  1. Good evening, everyone. This evening, we have another four photo’s courtesy of ricsrailpics, Syd Young, and trainsofhull, all on Flickr. The first one is a shot of Class B1, 61087 on a Bridlington to Doncaster return excursion composed of Stanier corridor stock, on the 1st August, 1963. Next is a photo’ of WD, 90378, shunting in Bridlington yard, on the 31st December, 1964. The third photo’ shows 20078, 20032 and 20055 as they catch some late evening sunlight through the poplar trees at Botanic Gardens on the 8th May, 1980. Finally, here’s a photo’ of 60040 as it works trsin, 6J94, from Hedon Road to Rotherham ST, through Hessle, on the 4th October, 2018. Best regards, Rob.
  2. Good evening, David. That’s a great set of photo’s of Grantham from over the years. C1465, of a Class 47, on a down freightliner train, in January, 1974, is a most atmospheric shot, with the gloomy conditions around the fairly bright lightbulb visible in the fourcharacter headcode box. White paint, from the platform edge can be seen to have dribbled down in a way which might be replicated on some models. The photo’s of Cambridge, in black and white, from around 1947/8, are a superb selection. JVol1425, of B2, 61671, Royal Sovereign, and B2, 61617, Ford Castle, in 1947, is a gem, and taken from a high vantage point which makes things look a bit like a model railway. With warmest regards, Rob.
  3. Good evening, everyone. Firstly, many thanks, Mick, for the better copy of the photo’ of H&BR number 38. This evening we have another four photo’s to enjoy. They are courtesy of Ado Griff, Robert Gadsdon, Chris, and John Turner, all on Flickr. The first one is a view of 03174 at Scarborough loco stabling point, in the summer of 1975. The caption states that it was a bit strange, since it was based at Healey Mills at the time. The second photo’ is a sad view of seven Ex-NER LNER B16s at Hull Dairycoates loco shed, on a sunny day in August 1964, with B16/3 61463 nearest the camera. This loco had been withdrawn in June 1964, and was scrapped in September. Thirdly, we have a photo’ of Scarborough on the 29th July, 1981, with a line up of locomotives of classes 03, 08, 31, 40 and 45’s. It will never be like that again… The last one is a view of WD, 90677, at Dairycoates, on the 25th February, 1967. And it does appear that the tender is right up against something - uneven track? Best regards, Rob.
  4. Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s of the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, at Haverthwaite, with photos from 1973 and 1975. The last photo’ of Fairburn 4MTT, masquerading as CR 2085, in August, 1975, actually looks good in the Caledonian blue livery. The photo’s at Skipton on the 17th March, 1968, are a superb selection, and form an excellent record of how things were on BR in those sad, final months of steam on BR. J1231, of Class 5s 45447 and 45110, on special No2, from Stockport to Carnforth, in March, 1968, is a truly splendid photograph of not only the train, but the bullhead track in the foreground on the softwood sleepers. A ‘proper railway’. With warmest regards, Rob.
  5. Good evening, everyone. Firstly, thank you, Mick, for the detailed information about the C12 photo’. That is really helpful. And thank you, Nigel, and Davexoc, for finding information about the RES 47 hauled train at Scarborough. It does indeed look like the 47 is 47757, Restitution. This last evening of Wintertime we have four more photo’s to enjoy. They are courtesy of Murray Liston, John Law, Ernie’s Railway Archive and Andy Mason, all on Flickr. The first one is a view of class J25, 65671, at Malton shed in the 1950’s. Next we have a photo’ of H&BRwy, Beyer-Peacock, 2-4-0, 38, on Springhead shed in pre grouping days. THe third photo’ is a view of the Derwent Valley Light Railway, with ex-BR Class 04 (D2298) at Layerthorpe on the 15th July, 1979. The final photo’ shows a view of 20010 +20215, at Scarborough, on the 12th May, 1990, on the Vladivostock Avoider. Here’s a link to the full details on Six Bells: http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/90s/900512ct.htm Best regards, Rob.
