Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Backscene

Just a brief update, further to discussions about the backscene, this is a picture of the test one on the scenic board. This was an offcut of hardboard I found at work. Its 15" high but I may have to cut this down a bit to fit the crate or make it removable. Has anyone done a removable backscene? This board is flat so should be ok as there are no curves in the backscene.

Ballast and YGA/YGH

Spent yesterday laying code 55 track on the test track, but that wil appear in a thread later. Also spent some time adding ballast to YGA/YGH.   Cardboard former was cut to shape, then PVA glue and ballast:     This was repeated four times, once for each YGA/YGH.   Here is the YGA which was weathered sometime ago, but it now has a load including some on the discharge chutes and on the decking.     Here is the YGH with its load; looks very clean must get the weahering powders out.

Just playing silly beggars

Having recently had a couple of holidays, bad back and general lack of energy I've not done any real work on St.Oval for several weeks. Tonight I went to the garage and just fancied running something ........ but what ? few laps with a Baccy 56XX, no didn't feel right, Vitrains 37's phew only just make the 1st radius curves. So I got out Marilyn my favourite loco ...... forget 9F's, Collett Goods, 37's, 47's, 33's, single wheelers, I'm in love with Marilyn !!     Hope it didn't freeze whi

Skips and stones...fiddling with gouache

I've managed to get a bit of modelling in today, with both my dummy 67 and my autoballasters hitting the kitchen table today for a dunk in the gouache. Anyone who's not come across this stuff before - it's ace, give it ago! Gouache is a type of paint that's similar to Artist's acrylic, but able to be re-wetted and re-worked once they are dry. This makes them great for rust streaking and subtle dirt streaks for example. It was Martin (Pugsley) who first introduced these to me via a workbench thr

coombe junction - (S)teamwork...

Update - Progress on the third board scenics has been delayed whilst I await for a package of wiring to arrive from the UK and all those fantastic shots from the excursion last weekend got me thinking about another train to model, as short of passenger workings tripping to and from CJ to the fiddleyard and clay hoods to Moorswater, there is little additional rolling stock required for the layout in the era chosen.   So...the idea is to create an 'enthusiasts special' but sort of backdate it to

Control circuit for the 20

KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) well that's the theory. So the control for the 20 is more or less the same as the 25, a motor, batteries and a switch. In fact this is a little more complicated in that the switch is DPDT with a centre off position, so this loco can go in reverse !!   A rare few shots of the underside... Note that there are a pair of holes at either end for the bogies to pivot on, for static pictures I use the external pair but this reduces the turning circle due to the front of th

D6723 - an East Anglian EE type 3

I started making models of the green diesel era about 12 months ago. Having done classes 24, 31 and 15 my friend Mark kept telling me I needed a class 37. Initially I resisted, on the grounds that a 37 was a bit big for the current layout. Then two things happened; I found a picture of a class 37 from the appropriate area and time which I really liked and I decided to build a layout based on a through station for which the class 37 would be entirely appropriate. Finally, James started a threa

Norwood Road Bridge: ironwork

James Hilton suggested a while ago that I'd not really be able to avoid scratchbuilding the bridge if I wanted it to look like Whitemoor - and he's right. Given that I'd done the abutments I thought I'd have a go at the girder.     The above picture is just a quick test - I need to remove some material from the deck so it can sit further back, and there's a fair bit of cleaning up to do as well. Unfortunately I didn't take many work-in-progress pictures this time, although here's one of att

Whats Next? My next N adventure CODE 55

Knew this time had to come sooner or later; have become disgruntled with the current layout Gloucester Road. Though not finished i have begun to look else where and want the challenge of something new. The current layout is 7 years old and is starting to show its age, scenery is looking tired, track (points specifically) are starting to fail, not sure i still want a roundy roundy as the boys are getting older and into operating as opposed to watching, and i have a feeling my skills have moved

Weathering traffic for Kinlet Wharf (just what counts as a British N gauge car?)

Hot on the heels of my people mover scooting around Kinlet Wharf, I have been working on some vehicles for the roads beneath the bridges.   Naturally, I have to remind you that I am not responsible for the excellent scenics that these cars sit in, but I am enjoying adding some little, subtle, embellishments to it.     The question of modern N gauge cars, in a 'local' 1:148 scale sense, is a tricky one. Until recently, I would have followed the usual habit of importing a pocket full of Ger

Scenery - hoorah!

After quite a long time fiddling around with ballast it seemed a good idea to ring the changes and have a go at some scenery.   As the tunnel portal looked quite good I figured, why not make some progress on this area and start to blend it in with the (currently) flat MDF board on which the station throat sits.   The station throat is on quite a steep gradient; long story, but the fiddle yard below has plenty of room to reach into!     Basically I wanted to disguise this gradient a bi

Getting closer, but still a looooooooong way to go

The first of the traction motor units is substantially complete! There's been a bit of trial and error whilst determining what diameter shafts to use for the 1st stage gear. 2mm was too hard to get into the gears square, despite being designed for that diameter shaft.     I've used 1.9mm diamter tubing for the first, with the intermediate gears glued onto the shaft with industrial adhesive, which is supposed to withstand pressures of 3,500psi It's glued everything nice and solid - I've

Handrails on class 20

I've been trying to decide on the best (read cheapest) way of making handrails with brackets, and finally settled on plastic rod.   Start with several short and long lengths     Then after filling a notch in the end of the long pieces a short piece is glued across to make a "T"     When dry the cross bar of the "T" is filed to be flush with the leg, at this point it doesn't look like "T" anymore (see the one on its own on the right)     After drilling holes in the body to push the

Southern Region Clan - what might of been...

OK time to take the wraps off a wee project I've been concocting for a while. Well I've had the plates for about 2 months, I've now managed to get the donor .   A few hours work produced this Clan/6MT 72014 Firebrand. The etched plates are from Jackson Evans and it's carrying a 72B Sailsbury Shedplate. A work of pure fiction I know, as the Southern Region Batch of Clans was never built.   There's work to be done as I still have to varnish and coal, but no weathering I'll be leaving her in p

Weather You Do Or You Don't

Weathering. Do you?   Personally, I feel that everything on a layout should be weathered to some extent such that the whole comes together as one seamless 3D picture. It doesn't necessarily mean that everything has to be as black as a hole in Calcutta; indeed I use more white and light grey weathering powders than any of the others.   Today I've been weathering the coal drops; washes of very thin paint and fine dustings with powders:           I hope the piece is starting to fit in

For those interested...

For those interested i've set up a blog independent of the forum where I will be documenting the progress towards building the layout as well as writing about various other bits and bobs including some of the Scottish prototype lines.   Click the image below to visit the blog.     I've just finished reading the information gathered from the archives, and have also started a workbench to document construction of the stock for the new layout here.

Odds and Ends

I must apologise for my slow progress but house repair tasks have taken all my time at the moment! Progress on Kbridge since last time has been confined to; Wiring completed on the throat board and the ballast and yard surfaces laid. All the point motors were tested too and amazingly everything worked! Thanks to all those who contributed solutions from here. Backscene added to the scenic section- this is currently a trial size as I am unsure wether it will all fit in the crate I have design
