  1. That is absolutely fine Torper but I doubt (hope) you would be so narrow minded as to suggest that diesels have no place there.
  2. Did that line when they had a Deltic as a guest. It has to be said not the most interesting but I always think a DMU adds to the interest. Oh to do the Settle to Carlisle on one! I always visit any preserved railway when staying close to one. Some people do have extreme views and I have little doubt that some of the staff would have that opinion but to my mind they should never ever express it to a paying visitor. I suspect the Diesel Gala would wind then up a treat then! If it is a preserved railway then 'anything' that is preserved has a rightful place there and if it attracts visitors it is doing what it is supposed to. I am not overly fussed what I travel behind and can't be doing with extreme views that have no understanding how the preserved railway make a living.
  3. Sadly had to do this far too often in my past and you do get used to picking up the pieces (literally). I agree with you that it is a shame that more people rather than stop to see if another living being is alright they would choose to film it instead. These days people just don't want to be involved so won't help. Mind you on the other hand people in that sort of situation can do more harm than good in trying to move someone thinking they are doing the right thing. It does make you wonder the ratio of people who used their phones to contact the emergency services as opposed to just film the debris.
  4. Not that impressive with your child in the car. Ratted and could have killed her child. Responsible adult.......................not!
  5. Pleased that you have been encouraged to visit which surely was one of the main aims of the NYMR getting involved in the programme. Also pleased that you have not been put off by the false jeopardy and poor continuity that seems to have upset so many in here. Having visited it on numerous occasions over the years I can safely say it will be well worth your while. I will take a chance here on being attacked by some but I like to travel on the DMU as you get to see the track and views a lot better.
  6. That logic is flawed. Banks give out credit cards to make it easier for people to buy things when they don't have the cash. They do this in the full knowledge that many, if not most will not be able to pay the full balance off and will incur interest charges. If you are in a position to pay off the card at the end of every month it is highly unlikely that to do that you will keep a bundle of cash under your mattress. More than likely the money to pay it off will be kept in the very bank where the card was issued and therefore earning the bank interest on a daily basis. Therefore you are a profitable customer. Having checked my credit score a couple of times in recent years I can say it has not changed by my insistence of paying off the card every month in full. The statement saying it 'could' work against me or anyone else in that position is right in as much as it could if the banks thought the way you suggest but they don't and it doesn't. In effect a credit card and the offers they have are just loss leaders. Much the same as someone offering a magazine free for three months but taking your direct debit details in case you don't cancel. They know many people will either forget or just not bother to cancel. Same as Insurance companies trying to do you a favour by getting you to agree to continual direct debit to save you the hassle of making sure your insurance doesn't lapse. Once more they know a high percentage of people will just go with that rather than check to see if they are being ripped off. For the avoidance of doubt. Paying off your credit card in full each month does not make your credit score worse.
  7. Another myth. There is no proof. Paying it off each month cannot damage your credit rating but it does show that you are credit worthy. Quite a lot can affect your credit rating including applying for another credit card because it can look like you are spending beyond your means. However after a short while your credit rating will go back up when it is seen beyond doubt that you are not spending beyond your means and still paying off what you owe. We only ever use Barclaycard and use it for most stuff except supermarket food purchases. We always pay it off at the end of the month and benefit from cash back. In fact I had more cash back from it last year than interest from my ISA! It makes sense to me to take advantage of the cash back offer rather than pay by debit card where there is no incentive. So back to the question by the OP. Pay it all off every month and never pay any interest at all. How someone can actually state that paying it off every month damages your credit rating baffles me.
  8. Oi! I was born in Chesterfield! Any more of that talk and you could be sat on top of the crooked spire!
  9. No publicity is bad publicity so they say. Whoever 'they' are.
  10. Sadly because there are few if any actual Police Officers on the motorway and they are replaced by Highway Agency units instead little is done about illegal parking on the hard shoulder. Having driven on the motorways a couple of times recently I have only seen one patrol car in hundreds of miles. The Traffic Department or Roads Policing Unit as it is now called has been decimated in recent years. Replaced by cameras and smart motorways which which are incapable of detecting much other than the odd speeder.
  11. Bit of a railway connection with this picture. Two of the great train robbers being returned to Leicester prison in 1968,
  12. No hard shoulder means the Emergency services will often be unable to get to a scene as quick or even at all.
  13. I agree to the point that it 'should be' but am realistic to know that it isn't and it isn't going to change. Dumbing down is with us and will no doubt get worse as the years go on. There are literally thousands of channels and programmes to watch so these days making a programme is far different from when we had two channels to choose from and they closed at 10pm! What you would like and what I would like, be that educational or whatever is of no concern to the average telly watcher and the makers know that.