  6. Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s of Switzerland at Pfäffikon, in 1988, and 1990. C15003, of Ae4/7, 11022, on a parcels train, on the 9th August, 1990, being a particularly superb shot of the locomotive. The mixed bag of photo’s, all beginning with W, are a superb set. The last photo’ at Wellingborough, of 45106, on a down express, on the 9th August, 1977, is a well composed photo’ of the Peak as it leans to the left in the station on the canted track. With warmest regards, Rob.
  7. Good evening, everyone. Firstly, thank you, Mick, for the excellent photo’ of 461, at Springhead. And thank you, Mike, for the story behind the photo’ of MN, 35018, British India Line on the Scarborough Spa Express at Scarborough on the 5th August, 2021. I am not sure but in the supplied caption it states the C12 is on an ex-South Howden to Hull service so that could be near Springhead Halt. Now, this evening, we have a further four photo’s to enjoy courtesy of Andy Mason, John Turner, RobT653, and Robert Gadsdon, all on Flickr. The first one is a view of BR English Electric Class 40, 40075, on the newly-installed turntable just outside Scarborough station, sometime in 1981. Next we have a photo’ of D2158, on hire to the Derwent Valley Light Railway. So, York shed's Class 03 0-6-0DM shunter D2158 passes Osbaldwick with a down DVLR pick-up freight, on the 15th April, 1964. The third photo’ is a study of 117306, which has clearly just been outshopped in Regional Railways livery, as seen at Bridlington South on the 24th August, 1991. It's a long haul for a DMU though, this was the 12:56 (SO) Scarborough to Leicester service, a Summer Saturday dated working for holiday traffic. Finally, here’s a photo’ of RES 47776 departing Scarborough, on a special train of which I am, sadly, unable to read the headboard, so cannot get the details from Six Bells Junction. Best regards, Rob.
  8. Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of Scottish photo’s. The first photo’ at Eastfield, of 37026, on the 2nd March, 1984, is a superb portrait shot of the 37. The photo’s from around Pelaw Junction are a splendid set. The first photo’ of 47218, on an up oil train, on the 1st August, 1985, is a excellent shot of the 47, which is nicely weathered. With warmest regards, Rob.
  9. Good evening, everyone. This evening, thanks to knoxrj, and Andy Mason, both on Flickr, we have a further four photo’s to enjoy seeing. The first one is a view of class J74, 461, at Hull Springhead, sometime in the 1930’s. The second photo’ shows a most interesting short train. A class C12, 4542, is hauling the 13.55 (SO) ex-South Howden, on the 21st April, 1934. The formation is an ex-NER 6 wheel passenger brake van, and a non corridor, 49’, eight compartment all third. Presumably first class was not required on this service - a steam railcar substitution? Thirdly, we have a photo’ of 47592, hauling a railtour called The Manchester Executive Pullman, at Seamer West Junction, heading away on the York line. No date given, but is possibly the 1980’s. Finally, here’s a photo’ of 45107+45007, on the `45 finale`, date being the 3rd October, 1987. The headcode was almost certainly 1Z46. Best regards, Rob.
  10. Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s, with two at Monkton Cokeworks, Gateshead and three at Middlesbrough. The first photo’ at Monkton Cokeworks, with 08888 and NCB 03099, on the 15th August, 1985, being a particularly interesting photo’, with lots of detail for the modeller. The photo’s at Swayfield, on Stoke Bank, in 1970 and 1972, are a superb selection. C0994, of a Class 47, on the down 18.30 Kings Cross to Hull service, in July, 1972, is a most nostalgic shot and the special coating on the cab windows can be clearly seen. With warmest regards, Rob.
