Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

More drawings

A little more design work on buildings for the backsceen, with a continuation of work on the retail park.   This is the style of structure I am going for Although it is based upon the rear of the building (which if i remember correctly is completely block built construction rather than clad in metal), my design is slightly different to the prototype in the radius of the roof (I started building it years back pre google earth, so the dimensions were all estimated from this photo. I have now

Scrayingham stock progress

Yesterday I had a session building Paul Windle couplings, so my box van is now operational (the heights do need a bit of tweaking though).     I've also made a bit of progress on my various bits of Festiniog stock; Worsley Works push-pull driving trailer Carriage 111 has had some more work done on it's interior, also a Worsley product, Carriage 104 is now all in one piece barring the roof (which is cooling after being annealed as I type), and Parkside open carriage 37 is awaiting passengers

TOU Installation

Well,   Slow progress is happening in my few days off before my second block of night shifts, the first turnout operating unit (TOU) has been installed. Luckily there was enough play in the whole assemble to stop any excess force being applied to the switch blades. The pictures are pretty much self explanatory, when compared with the previous post.         Also, I've knocked together a 12T van for a bit of a change. I'm quite pleased with it

Garrett and coaches in the snow

Encouraged by the success of the plough on Friday I decided to run the Garratt on Saturday. The weather was COLD it was SNOWING and the tracks were WET and SLIPPY. Not to be put off I got the Garrett out along with the 3 freshly glazed coaches. Fortunatley there are no passangers inside yet, as they may complain about the lack of doors.   All went well till the battery started to run down, with the lack of power, traction became a problem on the slippery gradients.   Here we see her struggl

Setting the scene with a can of beans ?

Family Christmas preperations are in full swing so all things 'Brooke Stone' related have gone on the back burner for a while.   I did managed however a job last night and a few pics this morning before packing everything away in the train room until my long awaited 4 day break between Christmas & the New Year.   The 'big end' building has been painted, weathered & sealed with just the lighting, signage and roof to sort out.   With a can of beans standing in for the 5th un built st

Why do we do it to ourselves?!

Wolds-End is now virtually complete. Had a bit of a running session, it does take a long time to work things out to move, so great operating potential. Picked up my Class 24 with sound from Digitrains yesterday, although not allowed to run it as it's my christmas present. Looking around the shop I saw that you can actually get the Class 24 in N-gauge, which got me thinking, and on my return home, checked to see what was available. Having scanned the usual online retailers, thought what about

Old locos

Now that we've been hit by a deluge of all new super accurate and fine N gauge models I've recently been going though some of my older stock; the stuff that doesn't stand up to comparison and has embarrassing 'improvements'. I've already managed to sell my old Poole Farish class 47s and get rid of some particularly ancient 37s (I've still got another in messy triple grey livery) but it???s converted, not very well, to represent an actual loco seen at Woking, and runs well on a new Chinese chassi

Crossing work begins

After reading several times through the GWSG publication on GWR switch and crossing practise I felt ready to begin creating timbering diagrams for construction. I used the A3 photocopy to scan into CAD and then stretch and scale to size then drew over the top. This took much longer than I thought, and it would probably be quicker to recommend that anyone else thinking of doing things this way stopped after the initial splines and then added all other detail afterwards.   There were two main ar

455 Progress

I've made a bit more progress with the 455, with all four bodyshells assembled. The bodyshells go together quite well, but I have had to do a fair bit of fettling to get the ends to line up properly with the roof and the sides to line up properly with the ends. No major surgery was required, just a little judicious filing here and there, particularly the vertical section of the rebate in the sides, where it meets the end of the roof.   All 4 cars with filler applied around the ends, awaiti

Projecting Ahead

Hi All,   It has been slow going with the modelling of late, however I have managed to make quite a bit of good progress (for me) over the last week or so. This has been helped by being allowed a modest spending spree by those in pinnies who hold the purse strings.   Delivered recently was a pair of Bachmann class 150's in order to make the GMPTE triple a reality, and also a class 153, which will be modified with the Bachmann power-train as per Scheihallion.   The march of progress has al

another new loco (number 3)

For Christmas 08 my family very kindly bought me a Bachmann inside frame 4-4-0 locomotive. This loco runs well and is well detailed, but I wasn't quite sold on it initially. It looked too low when viewed from the front. It wasn't long before I weathered it and this seemed to make it change shape, and it is now one of my favourite locos. As it comes it has lots of additional detail parts to give some variation, and I used some of these. The changes included changing the front bogie to one wi

Bachmann class 47

Goodevening - a quick post tonight. Im not the greatest class 47 fan in the world - so my preference at the moment is the Vitrains 47 over the latest Bachmann one - as the Vitrains model is a bit easier to work on , more P4 friendly , and looks better (IMO). I have ended up buying the Bachmann Parcels livery 47474 though - as its the exact loco that i wanted for my collection i it woudl have been silly to respray a vitrains one when i could just get a Bachmann one off the shelf, correct

Let it snow, let it snow

After last nights dilema over what to spend a free hour on, some fresh falling of snow made my mind up !! I had glazed the 3 coaches yesterday and more importantley given them a coat of satin varnish, that would make them stand up to some moisture in the form of snow.   I lasted about 30mins outside (it was -4C) some trains ran but I found that the fresh wet snow falling on the track reduced traction to the point it was hard work getting anything up the grade, throw in batteries that were not

Middlemill - Finished?

Some say that a layout is never finished. But Middlemill appears to be! I just cant think of anything more to add now. So I guess I should show some more pictures instead:                   I have also made a video of it in action:       Enjoy!

Southeast Steam Railway - Signals & Boxes

Hi,   With having a few spare moments on Monday night, I decided to build the Junction signal to go at the end of Platform 2. I managed to finish it within half-an-hour:     It does work, but not very well!   Plus the Signal box is glazed and ready for an interior. I did see on a Wigan but as it was ??13 for a couple of whitemetal parts. I decided to wait:     Comments welcome!   Simon

Too many choices ? ! ?

Im sure I will get a couple of hours modelling time tomorrow. Now if I had this opportunity a week ago, the choice would be simple, some work on the Orange Growers Module, after all its at an exhibition on January the 24th !! But then I went and started working on the three 45mm coaches and now Im getting hooked on them. Add in potential photo opportunites in the snowy garden and there is just too many fun things to do and not enough time !!! The temperature is no longer a factor either, I s

P4ing the prototype Deltic (part 2)

Finally finished fitting new wheels to my Bachmann prototype deltic, As mentioned in my previous posting I have used Exactoscale wheels, giving the combination of looks (given that in essence this is always going to be a display model rather than a layout performer) and gives me a loco which will only run when the track is perfect (in other words its just what the doctor ordered for track testing, as if this will go through it, anything will!)   All that remains to be done is a needs to repl

Progress so far...

The following photos represent approx. 3 months of progress. As I said, I don't have much modelling time...! The board is a MDF stair tread which just happened to be lying around. I have another one which could be utilized for a fiddle yard at some stage.   This pic shows the board with the final Templot design taped down. It's my first complete design in Templot and I'll admit is far from perfect, but it's good enough.   Timbers and sleepers laid. The rest of the plain track will be

Gloucester Road - A happy three year old and some weathering

The Missus had a Ladies Christmas party last night so I disapeared to the train room for several hours last night. My rake of four Farish HHAs need to be weathered so out came the powders and some transfers of grafiti. Then this morning my yougest said "Dad lets play trains", who can pass that up!!!!   2 pics of the HHA     the rake was then seen passing the unfinished portion   passing out of Upper Brimsley   then several pics in Gloucester Road       And finally t
