One comment - the "fiddle yard" appears to have capacity for a dinner plate and a mug.

I'm not sure that's necessary or sensible - food and a layout don't really mix.

A tea shelf is an essential for me. There's no way I'd ever get through a show without drinks!

Melbridge Dock has a cubby hole for KitKats too, and it always proved to be very useful.

Thanks Phil for the advice.  The web was set up as a glorious place where people could freely exchange information - a bit like RMweb used to be.  Facebook and YouTube still appears to be 'free' and I do believe that if you set it correctly you YouTube even pays per view.  'Blogger' also appears to be 'free' whilst Flickr comes at a cost.  I guess it comes down to how much you value a web site.

    Regards  Ray

You are confusing two meanings of "free". The web allows free information exchange - that is anyone can post anything they like.

However, there is always a financial cost - servers, storage, bandwidth and people to maintain all this stuff. That side has never been free, someone always had to pay the bill. With Facebook, they moniterise (sell) all your data AND there are adverts. YouTube works the same way, although it is possible to get a tiny amount of the money made from adverts on your content back, but it is only a tiny amount. Blogger is still free, although the good people of Google own your data. Presumably their massive income allows cross-subsidy to cover the tiny cost.

Basically, RMweb costs money to run and that money has to come from somewhere.

Ultimatly, that is up to you. How much do you value RMweb?

Over the years I have given my time for free to create over 150 quality Blog Posts,   I see this creating significant trafic for RMweb.

If all your visitors also have adblockers switched on, they they are also a cost, not a source of income. Bandwith, disk space and maintainance aren't free.

All we are asking is for people to whitelist RMweb in their adblockers - you are welcome to ignore the adverts themselves. Or at least stop moaning about it! (Better still, as @Mikkel suggests, sign up for Premium at a quid a month, the same as it would cost to host a Wordpress blog).

  4. If you'd watched my video on the coaches, you'd have known that's how they come apart!

You are unlucky with the magnets. I've played with a couple and it seems pretty reliable. The magnet in tunnel thing does sound unlikely, but I've never taken 20 seconds to work the reed switch. The latest model is too sensitive!

  5. All plastic kit wagons will need weight adding to make them run properly - lead flashing bought from a builders merchants seems to work for me and is cheap enough on the roll.

You've some good-looking wagons there and even if one or two give you trouble (we all get it) then you'll still have the pleasure of saying "I built that" as they run on the layout.

  6. Thanks for taking the time to share this with us Andy, what a fascinating subject. The building in photo 11 is what caught my eye I've been thinking of getting one of the kit variety for printing out windows and doors and other architectural components.Squatch

According to the guy on the stand, the market hall would cost around

  7. It's a cracking museum - I have a couple more pictures and some links on my blog today - and not a bad model shop if you need Humbrol paint or an Airfix kit.

Visit quickly though as the sale of the airport means that they might not be there after September. The new owners think that houses are more profitable than runways and they own the building the exhibits are housed in. This would be a great shame as there is a lot to see, it's well displayed and the volunteers who run it are lovely.

  8. This is a great build and owes it's inspiration in Phil Parker's original article in Hornby Magazine.

Thanks very much. I'm really chuffed to see someone having a go at it. As you say, this is a really pleasent build - I've done 2 and enjoyed them both. OK, neither end result was perfect but they were so much more fun than buying RTR.

Looking forward to seeing more. Excellent job so far.

    Phil

  9. J73 - Sorry you've had problems getting hold of the Silver Fox kit. I did have a word with them at a show a few months ago and there was one on the stand. At that point I'd been asked not to mention the bookazine by the publisher but even if I was OK to do this, I don't like going "Do you know who I am?" on anyone. Even if I had, I'm not sure they would have been that excited