  11. Good evening, everyone. This evening, we have a set of four photo’s thanks to John Turner, Richard, and Andy Hughes, all on Flickr. The first one is a view of Trainload liveried (unbranded) 0-6-0DE 08499 manoeuvres MGR hopper wagons whilst they are loaded with imported coal by an unidentifiable Caterpillar 980C Wheel Loader at King Geroge Dock, Hull, in c1991. Next we have a photo’ of Riddles WD "Austerity" 2-8-0s (with 90704 to the right of the image) near the coaling stage at Dairycoates (50B) MPD, in c1966. The third photo’ shows D49/2 62763 'The Fitzwiliam' at Hull Dairycoates. No date given, but certainly the 1950’s. Finally, here’s a photo’ of 66419, as it does it's bit for the enviroment as it passes Hull Anlaby Road Junction working the 09:30 Hull - Doncaster route/refresher working, on the 7th April, 2022. Best regards, Rob.
  12. Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s from the 1970’s at Loughborough Central. J4167, of Hunslet Robert Nelson No 4, on an empty coaching stock movement, in March, 1975, is a superb photo’ by your Dad. The photo’s from 1976 and 1977 at Stenson Junction, taken from the bridge by the power station sidings, are a most excellent set. The first photo’ of 47, 47343, on a down freight train, in August, 1976, is a splendid composition by your Dad, and I can only make an educated guess as to why the cab door is open. It was that long, hot summer, and since the driver can be seen driving, the door must be open for some extra ventilation. With warmest regards, Rob.
  13. Good evening, everyone. Firstly, thank you, Mick, for straightening up 2524, and the plan of part of Springhead shed. This evening we another four photo’s to enjoy seeing, thanks to Jamerail, RobT653, John Law and Ernies Railway Archive, all on Flickr. The first one is a view of 40034, as it sits under the station roof at Scarborough, platform 4, on the 10th September, 1983. Secondly, we have a photo’ of a class 108 and a class 101 DMU as it makes a smoky exit from Scarborough with a Hull service on 2nd August, 1986. “Unfortunately,” the photographer in the caption reads, “I have not recorded the details of the service.” In the station is a Class 110 "Calder Valley" DMU and 45146, which was to form the 12:20 Scarborough to Leicester (SO) service. The third photo’ shows H&BRwy, 0-6-0T, 3, at Springhead shed, in pre grouping days. Finally, we have a photo’ of Malton shef, on the 16th June, 1962, with class J27, 65844. Also a J39 is part visible alongside, and an LMS 2-6-4T. Best regards, Rob.
  14. Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s of the ex-British Steel site at Sewstern beyond the High Dyke branch during the preservation period. J3173, of Peckett, 1158, in April, 1973, with a ballast train being shunted, composed of BR wagons, being a beautiful photo’ of the tank engine at work. The black and white photo’s from around Nottingham are all gems and JVol5137, at Nottingham London Road Low Level, with class A5, 69817, on a down goods train, in c1953, is a most atmospheric and well composed photo’ by your Dad. With warmest regards, Rob.
  15. Good evening, everyone. This evening, we have four photo’s to enjoy, thanks to Mike Hutton, John Turner, Peter Brumby, Grahama5531, and Andy Mason, all on Flickr. The first one is a view of class B16/1, 61429, on what appears to be carriage stock being backed into a carriage siding just to the south of Scarborough station, in possibly the late 1950’s. The second photo’ shows a third and final view of Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 46409, pictured working the "RCTS/SLS North Eastern Tour 1963" through Dunnington Halt on the Derwent Valley Light Railway and heading towards Dunnington station and Selby, on the 27th September, 1963. Thirdly, we have a photo’ of the 10.12 Leeds - Hull, as it passes Gilberdyke Junction, formed of a typical four car hybrid formation of class 123/124 DMU cars, on the 14th February, 1981. The last photo’ is a view of 47580, County of Norfolk, on a Scarborough to Carnforth ecs, on the 8th April, 2012. Best regards, Rob.
  16. Good evening, David. That’s a great set of photo’s from Scotland. The first one at Port Glasgow, of the Gouroch branch, in July, 1974, is a most interesting photo’, and I feel a bit puzzled by what appears to be a boy helping out with the roadworks. I hope I have got that right. The photo’s from around Scout Green and Shap Wells in 1973 and 1976, are of much interest. The last photo’ at Shap Wells, with a Class 87, on an up express train, in August, 1976, is a fantastic shot, and, with the exquisite Mkll’s from Accurascale in mind, the carriages look to be Mkllc’s if those are Roevac roof vents. With warmest regards, Rob.
