Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Trains4U Open Day Report

What a day, Summat behaved itself really well - first time out since the Mansfield Show. Had a few odd track alignment problems at baseboard joins. Most sorted with a quick tweak with pliers   Loads of great questions from knowledgeable punters and a lot of customers went away inspired.   I think Gareth should start stocking hanging basket liner as I had a lot of questions about it's use on Summat   Summat Colliery set up and ready on the upper floor mezzanine ready for the the off

A Painty Sunday

With a few spare hours on Sunday (between walking dogs, lopping tree branches etc. You get the idea), I managed to progress a couple of my projects.   Out came the brushes and the Humbrol. Rails and timbers were painted on the coal drops, stonework was touched up and the coal piles were painted matt black.   When this had dried, the coal piles were glued in and real coal was added in various amounts to the cells of the drops. Finally weathering powders, black through dark brown, were brushed

Electricity and Fuel?

Hi   Having spent a few hours putting together the Knightwing security fence for my electricity substation on the depot, i stood back to admire and realised I had put it next to a fuelling point AAAAARGH!   Needless to say the planning department would not issue completion certificate until it was moved!   The trials of modelling:lol:

Rebooting Blog! Still working towards an N gauge GWR 'toplight' carriage or two!

It has been too long since I updated the blog, here goes!   A trip to TINGS at Leamington today got me inspired to finish off my 'Mark II' toplights. You may recall that my originals were based on the remains of some old Farish 'main line' carriages. The next set are being created using Dapol Collett carriages as a much better starting point, shortened, and decorated with a hybrid of Ultima sides for the windows, and home brewed printed 'toplights' and other embellishments.   The earlier att

Lining up ducks.

The lack of updates has not meant lack of progress, in fact far from it! The revised etches have arrived - on two sheets this time, 0.7 nickel silver for the larger structural parts, 0.5mm brass for the rest. Some of the parts were too tricky to fold in the initial design.     There's still something immensely satisfying about send off a computer file, handing over some dosh and getting a shiny sheet of metal parts in return!   Work has also been continuing on other aspects of the proje

TINGS comedown. HST project and some unitary thinking

After an early start and a long day yesterday, today has been a lot quieter - giving a chance to think through the theory of my 150/153 combo, and have a gander at how the 153 goes together. When I get round to actually working on this it looks like a fair amount of work, and that's without considering the FGW respray... Anyway, a couple of photos to illustrate the models. The Farish 150 is, IMO, one of the best N gauge items available at the moment, and to my eye, sadly, the 153 isn't qui

Class 20 Railfreight logo

The white sticky labels have been in the printer again this evening ! This time to make some Railfreight cab side logos. I have also applied numbers. I had some white vinyl letters that I used on the 25 so rather than getting black ones I used a permanent marker to colour them in, before peeling them of the backing sheet!       This side has also had the white window frame added but the black needs some tidying up at the edges still.

Tunnel portals for Highworth

With some 9 tunnel portals on Highworth I've started looking for prototype inspiration and working up to a bit of scratchbuilding.   The various ready-to-use offerings are ok and have worked so far, but there are a couple of "vacancies" for something better/a little bit different, see below.   The twin track portal that forms the entry/exit to Highworth station is the first one I want to tackle.   http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/gallery/image/22472-picture-138jpg/   This pa

2mm FS Workbench

As I described in my last post, I have been modelling in both 1:148 N gauge, and 1:152 2mm FS. The high quality of modern N gauge modern-image stock has meant I have decided to concentrate my 2mm FS efforts in the pre-grouping stock, and (for now) accept N gauge wheel\track standards for my modern stock (although ElDavo's handbuilt N track on Waton is quite tempting!).   Although I have a Fencehouses Model Foundry 2mm J72 kit "on the go", I haven't made much progress on it in the last year or

Modern British N Gauge Workbench

I thought it was about time to post something online about my actual modelling projects. As my previous posts might suggest, my interests are pretty eclectic, but are all in 2mm/N. Basically while I don't really have the space or time for a layout quite yet, I have been working on stock for three broad themes:   1) GER pre-grouping in 2FS (2mm Finescale), most likely set in the period around 1915-1925   2) East Anglian mainline circa 1990-2000 in standard N   3) Scandinavian, particularly

Rolling Stock Progress

The DU65 Draisine is pretty much completed. I have added some details such as the vehicle number. I also painted the sections of the Draisine that were more difficult: I will continue to try and make the Draisine look more realistic with detail to the underside but this will be done over time as I find the parts that I require to undertake that work. Over this build I kept thinking that it is a compromise, there was the height of the vehicle which I got as low as possiuble but had to se

Large logo, for the 20

This evening I have been playing with a logo, I already had a small version for the 25 which I enlarged to the right size. I then inverted the colours so the bit I wanted was white leaving the background grey. Finally I printed it on some white paper, self adhesive labels.     These were stuck on and given a coat of satin spray varnish to seal them.         John

Help needed with Broken Buffers extension.

Hello all, for this entry I'm going to have to ask you to use the photos from the entry which this entry derives its name, this is because my camera is out of battery and the charger has disappeared.   Anyway, the body of the Lima Shunter, which henceforth shall be know as an Ex BR class 94 shunter, is secured to the chassis via, what I call, Buffer Boxes, to which the body is held by small clips which fit under the BBs. I had planned to replace the molded plastic buffers with brass replacemen

Class 20 Paint job

The basic colours are now in place, but will need some rework, in particular the red which is still somewhat transparent.     Following the yellow, the next colour up was the Railmatch Grey for the sides, which like the yellow was applied from a rattle can in very thin coats "force" dried with a hair drier, then another coat applied until an even coverage was achieved. The grey went on last night.   This morning the sides were masked a the lighter grey roof was done (actually primer gr

The Dawlish Donkey visits Matford.

The Dawlish Donkey summer charter visits Matford. This was a public service that ran between Exeter and Newton Abbot during the summer months a few years ago. The lovely little 14XX belongs to CK. This will run on the layout as a shunt and release move to bring some added and unusual interest!

Bridging the gap

Today my Borve modules get their legs. And I placed the modules in my hallway. Then I assembled my other modules in my railway room. Now I could measure the distance between Borve and my layout for building the missing module.     Markus

Preparing for Scaleforum.

With S4um looming rapidly, there's still a bit to do. The latest structure is the loco fueling point, replacing the old adapted Knightwing kits which have passed their best. The new one re-uses the original roof and a couple of the salvagable small cabinets. It's made from a sheet of PCB with fine angle brass H-section soldered on.     Still to be 'planted' and 'vegitated'
