Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Cab Details

I was getting a little stale with all that soldering and fussing around with th chassis for the 2-8-2, so with some 20 thou' Evergreen sheet bought from Trains4U and armed with a pair of scissors, digital vernier, scriber and steel rule I copied the rear platform sheeting and cab doors from my Bachmann standard 5.     Most satisfying, the styrene sheet glued almost instantly with EMA Plastic Weld.   Driver and Fireman's seats next then handrails   EDIT:   I've just become a rivet cou

Norwood Road bridge: abutments

Not much happening for the last three weeks since we've been away, but the jet-lag had receded sufficient by Sunday that it was possible to do some modelling without falling asleep.       These are the abutments and central pillar for my attenuated Norwood Road bridge. It's been kind of a pain, since the only reference pics I found are about 400 pixels wide, but I've been able to find a few details captured in other pictures taken by heroic folk leaning over the bridge to spot some choice

RCH wagon update (5)

I've just realised that I'm a little behind posting to my rmweb blog.   It's been a while ...... and track laying on Tredethy Wharf is progressing slowly. I'm beginning to realise what I've started by using individual LSWR chairs........... and this is just a small/test plank layout!   As a slight distraction and with the encouragement of a recent article in the MRJ 200, I've picked up the RCH PO wagon again. A few months ago I'd put this wagon to one side after becoming dissatisfied w

Flying Banana - Part VII

Hello   Its been a while, the last time I posted it was a bit 'doom and gloom' as I had chopped one end of the railcar around a fair bit because it just wasnt right and I was faced with the prospect of completely rebuilding the end from scratch. I will be honest and this was a bit demoralising and it lead to a spell away from modelling with holidays and other things occupying my interest.   This weekend I finally sat down infront of my modelling table and made a start rebuilding the end of

Rip up the track and start again?

After some playing around with the shelf layout, the track plan has evolved somewhat, following the purchase of a Metcalfe brewery kit to add some operating interest. At present, the projected layout is looking somewhat like this:     However, the Tomix Mini Fine Rail track system (primarily intended for trams) has come to my attention, and using it, it should be possible to fit an oval onto my 1-foot-wide shelf. I'm not sure quite how well it would work, but I have done some rudimentary ex

Walk This Way

Firstly my apologies to all of those who noticed the naffness of the photos in my last post. It was only later that I realised that the camera was set to something like ISO 1600 . Sorry!   This weekend I had an enjoyable Sunday at Shipley show where there were some excellent layouts in a variety of scales; very nice. The traders were a bit of a letdown, but that's the way it goes sometimes. I came away with a couple of book, one on North Eastern sheds and the various locos thereon and one on t

Barrow Road - Ash Disposal Pits

I have recently switched my attention to constuction of the two ash disposal pits under and adjacent to the ash plant at Barrow Road and noticed the track is not supported on the usual timber baulks. Instead, to prevent hot ash from damaging or setting fire to the timber, the Midland used 5ft cast iron panels to support the track.     Using the these photos I calculated the the dimensions of these cast iron panels and then set about finding a suitable way of making a model. My initial i

Bill Bedford Buffer Height Jig.

One of these arrived in the post today. I'd seen it on Eileen's Emporium's site and thought 'that could be usefull'. I've rarely seen these mentioned on here. Here's the etch, note the different baseplates for different gauges;     Cut out and folded up;     And soldered together;     And in use;     Usual disclaimer. I hope someone finds this interesting/usefull.   Paul.

September Update - The Sequel

Due to the rate of progress and an interesting turn of events, I thought it wise to make an additional update.   My completed commissions are winging their way north as I type and work has commenced on the next batch. The first of which is Original West Country 34020 Seaton with two more to follow - it's going to be a busy month. I've made good progress so far, so I should hopefully have her done by Tuesday.   My own Q1 33040 is finished and I've finally got round to fitting the etched plate

Delph - Coal drops latest

Due to personal reasons, I haven't done much modelling in the past 7 months, but some slight progress (and a bit of regress) has been made with the coal drops. The latter was caused by my dropping the deck unit onto a quarry tiled floor, causing it to disintegrate such that the two longitudinals carrying the rails are now separate items which will have to be fixed to the supports individually. The progress has been to make the hand-rails for the deck and do the basic painting prior to fixing. O

Hythe Parkway - Extension Hard Standing

Hi,   Having layed down the base of the concrete hard standing on the Extension of Hythe last weekend, I have been working on it since!   I have been using Andy Y's method for inset track used on his Keyhaven Layout, it's a very good method and works well. I have made one slight alteration, in his Method, Andy uses 'Fabfoam' for in between the rails, but I have used lengths of self-adhesive Floormaster Solid Wood Underlay which is avaible in very large rolls from B&Q, I found it after i

Melding a Hornby Cl 60 chassis into a Hornby Cl 92 body

Hello to one and all!   Well to anyone who has picked up on my other blog. You might no of my complete hatred of poor motors. I can quite happily cope with a few dimensional compromises and the odd little omission of certain details. But what really turns me off a model is the performance of it's motor. If it proceeds along the track sounding like a cake mixer committing Hari-Kiri, then I don't really care how faithful the representation to the original, it has to go.     I've wanted a dece

Djh 8f kit the start.

