Just a reminder that tomorrow See's the final Class 57 sleeper day coach Veg Ex St Erth, Plymouth, Exeter, Penzance not just for 2017 but EVER !

Then the week after (Saturday 16th) It spends the day on the Bodmin and Wenford Railway for the diesel gala working alongside their home fleet of 33110, 37142 and 50042, double heading between Bodmin General and Parkway. :)

Possibly the best rendition of 47/57 liveries.  It looks like it belongs to the GWR even if it is a diesel loco and far more suitable than some of the technicolour  versions of other companies.  This is what the new rolling stock should have been!

Just about saw this arriving at Redruth, through not where I had expected to due to someone planning some pretty major roadworks to take place on the same day as Pasty day, traffic chaos and 30 minutes to do a journey of less than 2 miles. Had I not had 2 small children with me, walking would have been a much quicker option.

Corrected that for you!

After the recent news that GWR wont be getting their 2+4 HSTs (except the one being converted now) until ScotRail and Cross Country have got theirs it seems very likely that the Veg Express will be running next year,possibly/probably more than once a week.

Some sort of good news even though the mini-HST fleet is delayed.  Why does that not surprise me?

But how is the VegEx stock to reliably manage more than one trip in a week?  It does the Saturday job nicely because it can be unhooked from the sleepers after arrival, quickly cleaned and the loco put on the other end (or changed over) and off you go.  There's no up Beds on a Saturday night so the evening return to Penzance is not a problem and there's 24 hours to service the stock before it's needed again.

On any other day the stock isn't in Penzance until 09.00 (Mondays) and / or is needed again at 20.00 having been fully serviced and cleaned, possibly with a vehicle swap for maintenance.  There are no spares so no margin for error.  If it is to run on other days it would have to be MX or later in the morning and return much earlier in the afternoon.  Possibly just a Plymouth turn then.

And nobody has told US at Long Rock ....!!

At the moment, its all internet talk as we only need 1 additional form of traction to provide the service be it HSTGTi or 150. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see it again... .

Great shots BTW. 604 with fresh repaint does it justice.

A!and totally correct about timings and stock re other days. Even Saturdays can be a hectic time for us, only just got away in time today.. !!

There are spares, there are 3 brake coaches (17173-175), 3 buffet coaches (10219, 225, 232) and 3 TSO (12100, 142, 161) coaches and a daily requirement of 2 of each so a spare of each type which will soon be reallocated to Penzance.

They could be used on  a straightforward Penzance to Plymouth and return or a quicker Penzance to Exeter and return.

The coaches could be uncoupled at Penzance and another loco (also moving to Penzance for maintenance soon) attached and haul the service out or the 08 can haul the sleeper coaches out of the way for the other 57 to attach to the day coaches to form the service, there is no requirement for the day coaches to go to Long Rock for servicing.

Some of us staff do hear what is going to/ likely to happen, of course everything is up in the air until such time as we run out of trains, so about a fortnight until the next 2 HSTs go off lease and there are no IETs in service to replace them and we are in the <oops>.

Coaches reallocated.....??? They are ours and have been for a long time :) (new ones excepted) Expect that PAD designation on 604 to disappear come 5 December too !

Despite the length of time at Wolverton, no physical work has started yet on the new buffet or first brake refurb.

When the locos become yours feel free to go round the no2 cab of 604 and stop all the vibrating bits vibrating, full power gives me a headache.

Talking of 604, its one of the guests at the Bodmin & Wenford this weekend.

And one of Penzances finest drivers will be doing the honours in the morning (he also did the last Veg Express from Exeter to Penzance last Saturday).

Oh the afternoon driver is alright as well, in fact he is the one that organised for 604 to attend!  :sungum:

Nice to see you yesterday for a good chat & thanks again for the photo.....

Cheers Bill

It was good to catch up with you too Bill. The Wadebridge Exhibition is an excellent and I believe much underrated local model railway show with good layouts and great second hand stands at really competitive prices (maybe I should keep that to myself).

I was talking to Fred Elton who was selling the books and photos, (soon to appear on Flickr and probably here) when we both realized we had come across each other at the lineside and passed the time chatting while waiting for trains and taking snaps of specials.

Fred said to me......"you're the one that follows and photographs specials by motorcycle,"......yes that's me!

Here's a picture of Fred in action (nearest to the camera) 17 years ago..... I do like a bit of human activity in my pictures!

Wadebridge Model Railway Exhibition 15/09/2017

Hope it's ok to post this on what I know is essentially a 12 inches to the foot thread as a mater of continuity from my previous posts.

A few pictures from a visit to the Helston Railway on September 24.

Boiler and firebox of Peckett "William Murdoch". Owned by Portsmouth City Museum, and maintained by the GWR Preservation Group, it is on hire to the Helston Railway. It needed boiler work, but is ready to be re-assembled.

On my way home last night I got stopped at Camborne station crossing, I thought nothing of it I waited and was surprised to see 66074 leading 66027. I followed it down to Penzance and took some photos.

Not sure exactly what the wagons are, too modern for me post-18430-0-37135400-1508438766_thumb.jpg

Anice night time shot. Give it another couple of weeks of Rhett season and I’d challenge anyone to work out who owned the locos involved. I have a photo which a friend sent me of a news 66 after rhttseason. It was impossible to tell who’s loco it was as it’s colour was pretty much the same desert sand of the first western all over. I had a friend of mine weather a 66 of mine like it. Always raised a few eyebrows.

Il be dammed! An ex Chiltern bubble car eh!

Is it temporary loan or were BWR the successful bidders??

Sounds like they were the successful bidders based on what has been said on their Facebook page.
