  1. The first pic.; when was Michael Caine on the railways?
  2. Naming East Coast express passenger locomotives after racehorses goes all the way back to L.N.E.R. No. 4473 Solario, in 1923.
  3. Are you sure bout that? Some people do buy houses to make a profit.
  4. Far too far up the pyramid: They should restart at level 4 of non-league; for the Northern clubs, that's Northern Premier League Division 1 West (could you imagine Seel Park packed to the rafters!), and for the Southern ones, the appropriate regional divisions in the Southern/Isthmian Leagues. There is only one guaranteed promotion spot from each division, so it would be "interesting"!
  5. Wont matter in a couple of seasons! The club who play at Bower Fold are being run into the ground; you'll be able to go to both, and see both teams. As long as you don't end up at Ewen Fields, that's fine by me! On the general European Super League thing, yes, I do think the Premier League have got a darned cheek whinging the way they ae
  6. Morris sides (at least you got that bit right, although there's an online debate about nomenclature at the moment) aren't normally attached to pubs, except as places to refuel after their exertions; nor do they compete. They don't need any excuse for a beer....or two.....or six......
  7. Remember seeing her off Mauritius on my last trip,in 1979. Only carrying helicopters, then
  8. Given the relative dimensions of the ship and the canal, would increasing its speed have exacerbated the effects of 'squat'?
  9. She didn't have to wait six weeks? She didn't get "Go for this job, or no payments"; or anything else.
  10. Weren't they based at Reddish? Manchester, which isn't actually in The Pennines, is comparatively quite dry; the rain falls further East
  11. The protection isn't worth the paper it's written on. You've obviously also never had to do battle with the Universal Credit system.
  12. Yes, the only place I ever locked my cabin door when I was in the cabin! (m.v. Border Shepherd, 1976)
  13. Where was Ashburys West in relation to Ashburys East?
  14. "Boxing the compass" for signal box names has a precedent. March at one time had South, North, East and West Junction boxes, along the same stretch of line.

    Panic buying

Known to seamen the world over as a "Top end spanner"
  16. I can recall seeing them around March in the early to mid - 60s, mainly with Brush 2s (class 31) of which there seemed to be a lot round there, then; no discrimination over hauling or propelling
  17. Now a warehouse site. Always likely, given its position next to the M1
  18. That's why we need limits, fits and tolerances in manufacturing. Even if they are rather crude
  19. Congratulations on a very plausible design, but surely it would have been a K4, or K5; the only other builder of 2-6-0s had only reached 3 by the time of the grouping. I remember seeing a side elevation of the MT 4-4-0, in Backtrack; the number of which I can't remember, but in the early 2000s, think.
  20. Probably longer than that, if the government are covering spending on HS2 by the issue of Gilts; some can run for up to 20 years, or longer, before maturity; so nearer 40 years, I reckon!