  14. This programme isn't for us 'experts'! It is for the general masses who neither know nor care about the stuff that we do. If everything went to plan and there was no drama the programme wouldn't entertain the masses and the Producer knows that. So they make all of this stuff up and that way it adds to the excitement for the great unwashed sat at home having to have explained to them in three minutes time what they have just seen. It is telly get over it. If as a series it gets people who have never heard of the NYMR or travelled on it to visit and spend money then it has done it's job. Who knows it may also enlighten some that have no idea about preserved railways and they may then visit one elsewhere in the Country. If so job done. Obviously there is no need for Piglet to drive his car or ride his bike to the other stations to see what happens because he could just as easily travel on the train. That wouldn't be as exciting for the viewer. Don't forget the average viewer needs to be entertained otherwise they will change channels and watch some other inane drivel. Why can't we just sit and watch it and think the countryside and scenery looks good and see a bit of preserved stock that some of us will never see? Just accept it for what it is, light entertainment.
  15. 9 out of 10 statistics are made up!
  16. This has been discussed on here a number of times before but the search function is a little clunky at the moment. Here is one with other stuff in the thread. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/25916-best-height-for-a-layout/
  17. I would say they did because Northern Cyprus is full of them.
  18. My immediate thought on reading this is how rude and and argumentative.
  19. Some great pictures as usual Nidge. Sadly Ladbroke Grove always reminds me of the tragedy there. The picture of the BMW seems to also include a coat hanger aerial!
  20. At our local Aldi the spaces are far wider than normal and it is easy to open your door and get in or out of the car without risk of biffing the car next door. Having said that some still manage to park cock eyed which negates the extra space. As a general rule I will reverse into a space because you are normally in more of a hurry to drive out anywhere than in. A lesson I learnt to my cost early on in my driving.
  21. Jeremy I believe that has been posted on here before possibly by Shortliner. Thanks for the reminder and as it happens I was doing it today and thought about that article. Simply put move your head to look and not just your eyes. Of course it doesn't take into account them that don't even look. In any event well worth a read.
  22. Better headings will always make it easier for people to pick up on the thread rather than just drift past it. I often say Google is your friend but I would advise against Googling the thread title on a shared or company computer!
  23. Couple of things that have been mentioned in respect of motorcyclists that I would like to expand on. First talk of blind spots in mirrors of vehicles. A car can be hidden in the blind spot so a bike certainly can. I was always taught in cars and on bikes you NEVER overtake where someone has the opportunity to turn right be it into a road, drive or even a field. If you are in a blind spot and you try and overtake a vehicle where they have an opportunity to turn right you are putting yourself in danger. Secondly SMIDSY has been mentioned. So for those that don't know what it means or haven't heard it before it refers to 'sorry mate I didn't see you'. Usually spoken by a motorist to a biker who they have just pulled out in front of and knocked them off. Lots of riders are knocked off by cars or whatever pulling out onto the main road from their nearside. Part of the way to combat this riders are taught to look for eye contact so basically look to see that the driver is looking your way. That is OK and should be done but it by no means is evidence that they have actually seen you. The eye can focus on the middle distance and not see what is closer and that often happens. When I come across a vehicle on my nearside waiting to pull out I do all of that mentioned plus think to myself not I wonder if he has seen me but I will slow down a bit and cover the brake because they are highly likely to pull out in front of me. All of this is very basic road skills and 'should' be taught to motorcyclist on their CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) and certainly was when I was training riders. It was also taught to fold on improver, Advanced and Born again rider courses. Sorry if this is hammering the points home but the death of the young man in Norfolk could have been avoided had he used those basic skills as opposed to the basic urge to ride as fast as you can. If my mentioning this stuff gets through to one person and stops another family from having to deal with the death of a loved one then is is worth it. As you may tell I am passionate about this sort of thing.
  24. Why are you Guys using or wanting to use the iphone speakers? Are they supposedly a better sound than other speakers we would normally have access to? Never seen it explained anywhere hence my question.
  25. I am inclined to agree with you Royal. I thought at the time that he shouldn't have been convicted and am surprised there wasn't an appeal. I seem to recall it was an elderly gentleman who was the driver. As I say I doubt many could have estimated the speed of the bike and many would have taken the turn because when they first saw it they would think it was far enough away to go assuming it was near the speed limit.
