  3. Anyone have any idea what the first one is? About 2-3" across, on brambles alongside a wide path\track going through woodland. Fairly open wood, deciduous trees. Possibly a Dark Green Fritillary, but they are supposed to be smaller.
  4. Back out training again today for my charity walk in August and ended up back on the Arundel Castle Estate. Saw the following (amongst lots of other) and thought at the time that they were the same, however, when looking it appears to be two different types of Fritillary. First one I'm not sure about. Second is, I think, a Silver Washed Fritillary. First Second Edited to get them the right way around!!
  5. Seen next to the River Arun, "Beautiful Demoiselle"

  9. It says in the header that 95% are from his own notes, while the others are from unimpeachable sources!
  10. "Dodo Shale Oil Company" Extinct before existence.
  11. I have the first three books in that series. They only show outline drawings. Book 1 is a signed copy with some additional notes.
  12. Have you seen one of these. From the "Getting Close to Wildlife" thread again. Dappled White? http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/56877-getting-close-to-wildlife-litteraly/?p=2775133

  15. I'll have to go through it again tonight, but I think it was 99.9% sure it was DES14, but it was quite a protracted discussion! Not something that happens on CA. Always short, sweet and to the point on here
  16. For being in the way and causing them to have to put up silly signs and fences, so that you don't do something stupid and hurt yourself on thier building site?
  17. These are some Holly Blues I posted on the "getting up close to wildlife" thread And a Common Blue that was posted by Johnny777
  18. There's some discusion about the fireless Loco in that link to the Kings Lynn Forum here I can't get access whilst at work (blocked!! Unacceptable contents!!!) but i seem to remember it was an Andrew Barclay fireless engine that came from the Department of Supplies at Gretna military site. (From memory AB number No 1105? Not sure about that num!) (D.E.S. 14). One of a batch of 15 (or 14 or 17 dependeing upon site looked at) supplied to DES. It was sold of to an oil company in Scotland, guess it then found it's way to Norfolk! Edit to add :- Is possible that the loco and wagons were used after the Oil company failed, as the area was then used to extract gravel. Edit 2 :- the number was 1554 not 1105! Dave
  19. Yep, agree that they are the same. As I said it does assume that is/was No 4! However, the aerial photo does appear to show front gardens and different roof line/gables. Although they could be new build post WW2 damage to earlier ones from Original image. Certainly an intriguing mystery. Dave
  20. On Goggle earth you can go back to a 1945 image of the road and it appears to shows front gardens for this road (Taken from Google Earth)
  21. Looking at the image linked to above, and assuming that it is the correct road (& No.) then the houses do not match. lookin at a map (1938) os 1;25000 on NLS http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17&lat=52.5074&lon=-2.0118&layers=10&b=1 and 6" to mile http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17&lat=52.5074&lon=-2.0118&layers=6&b=1 there were no houses around the corner. Therefore it looks like these are the ones that we are trying to match up to. However, the gables, roof line doesn't match, so is it correct? Edit to remove spelling and a keyboard that keeps giving me any extra "ee"
  22. There's two photo's of Mc Kean Road on this Genealogy Site. One says No4 Mc Kean Rd, that's the right end of the road, but may be on the part adjacent/parallel to the railway. (i.e around the corner!) 1914 and 1920 https://www.genealogyforum.co.uk/forum/gallery/album.php?album_id=14&sort_method=image_name&sort_order=ASC&start=144
