Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Maplins sound card in Garratt

After a couple of previous attempts I have tonight tried a different option for sound in the G scale garden. An £8 make it yourself kit from Maplins. HERE   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUU1TVkRH2Y   As the loco runs in an on/off condition there is no need to have control over the chuff speed, I just need to adjust it to be something like right for the motion speed.   John

Showtime !

Currently I have Potters lane stuck in the middle of our living room whilst I try and get it ready for its next outing in two weeks. The layout has been invited to the NRM Locomotion museum at Shildon for an event being organised by the Shildon MRC. This outing will be another milestone in the devlopment of this YMR module layout as it will be used for the first time with the two new fiddle yards that im also constructing for the YMR show in september. The fiddle yards take the form of three roa

Debunking, debunking, debunking a daft myth (of sorts) (SSR)

Perhaps a couple of words are required on this. I'm not discussing whether or not the SSR exists. What am trying to do here is clear up a handful of contradicting "facts"/ anecdotes surrounding it.   A quick Google for "SSR" reveals this site: http://www.willys-mb.co.uk/strategic-reserve.htm   which on the face of it, appears to prove conclusive evidence of the reserve. My comments on this site is basred on the photos on the site   The first photo: http://www.willys-mb.co.uk/images/strateg

i really should concentra...oooh shiny

i find it quite hard to keep up with myself, i'll post an idea or a plan on here, then completely neglect to update because im so engrossed in buidling whatever it is im building. so this time im going to try be a bit less distractable and actually keep a regular record of my latest frankenstein.   i started building a small layout, made a baseboard on the budget of £0.00... skips really are your best friend, you can find quite lengthy offcuts or boards that have served their purpose to the

Slightly less burning flesh......

One advantage of soldering the upper superstructure is the absence of very large bits of brass that act as heatsinks (and heatstores). The fuel tank and end panel have been added with a minor bit of fettling around the edges. Judith Edge kits are well engineered and for a competent etched kit builder should present no problem whatsoever. I quite like building Edge etched kits with about 10 complete so far and another 5 including this one on the "to-do/finish" shelf. The Bullant power unit has ha

We have been doing things, honest!

Whoops, I've forgotten to update this in a while! Well we have done a bit since last November when we were building pointwork and testing track ideas for the relay.   As these pictures show we now have some of the plain track laid (glued and ballasted in one go) and i've been wiring the dropper to it as we go. The ballast is a mix of two Greenscenes bags and i'd much prefer them now over Woodland Scenics due to the tonal variation in each type even before you look at weathering it.   The hol

Op 14t Open Wagon – Underframe

Some time has passed since the last update mainly due to no work actually being undertaken all thanks to a lingering cold. However getting back into the project and noticed something.     Whilst trying to identify the various markings on the underframe I noticed I had made a bit of a boo boo. I had made the assumption that the underframe sides were mirror images when in fact they are handed. This becomes apparent in the location of the various markings. Unlike British rolling stock which l

Asbestos fingers required

Work has progressed on the Steelman. A few photos are attached showing the underframe with axlebox guides and multi-layer bufferbeams - 5 laminations. The kit has pretty much been built to the instructions so far. Problem with soldering the big bits of brass is that you forget that they remain very hot for a couple of minutes after! The footsteps are particularly nice bits of etching.       I quite like building Edge kits as my my fotopic site shows

Bruckless update and Railex

Is it really two months since I updated the blog? In that time the ballasting to all the yard areas has been completed and ballasting to the main line started but stopped again when we ran out of ballast, now waiting for four weeks for more supplies! All the structures - bridges, retaining walls, platforms, etc. have been painted weathered and largely fixed. Don't want to fix the plate girder overbridge until the track below has been ballasted. The fueling points and oil depot are finished, ligh

Was this really a good idea?!

Having built a set of five Parkside two-ton Festiniog slate waggons, I set about working out how to join them together. I intend to run them in a semi fixed rake, so in a block that can be shunted as one, but can be altered lengthwise in the fiddle yard. Either end will have a standard Bemo-style coupling, the operating end will be a Paul Windle (when I can find them!) and the other end is simply the moulded one from the kit.   For the rest of the couplings, I have fitted the 'buffing/coupli

Motoring on

Progress on the 455 has also reached a bit of a milestone, in as much as the MS is now substantially complete and I've fixed the first of my own design 'etchy bits' to a model B)     It's still looking quite bare under there, but I'm expecting the underframe box masters from my co-conspirator in the next couple of weeks so a bit of resin casting after that should see the undergubbins of the MS attached.   The trailer vehicles are coming on, but I've yet to decide exactly what bogies

He ain't heavy....

