The new Hornby Loriots have arrived at Footplate in Kidderminster. Hope they don't mind me sharing their photo Puzzled I couldn't find a separate thread for this new tooling. Be interested hear peoples views on this new model.

So perhaps we should abandon the idea that a loco with a large number of members of the class, a wide geographic range, a wide variety of liveries and long lived, make good models for mass production. Number in the class - 2 Area of operation - London to East Anglia Length of service in this form - 1951 when both were converted to B17/6 and the stream lining removed. So the smaller the number built, the smaller the area of operation and the shorter the length of service is what is going to determine the models Hornby will make!

If they wanted to differentiate between top of the range and railroad they could take a leaf out of the railways book. I was going to suggest Hornby standard class and Hornby first class, although Hornby super saver advance range and Hornby buy on day of travel range might be more fitting

I said this last year and I think it's worth saying again, I don't understand this wish among many on this site for constant upgrades of already good models. Although I've bought new a couple of kings, castles and prairies. It has all been on the second hand market. Others have brought out new models of engines new to RTR, the dukedog, city, the 47xx, and a rash of panniers and saddle tanks. By the way I'm not forgetting the Grange and Star. I'd rather pay full price for something wholly new than a fortune for a retooling of something that was reasonable if not perfect, to start with. What happened to doing a little modelling to upgrade something? I know this thread refers solely to GWR locos but is applicable to regions and companies

I promised myself I wouldn't engage in this futile exercise but I've been reading with some interest and more annoyance the ongoing debate in this thread My interest is unashamedly Great Western and so sticking to that I expect to see NONE of the following: 1 the last couple of years have seen the production of the Coronation Scot coaches and the announcement of the Silver Jubilee coaches. I'm not aware of similar formations for the Southern, although we have plenty of Pullman's if they want to do the Golden Arrow, and we already have the Brighton Belle. In the Great Western it would either be a new full set of Centenary Stock or Cornish Riviera! I'll plump for the Centenary Stock as being more distinctive. 2 we have catering stock for the Southern, and LNER. If the CS stock was reissued with revised roofs we'd have it for the LMS. The GWR continues to have the antediluvian 57ft restaurant car. So either an updated one or given that Southern got a two car set, perhaps a two car set on 60ft chassis to a later Collett design. Or then again the centenary coach restaurant cars were a double coach combination. 3 having had three old siphons in their back catalogue, they have already lost one to a competitor, will we finally see a revised one? CCTs have already been produced for the LMS and LNER and we have numerous Southern passenger vans. 4 A Saint at last. One based on the modern rebuild would be a change to the standard GWR curved lines and with clever tooling it might be possible to do the more standard version. 5 a new 57xx seems to be likely if one is promised in TT, but it won't get my money I have plenty of the other ones and feel no need to replace them unless picked up cheap. 6 a new auto trailer to replace the old Airfix one. Given the decent panelling that can be done nowadays, one of the older versions would be welcomed by many. Hasn't the Bachmann sold well since introduced? 7 An Aberdare, somewhat left field never been done in RTR and a quirky choice that would sit alongside some of the more unusual things we've seen of late and it would save me having to restore the old Kay's one I've had on hold for years. As I say I don't expect to see any of my well reasoned and informed choices this year and so my wallet and long suffering partner can rest easy Rovex

Bit of confusion on here about the difference between planning and building control. Two different local authority departments who don't necessarily talk to each other. I like to think planning is "can you do something", building control is "how you do something". Conservatories don't usually need planning if they are not at the front and are below a certain size. They don't need building regulations if they are separated from the main house by an exterior door, not connected to the house's heating system and have a clear roof. Thus my question about whether you needed building regulations if you replace the see through roof. Of course I've simplified matters considerably.

I suspected that was the case. I wonder how many do?

I am curious as to what the building regulations position is in relation to these replacement solid rooves?

I liked these kits as a kid and have to agree the big let down was the windows. Which with the thickness of the bars are only fit to represent modern uPVC windows

It's called dry verge apparently. When we had an extension built they made the valley between two roof slopes using plastic rather than lead, which was a new one on me

Are there any versions of the Flying Scotsman that Hornby haven't done yet?