  17. Good evening, everyone. Firstly, thank you, Mike, for those excellent, atmospheric and enjoyable posts about signalling, your lovely layout, and the first green locomotive. You are quite right, that unnamed Patriot is hauling a mixture of ex-LMS Pll and Plll carriages. Now, this evening, from myself here are four more photo’s which are courtesy of West Halton Sidings, Andy Mason, knoxrj, and mikeyashworth, all on Flickr. The first one is quite different, and is an advertisement for Sentinel shunters: Stick to steam and save money : advert issued by Sentinel Waggon Works, 1929 - Derwent Valley Light Railway, York (Layerthorpe) station. Next we have a photo’ of class J75, 2524, at Hull Springhead, in the 1930’s. Apologies about the ‘lean’, I can only think that the photographer didn’t quite have things setup properly. The third photo’ shows Deltic, 55011, as it departs Platform 2 at Scarborough with the Saturday service to Kings Cross. No date given, but it may be 1980. Finally, this is a photo’ of the time of the first Covid lockdown, and shows one of the results of it. “An unusual working, normally the weedkiller round East Yorkshire is an MPV on its own. However on Sunday 3rd May, 2020, it was top and tailed by 66137 and 66199 - this is to allow the operator of the weedkilling equipment to sit separately from the driver and maintain social distancing.” Best regards, Rob.
  18. Good evening, David. That’s a great set of photo’s of Carlisle. C9420, of 85020, on a down empty steel train, on the 12th April, 1988, is a well composed photo’, and there appears to be a light out in what was the headcode box. The Laindon photo’s, on on the London Tilbury and Southend line, are of great interest. The last photo’ of 302243, on a Fenchurch St to Shoeburyness working, in May, 1979, is a superb shot of the train going about it’s everyday work without any fanfare. With warmest regards, Rob.
  19. Good evening, everyone. Firstly, thank you, Mick, for the excellent photo’ of a G5 hauled - despite being push and pull fitted - train for Hull at Willerby, in 1955. It is just so full of detail and atmosphere. And thank you, too, for those better photo’s of those two H&BR locomotives. This evening, courtesy of Andy Mason, knoxrj, John Turner, and Paul Ashton, all on Flickr, we have four photo’s to enjoy. The first photo’ shows NER, 2-4-0, 1268, at Bridlington in pre grouping days. Next we have a photo’ of Derby built (1960) 350hb 0-6-0DE D3944, as it shunts Shirebrook (Eastern Region) Cowans Sheldon & Co Ltd 30T Steam Breakdown Crane DE331160 with matchtruck DM770006 at Dairycoates (50B) MPD, Hull, in c1969. The third photo’ is a view of 37421, propelling coaching stock into platform 1 at Scarborough, to form a train to either Manchester or Liverpool, in the 1980’s. I’m a bit vague about the details unfortunately. Finally, here’s a present day photo’ of 66728 "Institution of Railway Operators" at Gilberdyke, on train, 6D25, the 0850 Rylstone Tilcon (Gbrf) to Hull Dairycoates Tlcn Gbrf, on Tuesday the 19th March, 2024. Best regards, Rob.
  20. Good evening, David. That’s a great set of photo’s of Switzerland again this at Emmenbrücke just north of Luzern, on the 3rd August, 1988. C10076, of Ee3/3, 16410, is a most delightful portrait shot of the locomotive. The photo’s at Ardwick in Manchester, from January, 1972, are a superb selection, and, as stated, show a typical day with that dull and cold weather. C0785, of Class 506, M59601, on a Manchester Piccadilly to Hadfield service, is a great photo’, and the cab front of the EMU is just so stark, adding to the gloomy conditions. With warmest regards, Rob.
