  1. I have to admit to being particularly blown away by the black 5. First class work. pretty much faultless, I'd say. Thanks for sharing and talking through the process.
  2. It's worth pointing out that not all their projects involve Rapido. The 35T tanker, for instances, does not. I'll say no more for fearing of speaking out of turn. I just thought it worth highlighting that it's not all (perceived or otherwise) skullduggery in the crowdfunding world.
  3. There is a lot of focus on the negative side of the crowdfunding concept. But there are success stories out there. Revolution Trains have successfully crowdfunded and delivered An N Gauge Pendolino, 100 Ton Bogie Tank wagons, and 35T 4 wheel tank wagons. The first and last are in the process of delivery, and by all accounts meet the original specification, if not exceed it. I believe the bogie wagon won an award as well. There are at least two modern wagons in the pipeline, and a Sturgeon bogie flat was announced as a proposal at Model Rail Scotland. The TEA atracted so much interest from oo modellers that it is soon to be available in that scale as well. I understand that each models finances are ring fenced so that they only fund that model. It seems to work and there is great confidence within the N gauge community that crowdfunding done well is a viable means of obtaining models that traditional manufacturers won't touch, for whatever reason. Crowdfunding can and does work.

  5. We can't really see what you are trying to show us in your picture. We see a servo and we see what looks like a laptop power supply and then dark rectangular thing with a couple of green LEDs and some wires. But that's really it..... Everything's is a bit dark..
  6. Having struggled over the last few days to make a batch of N Gauge DG Couplings, a combination of shaky hands and very poor near sightedness, means that the project has ended in abject disaster. I can manage to fold the main etch, but getting the latch to lock into the main fret (by bending the tabs) and bending and inserting the loop is beyond me. It's actually quite upsetting. Is there anyone on the forum who would be prepared to make some for me? Ultimately I could be looking for around a hundred, but initially fifty to begin with, although there is no great hurry for them. Anyone interested in a commission for making these, please reply by PM with a rough idea of how much you'd be looking for. Thanks for reading.
  7. Put me down as a plus one for completely unrealistic curves on the scenic section. Ditto tunnels immediately after a straight and then into said unrealistic curve (I need at least a coach length of straight track in the tunnel before the curve starts.) And, and,....(i know you said only one, but...) I model N and I cannot and will not own/run an old style locomotive/stock with pizza cutter wheels. Just not my bag.

  10. Alas, out of luck. By the time of my layout (62-64) they were all withdrawn, and by the time of withdrawal they seem to have been concentrated around the ER, with a handful at Darlington, so not even a sneaky long-lived survivor on borrowed time at Glasgow North. Sadly the V3s V1s were all gone by then as well, although the V3s hung on 'til 64 but the Scottish ones were gone by the end of 62. Possible to squeeze one in from Parkhead, but that would be acquiring an N class. One shall keep one's eyes peeled....

  16. Thanks for that, most informative. Is that like a "calling-on" arm in semaphore. I'm assuming this is one here, below the main signal, at Perth. R0038 66429 DRS Intermodal Perth Station DSC_5721 by ScottyStitch, on Flickr Would these then be used to send a DMU, for instance, from a platform towards the carriage shed loop? EDIT: The layout is N gauge so I am not sure if i am able to get working subsidiary signals/ground signals, but maybe non-working will suffice.

  18. Hi all, I'm wondering if some of you would be able to take a look at the attached AnyRail illustrations and tell me if my proposed signalling thoughts are on the right lines? The Layout is based in Glasgow and consists of a terminus station with a twin track mainline descending as through lines to the North of the platforms. The main line looping across the top of the plan is restricted to 40 mph running in both directions. The station approach and the through line will be restricted to 30 mph in both directions. The platform section should be obvious. To the left in lilac is a carriage shed, in red a DMU fuelling point and in purple further left, in the corner is a diesel fuelling and light-servicing point. I am suggesting that all semaphores have been ripped out and replaced by coloured light signals, controlled from a power box. Perth had this kind of treatment in the early 60s, so I think that's plausible. I have given each platform a starter signal. Should these be three or two aspect? The two lines into and out of the station are not bi-directional. Should the starters have some kind of route indicator on them? I'm guessing not. At the bottom of the descent into the subterranean tunnel of the through line I have placed a signal. About a quarter mile after entry into the subsurface, there is a junction. Should this signal be two or three aspect? I have placed a signal just before the scissors crossing on the arrival line, I am proposing a theatre style route indicator on top. Again what aspect should the signal be. I am assuming two. I have placed a similar signal on the loop from the carriage/diesel fuelling areas. Should this just be a ground signal? On the departure line I have placed a signal to protect the junction and a similar one on the carriage/diesel fueling areas. You'll have guessed by now I don't know how many aspects to use. I have also placed one on the corresponding through line. There is another signal on the arrival line, again protecting the junction. This one would need some form of route Identification. What would be more likely, A theatre box or a feather? I'm think theatre box to prepare the driver for the arrival platform as well as indicate the branch for the through line. Finally there is departure signal just before the obligatory/cliche'd tunnel. Would that be right or is it too close to the last signal, further back at the junction? I am assuming all other turnouts would be protected by ground signals. Would the carriage/fueling areas be power operated points/ground signals or would they use a ground frame? All help and advice would be gratefully received in this regard. It doesn't have to be 100% accurate, but I'd like it to be plausible at least. I hope I have explained things well enough..... In a kind-of-related-way, there is a growing campaign to reduce, or even stop, the use of cotton in garments, etc., due to the fact that it is (apparently) extremely water intensive to produce, not just in the field, but in the refining, spinning, etc., and involves the use of a disproportionate amount of pesticides and fertilisers.   22. A tip I learned from painting scale plastic kits (Hasegawa, Tamiya, Aifix, etc.) is to add just a drop (literally) or of red to your black mix. It makes the black less stark. Works a treat on aircraft radomes. The effects of scale, and all that..... Just a thought.
  23. Anthony, You have my sympathies regards the midges. We have plenty here in Scotland, particularly voracious on the west coast. Apologies, with regards the plaster issue, I misunderstood. I thought you meant coating the chicken wire with plaster directly. The method you describe from Siebwalde I think would work handsomely. I shall look forward to seeing your results when you are well enough to return. You are quite right to keep away in the meantime. Best Scotty

Agreed, it's the plaster that's the concern due to the amount you'd need to make the shell tough enough to support its own mass and bind to the chicken wire etc. Paper mache is a good shout, no messier than plaster bandage. I just find plaster bandage convenient, albeit at a cost admittedly. Neither of these should prove to be particularly brittle and will be much lighter, for the same overall effect.
  25. Hi Anthony I would agree with Simon. The wire and plaster might be a bit brittle if anything were to happen to it. I think the foam formers are a good idea, but I think if it were I, I'd probably go for the plaster impregnated cloth type product for the actual shell, but this would require some extra bracing of the formers, or more of them, perhaps. I suppose it depends on how often you envisage having to lift it up...?
