Richie Kynaston
A batch of grids that have been featured in recent weeks finally completed today. Full resprays, and many Shawplan detailing items fitted. First 56012. 56012 by rothburyuk, on Flickr Hi Lee, If you dont mind me asking, im about to have a go at detailing my first model - a Mainline Class 56, which im also regauging to EM gauge. Im looking at the Shawplan site and there are several bits and pieces for the 56s. Which have you use on these models, and how did you go about fitting them? Do you just use superglue? Any thoughts or pointers as to the best way forward for a total novice would be welcomed! Great stuff by the way, love the thread. I think if i was doing this everyday like you seem to be, being a job, id lose all interest in modelling!!! But your stuff does look great. blueeighties
Cheers Lee! That 40's not controversial with me as it looks stunning!! I'm impressed with the replica transfers you've applied. I've has mixed results with them - a set of Transrail rub downs were excellent whereas a set of construction waterslides were terrible as the printing was a right mess. cheers Will Hi Will. Yes, I agree with regards to Replica, they can be hit and miss.

The Mainline 56 was a benchmark model in it's day, and still holds it's own with a bit of detailing. I tend to use Zap-a-gap for fixing. Have a chat with Brian at Shawplan regarding the bits, I think he does a few different bits and pieces as there are some size differences between your older model and the current Hornby one. Hope that helps mate :-)

Their phone number says we don’t provide a phone service anymore and I emailed them about a week ago with no response, which seemed a bit odd when the phone message says we now operate email only! You’d have thought they would be keen to reply in order to maintain their customer contact. I guess they could be away but nothing on their website at the time to suggest that. I appreciate in old fashioned however, and much prefer to pick up the phone than get into email ping-pong! I presume Shawplan is the only option for these kind of things? blueeighties
Yes, much like myself, Brian is a one man band with a very heavy workload. There is only so much you can do, indeed there are some days where emails and phone calls prevent one from getting any work bench stuff done! He also does loads of shows, and to be honest that's the best way to chat to him. The products are worth the wait, certainly with regards to 56 bits, he's all there is. Their phone number says we don’t provide a phone service anymore and I emailed them about a week ago with no response, which seemed a bit odd when the phone message says we now operate email only!I met Brian at the Wigan show, and he is indeed extremely busy. If you’ve had no reply by email, I’d suggest checking the content of it for any words which may trigger the anti-spam settings in his inbox. A while back, I rang him and he said send the email I’d previously sent again (whilst still on the phone), and it went straight to his spam folder. It contained words like 'order' and 'payment', which I can only assume flagged it as spam. As you mentioned, his products are unrivalled and I’d continue to email him until he replies. Even better would be meeting him in person at a show, if he’s at one you’re planning on attending. If (like me) you require a number of things, I’d email him first to ensure he has all the parts with him on the day. Thanks. Jack.

Jack/Lee, Many thanks for both of your replies. Lee, can I ask which parts you recommend using for the 56 model? I’m guessing side and roof grills are a must, but is there anything else that you would always add? Richie

I can't remember what bits the Mainline model requires....it actually has some things present which the later Hornby model does not! I never bother with the side grilles, although it may be an easier job on the older model.
blueeighties
I spend so many unnecessary hours messing about with issues thanks to Hornby's poor design. The cab assembly/light units were impossible to get back into place. I have had to remove the daft chassis mounted contact arrangement and hard wire them in. 31 by rothburyuk, on Flickr Arrgghhhhhhh.... nse by rothburyuk, on Flickr Back to the sanity of a pile of weathering! dj_crisp
Lee... I understand your pain!! I've hard wired all my Hornby locos. Also noticed on a number of them that the loco cabs don't sit properly on the chassis without hard wiring. My 50s were a right pain to get right! Cheers Will
rob D2
Yep, I agree. The 31 is the biggest pain, with those badly fitted cab units. I hate taking them apart. I think I'll stick with just my 2 60s everything else from red box has fallen apart in some way .

rob D2
Some great stuff there, Really like the 31s - first time I've seen a headcode one, in Dutch. I'm amazed Hornby hasn't released that as it was such a common and well travelled livery

blueeighties
Been on with these for quite a while, a pair of 0 gauge Heljan class 26s. Now finished, ready for customer collection today. They have both been repainted from unrefurbished green versions, modified, detailed, sound fitted, and fitted with additional internal lighting. 028 has been modelled shortly after dual braked conversion, so is in slightly cleaner condition than the more heavily worked 26039. A very nice pair. Lovely work on the 37 and the 26's as always Hi chap, thank you I make the handles from scratch. The 'base' is made from plasticard, tje 4 screws are painted on, and the actual handle is .5mm handrail wire. Hope that helps.
