  1. From the photos, would it be correct in interpreting the roofs as being painted blue for a short stretch and then the remainder standard dark grey ? .. (a modelling question as I have some to build).
  2. As others say a good sable brush and thin the paint, very finely wet and dry and apply thinned coats again.... and patience.
  3. Excellent thread , dare I ask what body filler is your weapon of choice ?
  4. I replaced some recently, the tire size I tried with my local shop I think are a spare for a Hornby steamer, but I can't recall what loco . But they do the job. Might be worth trawling though the pdf s on the Hornby website.
  5. Darius, looks good and a great promotion for mkt/nnk as they really are not as bad as all the knockers state. Given the potential kits that are now sitting with Phoenix precision it would be nice to see ones such as these released...maybe the updated website might satisfy us and allow the missing gaps of dmu/emus to be modelled again.
  6. BMW alpine white is an excellent match for the current abello greater anglia colour on a grey undercoat.
  7. Br blue....we might have loathed it at the time, but my god it now looks so smart compared with today's toothpaste incarnations!
  8. The Lima model also has a circuit board that looks dcc compatible, but I recall from observations at the time that it was rather economical with the truth and that people had to rip it out and build their own.!!!! That aside you don't see many Lima examples for sale ....so perhaps they aren't so bad after all??
  9. Interesting that the 68 issues appear in the main to be on the DRS models and not the scotrail or chilten models and accepted that the latter two have less complex liveries.
  10. Hi, it's a case really of taking a choice, as the old Hornby body shell is more correct in having the rear cab windows and they are cheap to buy, but the bogies just don't resemble anything, whereas the Lima bogies are spot on but somewhat harder to find these days. But I don't know if the current railroad hst has the correct combination which could be an option for you.
  11. Disappointing as it is, let's not forget that rapido and locomotion are not multi nationals with unlimited resources, so maybe we just need to be patient for the time being, unless oxford have an iron hidden in the fire !
  12. Makes the triang / Hornby ones look a total bargain , and que some easy modelling to produce the end plates and buffers.
  13. .yep...I'm sure that Dave won't disappoint, and it's interesting see what's gone before.
  14. That last example is stunning, and goes to show how a combination of flush glazing and weathering bring life to a model. And seeing that MTK and dc have played their hand, here my genesis example not built by me , has Lima power and despite all the misgiving about their pancakes, this one is so well run in and has a good weight that it runs smoothly and quietly.
  15. New cross rail unit was at ilford today, makes you realise how dated the existing stock is.
  16. Office Xmas meals always pay dividends..,, gb class 92 and green/large logo blue 37's at Stratford tonight around 10 pm... and hopefully a sound head tomorrow am!!!!
  17. Good news.....I just hope they get the phantograh looking right otherwise it could become a lame duck !
  18. How about the sat link GUV at the back of ilford depot always visible... and the blue GUV at Ipswich.....not so visbile..only from the road !
  19. Travelled on a refrub 321 in the peak on Tuesday.....more minuses than pluses. Air con and low noise a plus...on the minus side doors rattle more than the originals, lighting is really too bright, the interior is as harsh and conveys the ambiance of a 1970's br loo,and then to top that I have sat on more comfortable church pews.
  20. I hope the Sharks demise is premature , as for the past month or so freightliner have parked up a 66 in front of it during the morning and evening peaks ... Or at least when I pass through, I assume on a thunderbird role ?
  21. Good read, I know what you mean about the model torque motor , I have one in a phrtotype hst , and it moves like a scolded cat! So the h&m setting is on half wave just to make things a bit more controllable . I was surprised how noisy the 73 sounded on the clip, I have a couple of very run in Lima examples and not only are they very quiet they are amazingly smooth for a Lima pancake .
  22. Great collection of photos chaps .....never ceases to amaze me that Hornby have never released the 86 in its earliest livery...and with a Lima pantograph ,as the basis body shell really stands the test of time.
  23. Mmm 2 trains to Norwich in 90 mins in each direction ... Just a bit of pr spin is it really worth their bother ? Br almost did that back in the early 80's with class 47's...turnip tv hs been barking on about the 90 mins for ages now and only 4 trains a day is an insult to people's intelligence.
  24. Probably a long way off for you, but southern finecast Hornby mk1 glazing is an exact fit for the side and rear windows if using the early Hornby body shell, the guards door Windows on the shell seem to be about half the length on the class 41.