  21. Good evening, everyone. Firstly, thank you, Mike, for those couple of excellent photo’s of the Avro Vulcan XH558. It’s fascinating to see those photo’s of the plane that the 37 was named after. Now this evening, we have four photo’s thanks to Andy Mason, John Law, and trainsofhull, all on Flickr. The first one is a view of H&BRwy, 2-4-0, 33, at Springhead shed in pre grouping days. The second photo’ shows a further H&BRwy locomotive, this one being a Kirtley, 0-6-0T, 4, again at Springhead shed in pre grouping days. Thirdly, we have an undated photo’ of 45140, as it passes the junction at Seamer West with a nice rake of Dogfish on the line to York. Finally, here’s a photo’ of 20205, passing under the overall roof at Beverley on train, 3S15, Bridlington to York Thrall, on the 15th October, 2018. Best regards, Rob.
  22. Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s of railways without trains in North Wales on the Cambrian and LNWR line to Blaenau Ffestiniog. The last photo’ at Roman Bridge, on the 23rd July, 2002, is a most enchanting, scenic view. The photo’s from trips to Scotland in 1973 and 1974, taken at Craigendoran, are a superb selection. J3333, of Class 303 043, on a Helensburgh to Airdrie service, in August, 1973, is a delightful and well composed shot of a Blue Train before the cabs were disfigured with the vandal proof replacement outer cab windows. With warmest regards, Rob.
  23. Good evening, everyone. Firstly I think that normal service is resumed after the mixup I had yesterday evening. And I want to especially thank you, Mike, for that truly outstanding post about your first visit to Dairycoates shed. The words and photo’s are quite excellent, and I have really enjoyed reading it all. So, please do make that post about your first green engine day, I cannot wait to see what happened. So, it’s photo’ time, courtesy of Peter Foster, Trevor Casey, Charlie Verrall, and Andy Hughes, all on Flickr. The first one is a view of V2, 60831, of 50B Hull Dairycoates, presumably waiting to end its days in Drapers Yard, on the 29th March, 1967. Next we have a photo’ of class 37, D6736, at Dairycoates, on the 21st May, 1967. The third photo’ shows class V3, 67638, at Dairycoates, on the 22nd April, 1961. Finally, here’s a photo’ of 37424 (37558) 'Avro Vulcan XH558' arrives at its destination in charge of UK Railtours 'Beverley at Christmas' charter, train, 1Z64, the 08:15 London Kings Cross - Beverley, on the 21st December, 2019. Best regards, Rob.
  24. Good evening, David, and everyone else. Firstly I want to thank you all for your support and help, and your supportive pm, David. It is very much appreciated after yesterday evening’s mixup. I still don’t know exactly what I did. I have decided to leave that errant post as a reminder so, hopefully, I will not have anymore mixups. So, with permission, I think I will post my comments to yesterday’s photo’s, and then follow them up with the comments on today’s photo’s. So, from yesterday, that’s a great selection of photo’s of the Midland at Kegworth. The first photo’ of a Class 44 on an up coal train, in January, 1970, is an excellent head on shot of the locomotive, and it can be seen that the discs only have very faint lights, not the bright lights to be found on some RTR models. The photo’s at Otterington, on the ECML, are a superb set. J494, of WD, 90011, on a down iron ore train, in May, 1966, is a most excellent photo’, and how well weathered the WD is. And now for today’s excellent photo’s, the Sittingbourne and Kemsley as preserved in 1975 and 1979 photo’s are a delightful set. C2095, Bagnall, Superb, running round, in May, 1975, is a lovely portrait shot of the locomotive. The photo’s at Kirkby Stephen on the Settle and Carlisle, in the 1990’s are a superb selection. C21772, of 142093 and 156471, on a Leeds to Carlisle service, on the 10th April, 1997, is a well composed shot of the train. It also reminds me of a story where a friend, at that time, was travelling over the line regularly, and one day an old couple asked him about the train. He strongly advised them not to travel in the Pacer, but in the 156. They did so, and enjoyed the journey. With warmest regards, Rob.
  25. Good evening, everyone. I can only apologise for posting the photos which were meant for my East Yorkshire thread in this thread. I don’t know how it happened. It will be forever a mystery. Or just old age catching up with me. Sorry, Rob. P.S. The photo’s are now to be found in my thread.
