They were certainly quite uncommon on the GE line to Colchester and beyond. I've had a quick look at my photos and as far as I can see I have only two photos of centre headcode 37s on passenger workings south of Colchester and one on a train of car carriers in the up direction at Shenfield. The only other one is at Harwich, which may well have come from the Ipswich direction. I've not counted the split headcode photos but there are a lot more! David

I've only visited Didcot once ,in May 1979 which I think was on one of the Bank Holiday weekends. This was probably because I never enjoyed the journey from Fenchurch Street to Paddington - or for that matter Fenchurch Street to anywhere as it involved either a walk to get to the Underground or changing at Barking to the Hammersmith and City line (or for other journeys at Upminster to the District line). Perhaps I was lazy! It appears that if you were a volunteer at Didcot at this time it was helpful if you knew something about Morris Dancing. I never did find out what had happenedin 1966 but I assume that there had been an "incident" with a freight train. When (if) I get time I'll look back through Dad's photos to see when the sleepers etc appeared. The DP2 accident was a bit further north a year later, in 1967. After the DP2 accident the crossovers at Pilmoor were used to allow wrong line working around the blockage. David

I sometimes stayed in Flensburg, in the north of Germany, on my way back from Germany and Switzerland to catch the ferry to North Shields from Esbjerg in Denmark. Staying in Switzerland this evening with a visit ti Disentis. Disentis is the end on junction between the Rhätische Bahn and the Furka Oberalp Bahn (now the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn or MGB). At Disentis the RhB and FO local services terminate while other trains, including the Glacier Express, change engines from the rack fitted FO locos to the adhesion only locos of the RhB. It is also worth having a walk around Disentis, it's a pleasant place. The Benedictine monastery was founded around 720.
