  1. I see many people using Sam's video as reference when talking about the lamps. I know some of you see Sam'sTrains as the Bible while some see him no more credible than GB News, alas, I don't care. Mind looking a bit further at Class47Peter's video? To me, the graphical way he ripped the lamps shows how ridiculous the lamps are, and to an extent how ridiculous the model is, more so than Sam running it with an LNER tender. Of course, his model his choice. I'm not in any way trying to criticise Class47Peter's way of handling his Black 5.
  2. If you logic stands, would it be equally unfair for somebody to label it as "Hornby's best/finest/ultimate Black 5"? This suggests the product is somehow inherently faultless, while others have had the product and found issues with it. Following your logic, would this claim be misleading and untrue? When everybody has no more than a single data point, what do you realistically expect them to do? The amount of right to compliment a product using a single data point should be balanced by an equal amount of right to criticise the product using a single data point. From the audience's perspective, the solution to overcome the "single data point" problem is simply to watch multiple reviews. If a person relies on a single source for reviews, whilst perfectly aware other sources are available, that person only have him/herself to blame.
  3. Has anyone done a side by side comparison of the old Black 5 and the new one? I'm interested to know if the "upgrades" are worth it. I've scrolled from page 27 to here, and there doesn't seem to be one. Having watched a few reviews on youtube (including Class47Peter and Sam'strains), I think it's fair to say everybody agrees you can't change the headlamps without completely ripping it apart. This sounds like a bit of a joke to me. Not to mention the tail lamp on the tender. Personally, I'd prefer having no head/tail lamp just like all my other steam locos over having a largely imperfect solution. ---- A bit off topic here. Accurascale people I know you're watching. If people don't like the giant Hornby lamps, they probably won't appreciate yours on the yellow Class 31.
  4. J36 in 2017 and J15 in 2014 (as dated on the back of the box), so not that much of a difference
  5. I can't overstate how much I love this comparison. I'm sure Tri-ang was trying to break into a market with at least 3 well-established scales, each with hundreds (if not thousands) of products, in the 50s and 60s. Not saying Hornby is wrong in launching TT120, but they have created a somewhat difficult task for themselves. Its success in the medium/long term will require some degree of scale loyalty (and perhaps brand loyalty too). No one really wants Hornby to fail. If Hornby TT fails, Hornby OO will certainly be impacted and that's not gonna be good for the hobby. Not to mention the impact it will have on modellers/families who have put their money in TT products. Same for anyone who is launching a new scale tomorrow/in the future, the later you do it, the harder it gets due to the existing scales in the market.
  6. We were invading from Leeds, all of us masters students studying transport
  7. Yeah we saw you wave at us. I was in a group of around 100, there were lots other people too.
  8. Spotted your train whilst on Mam Tor today, what a coincidence
  9. Ooh, they finally got the tender to show. In mid October at GETS they paired the loco with an LNER group standard tender which looked somewhat silly.
  10. Interesting point. What about the 805s, 807s and 810s that are yet to be delivered? Are they also old products? From the discussions above, it would seem having a contract without an option to purchase extra units/coaches is not the wisest.
  11. I wonder if there is a demand for class members other than No.1, and to include some detail variations.
  12. Who in their right mind planned this route? Apparently the other direction is fine. (Edit: I discovered it's not. Eastbound 1U27 and 1U79 does the same thing.) Do they do it to avoid occupying the Leeds platform for too long and they don't have anywhere else to stable the train for 20 minutes? That's the only reason I can think of. Despite having 18 platforms, it does appear that Leeds have a platform shortage issue. Okay let's not digress further and stick to rolling stock.
  13. Quite the opposite. Does nobody remember what happened in 2021? https://www.railwaygazette.com/uk/mass-cancellations-as-hitachi-trains-grounded-by-cracks/59078.article They learnt their lesson, that's why they're diversifying. It only becomes a problem when you over-diversify, which LNER is far from it. Avanti is also quite far from it, as the Hitachis are going to replace the voyagers, so they're not increasing the number of types of trains they operate.
