  1. Its Welsh, all distances are approximate. ( Two surveyors measured the distance, one thought it was one mile, the other decided on four. The local council compromised on two...)
  2. In our school we backed books with brown paper (The arty types used other sorts of paper) when the book was issued at the beginning of the year, because if it was returned in a significantly worse state then house points were deducted. A well wrapped book was proof of good intent. Thr return day was like the intro sequence of "Branded" (remember that?) as the teacher inspected the book, passed or failed it and then ceremonially removed the backing, ready for next years victim...
  3. I shouldn't be in too much of a hurry. As you might comment on a poor ebay "win", they're not as described at the present... As for Wartime Black, its good for not showing the dirt!
  4. I got R3711 Princess Marie Louise and R3682 Duchess of Gloucester because I liked the BR Blue livery on them. When I get around to it, I'll pop a TTS decoder in them too...
  5. Finally get off to sleep, and wake up with smuts in your eyes...
  6. Didn't the line to the first terminus at York punch though the city walls too?
  7. For a race heralded as a celebration of the 1000th F1 GP for Ferrari, its sad that it'll be remembered for all the wrong reasons. However Ferrari should feel relieved that both their cars finished in the points, even if they shared 5 points between the two!
  8. Words fail me. I hope there's full coverage of the shambles on the C4 highlights! I also hope that once things are cleared up, there WILL be some good racing...
  9. It does indeed. One of my big wind-ups came from my great aunts, who preferred vocal duos of the 20s and 30s, whilst my maternal grandmother liked popular light music , thats where the other biggun came from. I myself bought an HMV Table Grand gramophone from a charity shop for peanuts and a Columbia portable from a curio shop on Steep Hill, Lincoln. That one had a handful of George Formby "gems" with it, and we sailed off down the Fossdyke towards Torksey with it blasting away on the boats roof like latter-day Hullabaloos..... Don't talk about things getting heavier...
  10. On the other hand, from FP1 to Q3, Hamilton made performance gains in each session as he worked his way into understanding the track. I see Verstappen actually hired a car to run on the track a few weeks ago so he could get a hands on feel for its character. I feel that must have helped him to P3. Having watched the Qualifying highlights on C4 yesterday, I was impressed by the resemblance of Mugello to a roller-coaster ride, with all its dips, rises and sharp corners!
  11. Oh why did you mention 78s? Ok, I've got my dads 30s jazz record collection, but I've also got records I picked up myself, and I've 4 working wind-up gramophones. I won't go into further detail...
  12. In the current climate, there are too many bored people trying to find things to occupy themselves with. Where ebay is concerned, there may be a vague desire to have the object being bid on, but what takes over is an emotional urge to compete with other bidders and BEAT them, the endorphins kick in and adrenaline washes through the system. They lose all sense of proportion and control. Come the dawn and they realise they've made a fool of themselves again... I'm sure I'm preaching to the converted, but I ALWAYS set a maximum for what I'm prepared to pay for something, ignoring all the L@@K, MINT! and RARE! blandishments of the shysters* selling the stuff. Sometimes I test the waters at the beginning with a low bid, if things don't seem to be moving, then towards the end, I'll bid in large increments towards my limit. Once its past that, I'll walk away. * There are honest vendors too, but they rarely use L@@K, MINT! and RARE!
  13. Its just a spot of payback, Stephenson took the Chester and Holyhead Railway through the North-West corner of the Chester City walls. There should be a big Roman wall where the girders and sandstone walling above the train are... And where the photographer is standing, is a similar bit of archaeological destruction.
  14. 7 years on and still "fighting" doesn't sound good. He's fortunate to have the ability to fund his care, and I wish him and his family all the best.
  15. Hmmmmm... Is he an ebayer?
  16. It was the second real Gerry Anderson puppet series, preceded by Torchy The Battery Boy, followed by Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlett... They don't make children's TV like they used to! I forgot Twizzle, which was before Torchy, but that one was before my time... To be honest, I don't really remember watching Torchy either, but I did have a Torchy annual. I recall bits of Four Feather Falls, but Supercar was the first I really remember.
  17. I got Gilwell Park when Hattons were flogging it for 74 quid a while ago, but 69 quid for even a Railroad 4-6-0 isn't that bad!
  18. An "interesting" qualifying, with the first three within a gnats whisker of each other, Vettel at least getting into Q2 (though not doing much thereafter), Leclerc getting a creditable P5, considering the form over the past few races, and Perez pipping Stroll to P6. A bit of a raised finger to Daddy Stroll? I've heard it said that it looks like it'll be a tricky track for overtaking, so will it be a bit of a Monaco tomorrow with qualifying position and stratigic pitting being the key to success? Talking of racing liveries, the 1950s Maseratis were a strong red and closer to the current Ferrari livery than the original maroon-verging-on-plum colour that Ferrari wore and are wearing for this race.
  19. IN the above pic of the Crampton footplate, Ms Corporate looks distinctly miffed, as if she had been booked 1st Class, facing the engine and the porter had directed her here, and scruffy oiks in hi-vis are definitely not her thing... Her PA is not going to like it once Ms Corporate gets back to the office!
  20. HoHum.... Lets see how fast the all go after FP3....
  21. The loco split from the set is also being flogged off for £69: https://www.hattons.co.uk/540464/hornby_r1214loco_class_b17_4_6_0_61672_west_ham_united_in_br_green_with_early_emblem_railroad_ra/stockdetail.aspx Which is ok if you actually want a Railroad B17 in BR Green with a Unicycling Lion. I suppose there must be some West Ham fans about.
  22. Forgot to mention the Pi, I've got one of the first 2000*, getting it was just as nerveracking as the recent imbroglio over the Hornby "Captain Tom" class 66.... * Followed the Pi development since the first sniff on "Click". My latest one is a 4Gb Pi 4.
  23. No doubt for an S100 rack system? My personal computer history goes something like this; SoC Mk14, ZX81, Commodore 64, Amstrad PC1512DDMM with expanded memory (to 640Kb!) and a 20Mb hard disk on a card. I then went onto larger/faster PC compatible clones. I did do a sidetrack onto one of those little white Apple Mac square things, but all it convinced me to do was to steer clear of Appledom for ever after! All I can say is that modern computers are easier to use, but few people try programming on them and they aren't as interesting as our old computers!