Recently i managed to pick a djh 8f kit off ebay for £69.99 including wheels. The kit has already had the chassis started & whoever has made it has done an exceptional job it is straight & true having been tested on some mirrorglass.   I've made a start building the tender up, i've watched the right track dvd with tony wright & i'm following his advice. This is my work so far it's going to be a slow build this because i want to make sure everything is perfect       Simon.

LRM Lancs & Yorks brake 3rd 6 wheel coach. Chassis completed

I thought rather than start posts for the various models i am making i decided it would be better to transfer it all here.   Slowly is my new key to building kits & it is working a treat & slowly i have been building a LRM brake 3rd. Now the original idea was to use a cleminson system from brassmasters to make the chassis straight forward but i thought that following the instructions would be better. The kit origins are from d&s models & they are a kit i think are well desig

Yamanouchi Oshika - a slight change of plan!

Hmmm, what do they say about whilst the cats away the mice do play?   Only a couple of us from the N Gauge group were at the club last night, and unfortunately a consensus was reached very quickly about something which had been bothering us for quite some time...the visible section of track behind the yard.   Perhaps one of the reasons why we had gone off this idea was quite simply the novelty had worn off. Another was that it had become out of place for the scenic evolution of the layout...

Proof of life

Well, despite not having updated this blog for months, I have been working on the IHA in fits and starts. This where we are now: hood completed, end platform (from TPM's lovely ferry fittings etch) in position (temporarily, for the photo), still just balanced on its bogies for now but generally looking quite like the real thing.     This was the only decent shot I got before the batteries in my camera packed in, so it'll have to do for now. There are some wierd perspective effects in this p

Class 73 ready for the paintshop

Some pictures of the detailed Hornby 73 - now with lots of bits of wire and plastic attached to the bogies to represent the various cables etc. The 73/0 has vast numbers of cables on it's bogies, far more than the production loco.       The roof mounted horns are from A1 and are soldered to a mounting plate to hopefully make them a bit more robust.   It's taken a lot of work to get this far - the 73/0 looks superficially similar to the 73/1 but there are a huge number of detail diffe

Balance Spring

Take one bit of 1/8" diameter tube (bought at Trains4U last Sunday), drill a 0.6mm hole through the end, elongate this hole with the drill so that two 0.45mm brass wires will pass through. Bend said wires inside so that a 0.7mm wire will pass between them axially down the tube. Repeat at the other end and solder up. Afer cleaning up the ends of the 0.45mm wire you get this     cut excess 0.7mm wire off the long end and flatten with a pair of pilers. Solder to RHS weighshaft bracket (burning

Update

I've been away on my holidays, so did not get a chance to update on progress.   This week, positioning work has been going on for the backscene for Yamanouchi Oshika. It is still temporary, as we are still trying to assess the best way to do this. Backscenes are tricky blighters to get right...there is quite an involved thread on here discussing the pros and cons. I am pro backscene for a number of reasons, firstly to hide what goes on behind the scenery...really does anyone want to see the de

Keeping things civil.

Well since running out of various bits and bobs required to keep making rolling stock I have returned to working on Avonwick. I have been tidying up the baseboards. This has been done by giving the end boards a skin of hardboard. This has gone reasonably well and these boards now look a hugh amount better. I have then been playing with some insulation foam that I had initially purchased to build the boards with (this was a dismal failure ) . In adding this I have also had to create the tunn

Further Progress...

The other DMSO has been modified structurally but I did not bother taking a pic as it looks just like the other one!!   The TSO has also now been tackled. The bogies changed over (I am getting quicker at that now, the first one I did took an hour, these two took ten minutes!) and the open standard interior installed after some surgery to get it to fit.     The original claims from Bachmann when they first announced they were making the 4-CEP was that it would be based on their Mk 1 coach

4-CEP 1500 begins her transformation...

Hello   For years I have been always interested in Network SouthEast era operations and the recent arrival of the Bachmann 4-CEP with further EMU's to come has seen me return to the modelling era I like the best.   This is my workbench thread (I hate the term Blog, sorry!) to record some of the rolling stock that I am working on for the layout.   Current project is the conversion of a standard Bachmann 4-CEP into the refurbishment prototype, unit 1500 in Jaffa Cake livery.   The root of