  14. It works both ways. Having too many types hurts you, while having only one type hurts you as well. Say there's an issue with the Hitachis so you have to ground all of them, you still have the CAFs, vice versa. If you only have one single type, then you ground 100% of your fleet. Unless of course you're a small TOC like Hull Trains or Lumo where you only have a fleet of 5 trains.
  15. I'm surprised this topic isn't getting locked. Firstly there is already "More model ideas", secondly last time somebody wished for a King class, it got locked very quickly because allow me to quote AY Mod: I do suppose there are some techniques in creating wishlisty topics that would determine whether it gets locked or not(?)
  16. I think we can expect one or two fictional liveries, or is 95820 enough for BR modellers?
  17. https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=744055647704127 Here comes another documentation.
  18. My focus is Eastern Region steam, I own a J15, J27 and J36 (all in BR livery). I've been looking for an affordable D16/3 in BR lined black for a quite some time, but to no avail. In fact, only one such variant was ever produced by Hornby (R3234). I think there is some connection between livery and saleability. I've seen the D16/3 pop up at retailers multiple times, but it's always the LNER lined black variant or the E prefix variant. The apple green one also never pops up. The LNER J15 also seems to stay on the shelves much longer than a BR J15.
  19. GCR 4-6-0s are certainly interesting, but with so few surviving into BR and no celebrity loco, most of them are unlikely to have RTR models. Let's see which of the 9 classes would stand a bigger chance. The Victorian looking classes: B1/B18 (1903) - only 2 built, last withdrawn 1947 B4 (1906) - 10 built, last withdrawn 1950 (never wore BR numbers), last GCR 4-6-0 to be withdrawn B5 (1902) - 14 built, last withdrawn 1950 (never wore BR numbers) B9 (1906) - 10 built, last withdrawn 1949 (2 wore BR numbers) The express passenger classes: B2/B19 (1912) - 6 built, last withdrawn 1947, only inside cylinder GCR 4-6-0 B3 (1917) - 6 built, last withdrawn 1947 (excluding the Thompson rebuild) The mixed traffic classes: B6 (1918) - only 3 built, withdrawn 1947 B7 (1921) - 38 built, last withdrawn 1950 (11 wore BR numbers) B8 (1913) - 11 built, last withdrawn 1949 (never wore BR numbers) To extract maximum era, you only have the B7 and B9 to choose from. The B7 appears to be the most successful GCR 4-6-0, so it would have a relatively bigger chance (although that's still very slim). The B2 and B3 look impressive, but do they have enough celebrity status?
  20. Bachmann Mk1 Sub £34.95 or £29.7 (retailer) Accurascale Mk1 Sub £64.95 or £58.46 (multiple purchase) In comparison, Bachmann Tyne Dock 9F £249.95 or £212.45 (retailer) Hornby Tyne Dock 9F £252.99 or £227.69 (retailer)
  21. It's certainly interesting (perhaps a tad bit funny too) to go back to page 7 and read the exchanges between Hilux5972 and myself. Hornby have always shown the artwork of 2002 without extra smoke deflectors. It's not like Hornby tried to deceive customers with the artwork. Yes, Hornby "promised" to add the smoke deflectors to the model, but not to the already announced variant apparently, as I figured out in Nov 2022. I don't think there is a need to be disappointed at all if you have managed your expectations correctly. And given Hornby have developed the variant with smoke deflectors as shown by the CAD images, there's a very high chance they're announcing it in the 2024 (or 2025) range. They promised it too, so it should be coming soon. That aside, my eyes are on 2003, which is looking pretty amazing. My plan is to renumber it to 60992 to create a what-if so that it fits into my era (BR steam).
  22. The only new announcements so far this year are the Class 66 and the Class J67/68/69. Other announcements are all re-runs or exclusives.
  23. The shiny tyres are an eyesore. Don't think they chose a very good promotional image because retailer images look much better. Other than that, from the comments online, it's a good model.
  24. When were these locomotives last in service? 36 to 40 years of age they are, but I would imagine they served nowhere near that.
