Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Lima 4f Conversions

Started work on converting a pair of Lima 4f loco's - first chassis built. Second chassis 'acquired' already built - just needs refurbishing. Have one Lima tender in bits box - just need a second. Both bodies being modified as per John Middleton's article in Gauge O Guild gazette vol 13, no 12. The plan is to produce a 4f for under a ton(£100). Now trying to source low cost parts etc to complete the project. Will update with pictures/information etc as project develops - see also Gauge O Guil

The thin Orange line

It may not seem like a big job, but it wasn't half fiddly !!   I have applied the orange line round the top, I considered painting it but chickened out. So I stopped off at my local sign makers, and cadged an off cut of orange vinyl tape, its self adhesive and just needed cutting into 1.5mm strips.         Note that Pointing Man has turned up too !!!!   John

McHale's Yard / Wetlands Light Railway

Now I've eventually been told the Hagley/Stourbridge exhibition has been cancelled, I've decided not to finish off the extension, but progress further on Wetlands Light Railway. Unfortunately, from a modelling point of view, there's Rallyday at Castle Combe on Saturday, followed by The Moseley Railway Trust's 2'0" gauge Apedale Valley Light Railway's Grand Opening Gala on Sunday 19th (also on Saturday 18th). So there won't be much modelling done in the next few days, but I hope to take a fair fe

Coombe Junction set in the future: Layout Idea Ponderings...

It seems the Looe Branch is a hot topic around here at the moment. I now know why, having had a lovely ride last month, getting tantalisingly close to Coombe Junction, only for it to dissapear into the mist leaving the train with no choice but to reverse and set off to Looe. Maybe one day I will reach this semi-mythical destination ...   Anyway, enough of my Coombe/Brigadoon analogy....   Inspired by the layouts among the blogs, and beyond, based on the line, I was wondering about a diffe

(Traction) motoring on

The first of the traction motor assemblies is approaching completion, just the fitting of the motor gear to go now (I'm not counting the axle assembly as part of the motor unit - I've still got to thread all 12 parts of those!)   Side view of the motor assembly:   The first one has been close to disaster a couple of times, due to me not really having a clue how best to put them together I've now worked out the best sequence for doing it, which should make the next 5 go together a lot qui

coombe junction - HALT...Who goes there?...

Update - I pose the question as not only was the station identified in 'The Guardian' last year as currently the least used station in the UK but even when it opened in 1901, The Board of Trade cited " The new station at Coombe does not conform to the standard requirements of the Board, which are hardly applicable to the peculiar conditions existing here. Few if any passengers use it...it is necessary because a reversing place is needed...neither booking office nor conveniences are provided...co

Dirty modern stuff!

I've been detailing and weathering a couple of Re6/6's locos, together with a couple of his 'Sharks' for Matford. Not quite my usual period, but it's been fun, and I also get to play with them at Scaleforum!

Further progress on the N gauge Parry People Mover (Class 139 railcar)

It has been a fair while since I posted progress on this particularly fiddly little project!   Wooden prototypes are getting closer to capturing the shape of the real thing, next step is to perfect casting versions in clear resin, to fit around the four wheel Kato Pocket Line chassis.   You might have seen this recently in Hornby magazine, who have kindly printed a short news story on the project. A nice touch was that the image in the corner of the news page was printed almost exactly to f

September Update...

Layout   All bar one of the points have power now. The last set is giving me some problems as the point motor is only firing in one direction.. grr   I had to re-lay a section of track as it was causing one of the twins to derail. Now just need to order a lot of ballast!!   Commissions   The next two are done for my client, just 8 more to go (plus others no doubt) They are Original Battle of Britain 34064 Fighter Command heavy weathered in pre-April 1962 conditon only slight deviation i

Clevedon - track laying 3

The yard area has now been ballasted, with a gradual blend of ash creeping into proceedings. The rails have been sawn through and the boards separated as I need space to get Wheal Elizabeth up and checked in advance of Scaleforum. I've got a few rail droppers to add (I missed some despite soldering on loads) and you can see the make up piece of shiny track linking the two ends of the loop. Now the boards are apart, I'll be able to take a board at a time up to my modelling room and work on them i

lines on a shelf from a wardrobe update

Well the layout has taken a back seat of late one due to money and the other being my illness cropping up again.   I've had some more surgery where they did some monitoring of my condition for a few days where I was wired upto a laptop again. Just waiting on a decision from my surgeon if he is going to do more to me before I start back with the layout.   I have however since my last trip to the hospital been back to work which means I'm back to being able to buy things so I wasted no time in

Buffers made and added to the 20

When I built my 25, I struggled to come up with a way of cutting plasticard into discs. It had me stumped for days ! and then I came up with a real simple solution... 4pence tooling   Step One   Super glue four 1 pence pieces to a strip of styrene.       Step Two   Using a blade score straight lines round the penny, then with a pair of pliers snap the surplus off. You need to hold the penny to the card.           Step Three   Dress the edge with a file using the penny as a

Midland Meanderings

The weekend began at an ungodly hour on Saturday morning - I was helping on the 2mm Scale Association stand at the International N Gauge Show, and it meant getting up early in time to set up the stand before the show opened. This is the first time I've been to this exhibition, and it was well worth the 2.5 hour journey from York. I took the shunting plank layout (which had been wired up the night before!) and had a class 24 running up and down 6 inches of track (I had to chose between the wirin

Hythe Parkway - Extension Progress

Hi,   Been a while since I updated this, so here we go!   First off all the points are now working and all the microswitchs are attached, everything is wired into chocolate boxes, but it's not all connected together, this'll be done when the board is put up next to the platform board.   Next up is that I have started work on the concrete hard standing around the track work, I've been using Andy Y's method for inset trackwork and so far it's working   I'll put some photos up when there's

Domestic bliss.................?

Forgot about this...... I recently got this part destination blind from a postwar Leeds tram, seeing as they finished in '59 it's at least 50 years old. I fancy using it as part of the fascia cloth on Grime Street, however Mrs Red Devil wants it to go with her collection of enamelled signs, some of which can be seen with it. Normally what Mrs R.D. wants Mrs R.D. gets.........   Gentlemen (and ladies) place your bets.............................................!

Tower Car 2, not running like a bag of spanners anymore...............

A bit of a fiddle with the pickups, a light oiling and as much self adhesive lead strip as I can stuff in it tower car 2 is running much more like   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K5270FyudQ   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSL2SIJxKIA&feature=channel   I now need to finish the inner tower and shorten the bows, the drawing shows a longer bow, but as the rear one is used it's too far back and it's fouling the overhead in places. Strangely it runs better weight first, so will blacken th

Woking 2010 exhibition

Just posted some images from the Woking exhibition; a small smattering of what was on offer.   Thomas Junction - what can one say?! Delightful, engaging, but most of all clever. Richard Pretious has certainly done much to get the very youngest of next gen. modellers interested in the hobby, not forgetting Thunderbird 3 and Kermit the Frog who ably assist him!   For me, Umbridge summed up what N gauge is all about. A work in progress it is an ambitious 4 track mainline, with harbour, ferry

2-8-2 Visits Summat Colliery on Test

OK, I admit it, I played with the 2-8-2 for a lot of the day at Trains4U and it behaved itself quite well. Stuggled over the "hump" that appeared at one baseboard joint and proved that 14 wheel pickup isn't necessarily enough   Lots of questions from customers about what/why etc it has been modelled. Anyway here's a few pics         So now it's on with the bodyshell detailing. I bought some brass tube to fabricate the counterbalance spring for the RHS weighshaft bracket and some
