  1. I was going through the attic yesterday evening trying to throw stuff out, and reached the "Old LPs" strata, and found a wodge of my "youth". Activities suspended as I had a listen... Its nearly 42 years old?
  2. The Russians are allowing spectators at Sochi? A mass test for the PutinVaccine, perhaps.... Oh well, more Vroom, I wonder how much further Vettel will sink down the order?
  3. So prophetic - "Alexa...?" I always thought topless sunbathing in the middle of the North Sea was a bit odd... Then there was the "triangular" route, illustrated in the programme titles. Why? Don't North Sea ferries go to and fro? The BBC followed that with another "boaty" series, Howards Way. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howards'_Way
  4. Warship: Everyday tales of life on a Leander class frigate.... Very much a RN recruiting effort, and not afraid to explore topical themes. I recall one episode that involved an Icelandic Cod War patrol. Survivors was a pretty dark drama, that lost its way towards the end. However, it would be fairly topical today, involving a plague/whatever released from a laboratory in China and spread via airline passengers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivors_(1975_TV_series) Survivors was preceded by Doomwatch, an exploration of ecodoom, largely caused by the machinations of Big Companies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomwatch We had some good tv programmes in the early 70s, not like the tripe served up today!
  5. You'd have thought that they'd have realised that going "gummy" would have been safer...
  6. As large portions of the Nation go into "covid local lockdown", with possibly a complete national extension to come, I hope that the Parish isn't tempted to hibernate merely due to the Equinox... It's being so cheerful as keeps me going!
  7. Thats what happens in the Westworld!

    EBay madness

In Lot One? Its a Schrodingers Cat Auction, you collapse the probability matrix when you open the box...
  9. My mother used to listen to the North Wales police for hours, late at night when she couldn't get to sleep. She said it was mainly messages for "the sergeant" about his butties, and when it got to the really exciting bits, where they were chasing someone it went (as you say) all Foxtrot echo yankee schssschssssssbeep...
  10. I had to retire my fathers 25W soldering iron a few years ago, it got rampant woodworm in the handle.
  11. I was always told to keep away from fast women! Sadly they wouldn't keep away from me... On a completely different tack, While tidying the far recesses of the attic, I discovered an Altai MX190 digital multimeter that hadn't been used for yonks. Naturally, it didn't work, so after another search for a small x-head screwdriver, I opened it up and replaced the dead 9V battery that had been in it since I'd bought it. In December 1991. No corrosion, they don't make batteries like that anymore! This pales into insignificance, as I still have the Antex C-15W soldering iron and a pocket analogue multimeter that I was given for my 16th birthday. Both work perfectly and I'll be using the iron to solder a new 6.3MM output jack socket into my Jen SX1000 analogue synth when I get a new socket!
  12. And they're the ones who use at least 12 sheets a visit...
  13. Articles in Radio Constructor telling you how to make them! And before that, a series in the Radio Constructor detailing the construction of a Television receiver,* and ads from Laskeys Radio offering kits of parts, with and without valves and the all important tube... And later Quadrophonic broadcasts using two FM Stereo radio transmitters (in the early hours of the morning when the days broadcasting had shut down!) * Let it be understood that I didn't have access to these magazines when originally published, but came across them in Scout jumble sales some 14-18 years later, but even that is long ago enough... However I did listen to some of the quad experiments!
  14. What I like is that they're Heddlu. The most humourless police forces in the United Kingdom! (Though I'm worried about the one closest to "camera", it appears to be a lobster...)
  15. Its Signal Box, the entertainment thread. Fast is good! What grates is the entire espousal of the concept of "Loco unboxing!" Just watched the ES video. After the first unboxing/mad mouse Peckett dash, the two Childrens TV presenters drove me off. I appreciate that that is the target demographic for ES, but its not very enjoyable/interesting for those outside the demographic. Marketeers take note!
  16. A loco like that? I thought most of Webbs compounds were like that..... People DO get sidetracked. Normal service will be resumed. Just be glad we're not up to the Xmas Cracker season yet... And it was always gruntin' She tied it to a five-bar gate And XXXXXX XXX XXXXXX XXXX XX! (I know its after the watershed, but there's always catch-up and repeats to consider...) The best version is: Mary had a little lamb, With roast potatoes, peas and mint sauce!
  17. As the article says, there have been a number of attempts to access the data on the disks, and working snapshots have been created that don't rely on an actual Laserdisk/player/BBC Micro/software solution. The community disk is a particular decoding minefield for other solutions. Its good to see that The Centre For Computing History has a working original system. I was mainly thinking of the deterioration of disks that had been kept in less than archival conditions and the rarity of working laserdisk players, BBC micros and the support software to display the disk content. The other problem area, apart from the hardware/spftware chain is that of copyright. Again, as the article says: I expect the major US copyright drivers will push that date further into the long grass...
  18. Bunch of selfish b@st@rds! Good luck!
  19. That or thingummybob, you know, her/him who lived opposite auntie al........ Those look rather over-engineered for a battlefield, and the stakes in the foreground are of NO USE AT ALL for stopping kniggets on 'orseback!, They'd barely tickle their fetlocks!!!
  20. I'm surprised they've not unlinked the whole thing from the interweb so that people can forget about "how it used to be done" and replaced it with a static page promising "New! Dynamic! Content! Coming Soon!", and something will eventually turn up, in a similar style to that Signal Box thingy*, fronted by a dynamically hand-flapping Taylor with big white teeth and a gaspy voice. Other stereotypes are available....... * Eventually the two will be rationalised into "The Engine Box"...
  21. A cautionary note, the Exchequer Records were kept on tally sticks and look what happened to them... (And the Palace of Westminster, for that matter!)
  22. It can't, we're not allowed pantomimes this year (and probably next year too...)
  23. Another quirk of the engine shed is that the doors are short to clear Dublo 3 rail track and possibly Triang grey-based track too. Over modern track, they look more like a fashion statement...