A somewhat obtuse title, I suppose, but what the heck, I'm suffering from lack of imagination due to the heat   Work continues on the heavyweight conversion, with the bogie mods done and the headlights replaced. These are Replica items, drilled through with a 2mm drill and stuck to the shell with Plastic Weld once the original moulded lights were shaved off carefully.     It makes a massive difference to the appearance of the loco IMO, especially as the 'face' is one of the first thin

Steam and diesel on Whitsun, or - The very new and the rather old, Vol. 2

Afternoon all!   Weather today was (and still is - though I have a feeling there may yet be some thunderstorms at night) glorious and thus just about perfect for a little spotting trip. Moreover, I did not have to venture far for that, as Whitsun is when there is a small but nice railfest at Königstein, which is a town of some 15,800 inhabitants just a couple of kilometres from where I live. Königstein is a neat little town and a renowned climatic spa, and located in a wonderful landscape at

Frames taking Shape

Soldered the first three spacers onto the frames last night, although the back one might have to move as I need a mounting point for the rear pony ....     Guess what I've got to assemble next then? yep, the rear pony. Same applies to the motion bracket, I need to at least fold up the main etch so that I can determine where the fixing screw for that will be, then put a frame spacer in the right place.   This make it up as you go along design and build is not as easy as you think   Cyl

N Gauge Class 139 Railcar (Parry People Mover 'PPM60')

Right, back to work on some modelling, after a bit of a break!   Here is the latest project, again involving a little bit of CAD work to set the wheels in motion, the subject, the Class 139 Railcar,   see www.parrypeoplemovers.com   Which will be based on a readily available Kato N gauge chassis. The chassis is a good match for the real thing, the only difference being the slightly longer wheelbase, this however is a handy thing as it allows the motor to sit down low beneath the window lin

Blackwell Road 2

Short update.   Layout now has a permanent home in my bedroom, spend the last couple of weeks getting some shelving put up to allow me to store the layout, without stealing floor space. Also been filling and sanding the board tops ready for applying the Templot plan, which I'm happy to say has concluded today.\     Please excuse the photo, the light was failing and my room is a lot tidier than it looks from this angle, but I really do need to sort out the work bench and the stock shelf. 'Is that some made up diesel?'

What a quote - but yes a question I was asked at the weekend by an inquisitive brother! I spent this weekend with my two brothers helping out Mum with decorating. It was good fun but hard work - I did take over the Sentinel, hoping to grab an hour on the project after a hard day or between coats of paint - as well as show her off to my Dad. In the end I only grabbed 45 mins on Saturday night after painting near enough non stop from 9am to 5pm! I've fitted the roof ventilators, air filter and a

Day one

First of all - a quick intro. A few of you will have seen previous projects of mine on "Blackmill" and also via the DEMU forum. This blog will hopefully parallel the DEMU stuff.   It will be an eclectic mix of locos, rolling stock, DCC projects and odd other bits.   I'va already published a few photos of a recent TEA wagon project in the gallery section here   First up is a Judith Edge kit for a Thomas Hill Steelman 0-6-0DH. Pics to follow in the next day or two.   Mick

The very new and the rather old

...could be said to be the tagline for the following pair of photos I snapped this afternoon ...         Last time I snapped one of these it had been cold and snowy, and as I currently do not have any knowledge about when the new class 440 EMUs will finally enter service around Würzburg - thereby eliminating the need for DB Regio to continue the lease on the MRCE 185s - I thought a picture of one of these in bright sunlight would be nice. This here is 185 557 with RE 4612 from Würzburg

some rolling stock for the works......

Thought I had better improve on the stock so heres some details of the growing stocklist ( allthough the REAL thing had only ONE loco and a solitary hudson skip) the yellow loco below is scratchbuild on a "Underground Ernie" chassis and is to no particular design, i just made it up as i went along!!!     The skips I eventually decided on Slater's 1/32 offerings and once re-wheeld with larger wheels they look the part in 1/24, of course much weathering and "mud" needed here!!!!   Then I go
