  1. Have the actual government ever bought trains; or have they authorised other bodies to buy them? (or is that your point?)
  2. Beat me to it!. This was also mentioned on the original thread
  3. Thank you! I know that pre-grouping railways had running powers over the lines of others, especially to reach isolated goods yards, but I just couldn't see the Great Northern having a yard so far from their parent system. I take it that the GNoE became part of the York Newcastle and Berwick in due course.
  4. Same here! Would have thought it was the normal way of doing things. All machines updated at the same point as well.
  5. Love it if my club was in the National League!. Latics would meet a lot of old friends there, TBH
  6. We're in the UK, not France, nor Italy
  7. What is your reasoning behind that? If services now running on the WCML are diverted onto HS2, why should the fare structure be any different to what it is today (neglecting inflation, and general rises)? We don't do high speed premium fares in the UK
  8. Also begs the question; are those commuting into, or from, office jobs in London going to be using trains on HS2, especially through the day. Obviously, there will be some at certain times of day, especially at the southern end, but that's surely not what the line is being built for.
  9. That's why I pluralised "Governments". I suppose a big problem is that a government might come up with a long - term plan (such as HS2), but that plan might not accord with the point of view of the following government; the great example being the change of direction in 1979. And again in 2010.
  10. The whole post. When will (modern) government ministers realise that it's infrastructure projects, like HS2, like Werrington Junction, like East - West Rail, like road improvements, that can keep the economy moving during a downturn? Apart from anything else, it puts money into the pockets of those doing the work, which is spent into the economy; and the treasury will get returned to them a sizable chunk of the money spent by them in the form of taxes and revenue. The investment usually returns greater sums than the money spent in the long term, as well, even if it's in intangible ways, such as reducing road congestion costs.
  11. That one of Deal almost looks French to me
  12. You'll Pity Me if I say I don't know. (village just north of Durham City)
  13. I recall a band around here from the 1970s, who called themselves The Wide Open Beavers
  14. If you were at sea, the red oil was for the port sidelight
  15. Obviously, there are exceptions!
  16. Only one means of escape? I was always told you should have two, in case one was obstructed.
  17. Also, the French Dunkerque (8 x 13") and Richelieu (8 x 15") classes
  18. HMS Nelson and Rodney had all their main armament forward; the original design from which they were cobbled together had the rear turret not far aft of midships. It wouldn't have been able to fire directly astern.
  19. The English, in particular, had a reputation for rioting every now and then, sometimes instigated by their "Betters". In the case of Dic Penderyn, and the Merthyr riots coupled with those in Newport, were more to do with the early manifestations of Reform agitation and Chartism. Luddism was dead by 1817, more or less.
  20. Beginning of the 19th, actually. Very localised as well; Croppers in the Colne and Calder valleys in the West Riding; and stockingers in Nottingham Derby and Leicester. All protesting about machinery (which could be operated by comparatively unskilled labour) who would cost less than them.
  21. I take it you didn't go back that way for a while!
  22. You could postulate a streak (A4) or Hymek on railtours Otherwise, remember rule 1
  23. One of the Brits, I believe was 70014. There were two allocated to SL specifically for the 'arrer
