    EBay madness

I thought Happy Knight looked as if it had been left out in the sun and had run a bit, then I saw Brown Jack... Perhaps they had been put in an oven to encourage the paint to dry? On the other hand, the vendor of Brown Jack is offering a single-buffered Triang Hornby 08 shunter for an almost reasonable £11.69 when you factor in postage... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tri-ang-Hornby-OO-Gauge-R152-class-8-shunter/174403477539?hash=item289b41e023:g:ms0AAOSwZo5fO84W
  2. Or just chant "I think I can, I think I can" uphill and "I knew I could, I knew I could" downhill! How about a resonator in the tender with some sandpaper on a piece of sprung bronze, catching an eccentric mounted on an axle? Simple enough...
  3. Depends on when in the Middle Ages it might have been, the earlier you go, the more French the upper classes were, and they'd eat anything! Perhaps the singer was out of his mind on the ergot contaminated rye in his pocket?
  4. Well...... The Quad/Garrard/SME setup sounds wonderful, Obviously such equipment would probably require at least a 7.5" gauge layout with a rotary convertor to power it all. It would probably be better suited to an under-board position replaying recorded ambient sounds from a Ferrograph tape deck, say a Series 5... If you wanted a nice little valve amplifier, capable of playing hardware generated white noise "steam effects", then it would be possible to do it with the wired stem valves used in early compact hearing aids, possibly with the sort of vibrator power pack that was used in valve car radios. It wouldn't fit anything below O gauge, and then you'd have to fit the amp/noise generator/power pack in one coach and batteries in another. The electronics coach had better be metal bodied to dissipate the heat... Completely out of gauge on anything below 1:12 scale! This, however, might not be unreasonable?
  5. But they'll all be cooked, like the blackbirds, so they'll just be additional protein. Anyway, I never could work out how baked blackbirds could sing.
  6. They can't spell either, unless they're feeling devilish about their notice...
  7. I was going to mention that... Its in the big O! Pity that they demolished New Brighton Pier too. (I believe the row of buildings to the right was the "Ham and Egg Parade") Just think, nothing in that photo has survived to today... I like the Nobby in the foreground.
  8. It seems that they have a Reacher Gilt clone in charge already, the US really does need someone of Moist von Lipwig's calibre.... 2 manufacturers - the Pi lot and the Sprog lot who not only have designed and manufactured the add-on board but also set up the OS, ect. You still would need to get a decent PSU for the Pi, a PSU for the Sprog board and probably the case for the assembly. (Say about another £30). So £160, but still almost reasonable! I'm just about to dump two Dyson uprights which are more trouble than they're worth. I've also got a couple of the handhelds, that look like 50s Ray Guns. The charger for one has died, luckily I have the others charger otherwise they would be ditched too! I wonder how many of their washing machines are still functional???
  9. If you have a collection of elderly laptops (Win 7+) then you can repurpose one of those to go with a Sprog 3 and an old wireless router so it doesn't have to go anywhere near a live Internet! I've done both the old laptop and Pi routes and both have strengths and weaknesses. It depends on what you have to hand. The Pi-Sprog-3-system looks neat.
  10. Yes indeedy! AKA The Dockers Umbrella. It claimed to be the first Electric Overhead Railway in the World! Wilfully dismantled in 1956
  11. You've got to take this one off my hands, I've just seen a newer, shinier one... Set up a simple DCC layout, say a shunting plank with a Hornby J50 and a few wagons and a suitable "cheap" DCC base station and WiFi adaptor*, install Engine Driver on the "unwanted" phone and you're away.... You can then safely use your current phone for its usual duties! * I said "cheap" then I looked up the cheapest setup I know. Eeek! Mind you, its no more expensive, or even LESS expensive, than a bells'n'whistles shiny new phone...
  12. I'm just stating initial conditions... Sure there's an Actress/Bishop joke there somewhere...
  13. I've been content with bog-standard android devices ever since I got an allegedly "smart" phone. The only reason I've ever got a new one is when they suddenly stop working or when the version of android is so old that it won't install software! Good luck for your sons results, I hope they're up to expectations.
  14. Nahhhhhh..... Thats only the EM response. P4, on the other hand...
  15. Whatever do you mean??? Nudge nudge, wink wink. Reinstall your dodgy fuel system for this race, we'll look the other way. This race only, mind!
  16. I've a couple of Airfix/Dapol Rocket kits and when this Covid thing kicked off, I was going to try making a "Northumbrian" from one too. Its still on the Project List and may be there a little longer! As I've got the general release Rocket pack, and a couple of the open coaches on preorder, It would look nice as a little "Opening Day" diorama, though not with Mr Huskisson being run down... You get the feeling that certain reaches of the NRM are staffed by people trying to make a name for themselves, prepared to make a leap for pastures new before their areas of "responsibility" go belly up! Of course, they're rather economical with the actualitie, when they only had City of Truro, it was always "the first loco to make the ton". As soon as they got their hands on the Flying Money Pit, they changed their tune... Or numberplates for that matter! I believe part of the fun of running ex-GWR locos on Heritage railways is trying to find as many different loco numbers as possible on the different parts when they're being overhauled. GWR interchangability and standardisation was a wonderful thing!
  17. You could have cut down on the number of pieces for your bin if you'd pinched one off the Council.... About 20 minutes work with a bit of plasticard... The workshops, the PW shed and the trolley look good too, better get gates on the compound, or those sleepers will "walk" for alternative uses! (I've kicked the Ofqual marking machine and its given you an A* in CDT!!!)
  18. Hiccups again? Try standing upside down, drinking a glass of water with a bunch of cold keys down your neck!
  19. Its the traffic lights, its been proven that cyclists ignore them, so its an attempt to divert them by other means!

Realistic, compared to what? something with a face on it?
  21. Will Vettel get to keep his company car?
  22. It would have to be one of those Iain Rice style Cameo Layouts, precisely modelled to the n'th degree. Ideal for P4 work too, plain track with a single point. But dull in an operational sense, a Terrier and a couple of coaches once in a while, and a Down pickup goods in the morning with the corresponding Up service in the afternoon. You could enhance it with some ambient sound...
