t mineral hopper. There are only Parkside kits available at the moment. Transfersea ferry wagons. The ones often used to import onions. Cheers Steve
  20. I was pretty pleased with the 20 Steve but I felt in parts it looked like it had been hauling aggregates not faded through sun exposure. So started this thread. I might try the oil brusher paints mentioned in the thread next. This is my faded 08 which I am pleased with. But its all a learning curve and would like to try new techniques. Also to add Steve, I am not convinced of the quality of the oil paint I was using.
