  1. For a few years now I have been using budgeting software to balance income and expenditure. Recently the modelling budget has dropped to zero, other outgoings have to be met so it’s one category which is not essential. Of course I do have plenty of stuff in stock to keep me busy but for now fresh expenditure has been halted.
  2. The was a copy of Model Railway journal some time ago which devoted 13 pages to an article about car number plates, which is the reason I gave up on the magazine at the time. If anyone could locate it it might possibly be of some help, I think it may be somewhere around issue 120
  3. Well I don’t have a BEV but I think my next car will be one. However I am stunned by the thought of only 50% battery capacity being available. For the price they are I will be looking to use 100% battery capacity and it will be charged and discharged to suit me, not the maker. Therefore I will be giving VW a swerve, I am rather interested in the forthcoming BMW iX1 anyway which will hopefully have a less needy battery.
  4. Penderyn is my favourite, in fact I only ever drink their whiskys these days, I really like the mellow tastes. They have also opened a distillery in Llandudno, which is handy as I am in the process of moving to North Wales. I have also been to the Aber Falls distillery at Abergwyngregyn, a bit further up the coast . I’m not as impressed with their current output ( a bit bland) but maybe it will improve with time, however their Orange marmalade gin is very tasty.
  5. I have got to say whoever weathered that GUV has gone way over the top, a real mess, and they forgot to weather the tail lamp.😁
  6. I did see a biomass train passing through Northwich a couple of weeks ago. Several wagons were in the old swoosh livery which was was very faded and shabby so I suppose it’s time to smartened the train up a bit with new vinyls.
  7. There are a couple of you tube videos ( one 10 mins long) and several Batty Moor references in line if you Google it.
  8. As above its 2.5 (mm) divided by 4 (mm) which is 0.625 or 62.5 percent on a calculator, scratch builders may prefer long division using pen and paper.
  9. They wrote a song about their favourite meal, chippy tea time.
  10. I believe the OP is referring to the side of the chair which is not shaped to accept the foot web of the rail ( sorry is the terminology is a bit off) . Looking at Martin’s drawing it is clear what is needed and it is very generous to offer the printer files for free.
  11. I’ve followed most of this thread with interest and have to say that censorship was not something I’ve considered before. When building layouts I generally have very little in the way of signage and wouldn’t consider adding something just to make a point or be controversial. I do dislike graffiti and would not put it on a model no matter how authentic that may make it. However Alexei Sayle writes in his autobiography about an intriguing message daubed on the approach to Liverpool Lime Street which politely translates as “go away all cockneys”. He claims it lasted for years, occasionally being given a fresh coat of paint by maintenance staff, somehow I cannot see John Holden adding that to his layout.

    On Cats

A sad time but nice to know that she passed peacefully.
  13. In a moment of weakness a bloke entered his credit card details into to Babe TV channel Moments later a girl appeared on the screen and asked what she could do for him ”Can you hide ?” He replied “I can hear my wife coming down stairs and I’ve lost the remote”
  14. There is an allotment in the final scene of the “Oh no it’s Selwyn Froggitt” episode “The master builder”. As the titles roll the camera pans round to show a line behind the allotment leading to colliery sidings. Several 16 mineral wagons are in evidence. Filmed in 1976 it seems like another world, which I suppose it was.
  15. Fittons were a cake shop which was famed for its pies so it could be the same place. They had a shop on Chester Road and some other shops in the town so they may have had a shop on Waters Green. In 1976 I was made redundant on finishing my apprenticeship with the electricity board so had little to do all day as I worked my notice. There were several Fittons pie fans in the office who said it was rumoured that they were closing down, so one morning I took a van to the Chester Road shop to buy the office pie order, I think they closed down shortly after that. Looking on Google it looks like there are now new pie shops in Macclesfield.
  16. Are we talking the late lamented Fittons pies ?
  17. Like all modelling activities just get stuck in and give it a go. We all learn from our mistakes and practice really does make perfect. You will also get a sense of achievement when it turns out better than expected.
  18. I seem to remember that a few years ago there were complaints that there was nothing like the epoch system for British models. We now have the era system which is a standard for several manufacturers and that appears to work well, however it’s never going to suit everyone.
  19. Another vote for Proxxon here. I’ve had several mini drills in the past which all failed for one reason or another. Bought Proxxon 10 years ago and it’s still as good as new.
  20. I think forming a club is much too exciting for dull people, I won’t join and I reckon this bloke is a phoney.
  21. Years ago, when I first took an interest in railway modelling, many of the established modellers were people who had seen active service in the war, had lived with rationing or had done national service. They were were a happy go lucky bunch who believed in make do and mend and had a can do attitude. Now we seem to be over reliant on ready made models with manufacturers being berated for omitting to provide a very specific livery or minor variation. I’m sure TT 120 will appeal to modellers who want to roll their sleeves up and get making things. TT in its various guises is a very appealing Goldilocks scale and now that realistic track is available it’s time give it a go.
  22. Well spotted, but the single slips have a rrp of £70 which seems a lot given that the diamond crossing is £30.
  23. I didn’t know we had started a philosophy thread, must dust off the old monty python song.
