Yes, it definitely repays to look before buying I reckon, even for books published by some of the more well-established publishers, though getting to proper bookshops is becoming ever more a challenge.

One of the problems is that scanning is often done "on the cheap" with low quality equipment and by operators who have had little training. Even using good equipment, experienced scanner operators do not always have the "feel" for monochrome images which is where I see the most cause for complaint. In the end, the blame must be laid on the publisher who accepts and sells the book.

Overprocessed to highlight shadows seems to be the norm these days. I've not bought a few books because they are utter cr - rubbish

His commentaries never seem to be complete without at least a dozen corny puns - plus a reference to something being "commercially sensitive".

However, that's a key part of what makes them enjoyable - as is trying to guess which puns he'll come up with.

That very Clayton was the yard pilot of Fountainhall on the Borders line in the early 60s when my father was growing up there (my granddad was the station master). I saw it at the SVR the other day there as well, in fact I even despatched it!
